October Challenge
Posted 03 Oct 07
Good evening, ladies and gents. I'm here to announce the October challenge while our beloved head admin, Kaiwynn, works on...I think it's her twilight_swap fic, actually, but in any case, I'm here.
This months theme is minor characters. Write us a fic about any of the minor characters throughout the series. No specifics, just make sure it's a minimum of 500 words, as per usual, and have it into either Kaiwynn or me by Halloween.
Got that? Due: October 31/ Halloween. Which ever helps you remember.
Hope that floats your boat. If not, look out for the next challenge sometime next month!
ETA: Okay, here's clarifications for who constitutes a minor character, for this challenge.
1) Not Bella.
2) Not Jacob.
3) Not any of the Cullens.
4) Not an original character.
Does that help? Everybody else is available to write about.
ETA2: Email all submissions to kaiwynn@twilightarchives.com.

Let's see if I can come up with anything decent... I don't think I'm going to do very well on this one. Wait! Can I use a story I already have posted?

I'm new here and this is the first challenge since I joined. Could someone please tell me where we send our stories. Do we just send them in like we normally do and fill in the challenge box? I know it's a stupid question, but I honestly don't know. Responde Si Vous Plais!
By Eternitys_charm
Posted 05 Oct 07
to send your stories to the admin all you have to do is either send it to them by e-mail...or by the "contact us" icon ontop....=]...right??? LOL!!!!!!

in other words it is sumperson that shows up in the story but the author doesn't talk much bout them or the plot doesn't center round them......would it b okay if we just mention Jake or Bella???
By Eternitys_charm
Posted 06 Oct 07
I think it will be ok to mention jake or bella, just as long as the story revolves around the minor character most....
By Kaiwynn
Posted 06 Oct 07
Yes, I suppose that's fine -- although I'd prefer you didn't. Just don't make them prominent in the story.
By mimie
Posted 06 Oct 07
this has nothing to do with the challenge but, if i wanted to write a story (one-shot) that has bad grammer and makes no SENSE at all, can i do it? I'm just thinking it's for a laugh...???
By awsomealice94
Posted 07 Oct 07
one quick question- do we just send you the story, or chapter notes and stuff that go along with it???
By Blonde Bella
Posted 08 Oct 07
How is a story about one of the minor characters thinking about Bella?
By MissRandumb
Posted 14 Oct 07
Do you have to do the challenge? Or are you allowed to submit stories to the site that don't have to do with the challenge? I'm new so I'm slightly confused. Heh.
By Blonde Bella
Posted 14 Oct 07
You don't have to participate in the challenge; it's just an optional, fun thing for the writers. You can post non-challenge related stories on the site.

Posted 15 Oct 07
I thought they said no Cullens? Wouldn't Esme, Carlisle and such be considered Cullens? Anyways,I kinda think this is gonna fun.... I haven't even finished reading Twilight yet! *Bad me, I know* But I have some great ideas!!!

can we have our editors/beta's look @ our story for the challenge?
By radiance
Posted 24 Oct 07
I don't think it would be fair if people can have their stories betaed for the challenge. The challenge is supposed to be a reflection on your skill and what you can write. I think the winner of the challenge should be based on the story the the person wrote on his/her own, not the after work of what the beta did to it. This is just my opinion.
By addictedtotwilight
Posted 24 Oct 07
Why not? The beta is just supposed to help you out... I know mine usually just helps me with stupid typos I make, or grammar that I screw up. But I think that your story should be judged on creativity and plot, and possibly canon, not on a person's inability to type correctly.
By radiance
Posted 24 Oct 07
Well...that's not what I meant. Some betas rewrite sentences and tell you to add stuff and all that. They don't just correct grammar that spelling errors. Sure, yours might just fix typos and grammar mistakes, but some others don't. They make it so it's not only your writing. I'm not saying that you should be judged on your ability to type correctly. I'm saying you should be judged on your work alone. Not what you can someone else can do. There also many spell and grammar checking websites online.

