6. Jealousy, Forgiveness, and Explanations

All morning, I paced up and down my room. Finally, I couldn’t stand it anymore. I left the house, going so fast that I didn’t even bother to stop and close the front door. When I was two miles from Bella’s house, I smelled it.
Werewolf. They were really close. I slowed down a bit and finally, I got to the edge of the woods in front of Bella’s house. There in her driveway was a Rabbit. Two kids from La Push were sitting inside.
Why the hell is Jacob taking so long? What is he doing? I realized that this is where the smell was coming from. They were werewolves, and apparently so was Jacob Black. I zipped past them so fast they never saw me. I climbed up the house and through Bella’s window.
I left her room and walked down the stairs. I heard Jacob utter Bella’s name. I walked into the kitchen and was upset and angry at what I saw. Jacob Black was holding Bella’s face, and was leaning in to kiss her. Bella’s face was the picture of indecision. My face was the picture of anger. That filthy dog was making a move on my girlfriend! Then, Bella saw me out of the corner of her eye.
“Edward?” she questioned. Jacob went stiff. He dropped his hands from her face and turned to glare at me.
“Filthy bloodsucker!” Jacob lunged at me, but I moved out of the way just in time and dodged him.
“If I were you, Jacob, I would leave. It wouldn’t take much for me to snap your neck,” I told him. My rage was building. The fact that he would let his anger go so far around Bella!!
“Hell no, I was here first!” He roared at me. He started shaking.
“Jacob, I’m sure you wouldn’t want to do that in front of Bella,” I warned. I was trying to stay calm so that he would not get even more enraged. A picture flashed through his mind. Him and Bella were standing in a field. One of the La Push boys got angry and changed right there and attacked Jacob. Jacob changed too and they started to fight. Right in front of Bella!
“I can control it,” he countered.
“Jacob, you’re too mad to control yourself, you’d better go before you end up hurting Bella.” I warned. Then, another image flashed through my head. This time it was of a woman. One whole side of her face was mangled. She had long scars that pulled down her eye and mouth. She had been scratched by a werewolf.
“That’s exactly what would happen if you changed in front of Bella,” I was trying hard to control the anger that was building inside of me.
“I will not leave her here alone with you!” He was going to the extreme. If I didn’t act quickly, he would change into a werewolf right then and there.
“Jacob, we can do this some other time! Right now is not the best time. Just go before you do something that you will regret!” I screamed at him.
“I’m only leaving for Bella’s sake. I will be back for you, you filthy bloodsucker!” Then, he turned and ran out the door. I watched out the kitchen window. Just as he hit the forest, he transformed and was gone. The two boys, looking perplexed and confused, started the Rabbit and followed after Jacob.
I turned slowly to look at Bella. She was gripping the kitchen counter and her eyes were wide with fear and disbelief. Her legs were a bit shaky and she seemed to be in shock.
“Bella, honey it’s okay,” I tried to soothe her. All of a sudden, she ran at me and grabbed me around the waist, put her face into my chest, and started sobbing. I put my arms around her, and put my face in her hair. I didn’t care that she smelled like dog, it didn’t matter. We stood there for five minutes, her sobbing, and me taking in her beautiful scent. Finally, she looked up at me. She reached up with one of her hands and touched my cheek. I smiled under her touch.
“It’s really you isn’t it?” She said, still in shock.
“Yes, and I have to apologize Bella. I’m sorry for what I did. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I thought that leaving would be the right thing to do. Apparently I was wrong. I didn’t want this to happen. And, I’m sorry that you had to see that. I just didn’t want him to overreact in front of you. Could you ever forgive me?” I pleaded.
“Edward Anthony Masen Cullen,” When she used my full name she sounded like a mother that was about to reprimand a child. It took me off guard. “How could you ask such a silly question? Of course I can forgive you. That’s if you can forgive me.”
“Forgive you for what?” I was taken off guard that she would ask me to forgive her. What had she done that required forgiveness?
“Didn’t you just see that? He was going to kiss me, and I wasn’t trying to stop him,” she said. Her eyes were pleading.
