Some Submission Problems..

Posted 04 Jun 08

Okay, guys. I'm pausing in the middle of reviewing submissions because I've had to reject far too many.

One of the submission rules listed for stories on this page states:

Use the preview button. Stories that do not have proper line breaks or paragraphs will be rejected.

Now, just a few pointers if you're not sure WHERE to put line breaks or to start a new paragraph.

1. If you are talking about two seperate things, it's usually best to seperate that into two seperate paragraphs. Otherwise, it just won't flow. This rule doesn't always apply, but in most cases it does.

2. If you have a conversation going on, each time a new character begins speaking, you start a new paragraph. This has been the one rule of grammar that people seem to not be familiar with.

For example:

"Oh no!" Alice shouted. "What's wrong, Alice?" Edward asked, his eyes narrowed. She stared blankly at him for a moment before responding, "Nothing."

That is the WRONG way to format the conversation. It should appear like this:

"Oh no!" Alice shouted.

"What's wrong, Alice?" Edward asked, his eyes narrowed.

She stared blankly at him for a moment before responding, "Nothing."

And lastly...

Everyone please, please, please make sure you hit the preview button before you submit your story!

Sometimes, when you attempt to copy and paste from word into the Story Text field, the spacing and paragraphs can become distorted. Check over it after you paste it, and hit the preview button and check over it again.

Reading and re-reading while reviewing the rules is the best way to assure your submission gets accepted every time.

Thanks for your patience, and keep on submitting!

Well, speaking from experience, if you wrote the story in word and then copy and paste it into the submission box the line breaks sometimes get messed up. Not trying to start a fight, but if there are 5 space indentions in the middle of a blob...that's probably what happened.

I know :) And that's why I said this:

Thank you, though. :)
I wasn't exactly referring to that, anyway. Though that's what I've seen happen too, a few times.

Oh the glory of hitting the preview button...

Yeah, line breaks are a pain in the keister. I copy my stuff in from word, and I always have to go through my entire chapter and put spaces between paragraphs. It adds like, ten minutes to the posting process, but, since no one has to validate mine, I have to make sure it all complies with the whole line breaks thing.

An easy tip is to copy and paste from Word into something like Notepad. THEN copy and paste that into the Story Text field. Word gives a lot of formatting issues, which Notepad strips. Kai

I agree, also. ANother one of my peeves other than line breaks is commas, for example: "Edward is right" Alice said. It should be: "Edward is right," Alice said. Please review all grammar!

Before my line break always got distorted when ever I copied and pasted from word. But now, I use notepad. You just past fromn word on to notepad. Then u copy your text from notepad, cop and past onto the twilight archives and u submit. Everything is perfect and it doesnt get distorted! If u are confusd, ask the moderaters about notepad. I did.

Also, if you have a Mac you can use an application that comes with it called TextEdit. It doesn't mess up the format at all when you copy and paste. I love it! ^^ Just a tip for you Mac users! :D And if you're typing and you spell a word wrong, you can right click and you can scroll up and choose the word you meant to type. It immediately corrects it! I recommend TextEdit. :)