I kind of have to agree with radiance on this one... I don't use a beta, and I don't have anything against them. I don't care if you post a story that has been betaed or not. But this is a challenge. You should be judged on your ability to write. Not your's and someone else's. And a story isn't only judged on creativity and plot. Writing quality has a lot to do with it to. So isn't it kind of unfair if you get help on that and some other people don't?

uh oh, i didn't want to start a whole argument with my question...i'll figure it out anyways i do see points to both sides though.....
By xoxoROSEPETALSxoxo
Posted 24 Oct 07
i guess the only one who can really answer the question are the site-admins........lol
By Marauder by Midnight
Posted 24 Oct 07
Well, I personally don't see anything wrong with someone asking for guidance when writing. Betas are supposed to help you with your story, it's true, but they're not supposed help you rewrite the entire thing. That's not very responsible of the beta or the author. It never hurts to have a second opinion. If you think it's unfair for people to use a resource available to them, don't forget it's available to you too. Use a beta yourself then. Or not. Totally up to you. But it's unfair to take away a second opinion before submitting a challenge from someone else.

I'm just kind of in an argumental mood right now! And many people figure out pretty quickly that once you get me started on something, you pretty much can't stop me! It's a bad habit, but my dad says I'll make a great lawyer. I didn't really want to start an argument either, but, I just had three very long and very big tests that would make or break my grade in school today. I'm freaking CRAZY right now! Sorry if there was a misunderstanding with some of my recent posts. I'm fine with betas. In fact some of my stories have been betaed and they have been improved considerably. In my opinion, a grammar and spelling check is fine for a challenge! It's just when the story it's self gets a little rewritten by someone to sound better for a challenge that I get a little touchy on the subject.

I don't think radiance is saying that someone shouldn't have a second opinion. I think she's just saying that the story shouldn't be a little rewritten or tweaked by someone else. She's not saying that you can't have a second opinion and you have to be entirely in the dark. Having a beta is fine, but the story should remain untouched for a challenge. Spelling and grammar and some side notes are fine. But if the writing is changed, then I think it's kind of unfair.

okay, i agree with Marauder by Midnight, and only because she is right. wouldn't a beta be the same thing as asking one of your best friends to look over your story for you? i honestly don't see anything wrong about it...i think its fine for a beta (or a friend(s) to look over it, or to read it to get a second opinion, she is right-you have the option of someone looking over or reading your challege story too

Hey, I was wondering if I could have the honour of helping to make the banners? That is, if no one else is already supposed to be doing it. :)

To change the writing of a story completely so that it is not even the author's work anymore is rude, irresponsible, and not respectful. Hopefully there aren't cases like that. But I think changing a few sentences around, especially to help an author who has trouble with conciseness, flow, and sentence structure, is fine and very much appreciated.

As a person who wants to be an editor for a living, I have to disagree with the people who are against betas for challenges. Just because most great writers have had an editor... I mean, Stephenie Meyer has one, so shouldn't people who are using her characters be allowed to do the same? Isn't the point of a challenge (or any submission, really) to submit the best story you can? It doesn't really matter who helped you out with it... just what the final outcome is. I know that I usually have my mom look over essays for school in case I make some mistakes... because everyone does (not just grammatical or spelling.) Having a beta is a resource that anyone can have available.... so shouldn't you utilize that resource? I know I don't want to read a crappy story. :P
I don't know, just a N00b's opinion. ;D

Uh... I still regard my writing as mine, even when I have my beta read it. So, I don't think that it's a bad thing, but I don't want to argue either. It's nowhere in the rules that we can't use a beta, so let's leave it at that.

Original characters are ones that Stephanie Meyer didn't come up with. If you make up a character, thats an oringinal one.
By Quesse Silme
Posted 29 Oct 07
I think Jessica or Mike would be fine to write about. As long as it doesn't include the characters from the above list (i.e. Bella, Jake, and the Cullens).

This is my first time doing the challenge...so what usually happens after the challenge is over? Is there some sort of 'winner' or something?
By awsomealice94
Posted 02 Nov 07
Kaiwynn usually will announce the 3 winners after she has a chance to go through them (all the stories) all. we all have busy lifes and this challenge probably isn't her number one thing to do on her list. but she will announce the 3 winners (1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place) sometime after the challenge is over :)=

Yeah, it always takes her forever to tell us who wins. Last time, we didn't know for almost a month afterward. I have my fingers crossed it will be sooner though. But, I was thinking the same thing as PacificNorthWet... obviously, no one can steal our ideas now, so can we post our entries.