“Bella, I wasn’t here. Do you think I expected you to wait around for me forever? I have to admit that when I saw you, I was very angry, but not at you.” I was mad at Jacob Black.
“Are you telling me that you were jealous?” She seemed very amused at this.
“Of course, I don’t want to have to share you with anyone,” I told her, tightening my grip around her waist, a smile playing on my lips. Then, as a thought popped into my head, my face fell. “Bella, can I ask you something?”
“Of course you can,” she told me.
“Why did you jump off that cliff?” I asked, concern filling my voice.
“Oh, that,” she said, turning her eyes away from me.
“Yes, that,” I said. I cupped on of my hands under her chin and turned her face back towards me. “Were you trying to kill yourself?”
“No! Of course not, why would you think that?” She said, not believing that I would even suggest that.
“Well, that’s what it sounded like when Jasper told me,” I said, worry coloring my tone.
“Jasper told you? How did he find out?” She asked.
“Alice told him of course,” I stated the obvious.
“Wait, so is everybody back?” She asked.
“Yes, they are all at the house,” I told her. As I said this, her face lit up and she started to smile. “But, that’s not what we were talking about. Why did you jump?”
“Well, I saw some kids from La Push doing it and it looked like fun. Jacob left me on the beach alone and I decided to try it,” she told me. I was extremely shocked. Bella did not strike me as the kind of person who would partake in cliff diving.
“You were doing it for fun?” I asked in disbelief. “And Jacob left you alone on the beach?”
“He had to go talk to the rest of the pack. He didn’t think that I was going to do anything bad,” she said, obviously trying to defend Jacob.
“Apparently, he doesn’t know you all that well,” I countered her.
“He saved me,” she said, defiant.
“How?” I questioned her.
“I would have drowned if he hadn’t swum out and gotten me,” she told me.
“And I am very grateful to him for that,” I told her. He had saved her from death when I couldn’t be there for her. I was happy that she had someone to look after her, whether or not he was a werewolf.
“Bella, how long has Jacob been a werewolf?” I was extremely curious to know how much danger Jacob truly was.
“Um, not that long,” she said, hesitant. Apparently, Alice had told her how dangerous a new werewolf could be. Bella was truly a danger magnet. Just when all the vampires leave, she finds werewolves to play with. I couldn’t leave her alone for a second!
That was brutal. Sue looked so sad. I hope that she’ll be okay. It was Charlie. He was going to be home soon.
“Bella, your dad’s going to be home soon, and I’m sure that he wouldn’t want to come home to me being here. It sounds like he had a hard day,” I told her, upset that I would have to leave.
“Please, don’t go!” Her eyes were full of sadness and worry. Worry for what? That I wouldn’t come back?
I bent down to whisper in her ear, “I promise, I will be back later,” I told her to reassure her. Then I added, “I love you Bella Swan.” I heard her heartbeat get faster.
“I love you Edward Cullen,” she told me. I thrilled at the sound of those words coming off her lips, they sounded so sweet.
I kissed her neck, and repeated my promise, “I will be back later.” Then, I kissed her neck one more time and hesitantly let go of her. I ran up the stairs and out her window.
As I ran home, I felt happier. She still loved me. I couldn’t believe that after all that time she still loved me. I would try to explain myself to her later. I wouldn’t feel better until she knew why I had left and thoroughly apologized to her. As I zoomed through the forest, all I thought about was her apparent joy that I had returned. All of my doubts and worry seemed worthless now.
When I got home, I snuck up to my room, but of course that didn’t work. Emmett and Jasper were waiting in there to ambush me.
Where is he? I can smell him, he has to be close.
I can sense his emotions. He seems pretty happy. Where could he be?
Then, I heard them get up and walk towards the door. I leaned against the railing nonchalantly and waited for them to leave the room. As the door opened, they saw me and came at me. I side-stepped them just in time, and they were both tumbling down the stairs. They landed at the bottom in a heap. I broke out in hysterical laughter at the sight. Both of them got up and came back upstairs for me. Emmett ran at me and tried to grab me, but I got him squarely on the chin first. When I was distracted with Emmett, Jasper came up behind me and locked my arms behind my back and tackled me to the ground.
“BOYS!” Esme’s disapproving voice came from the living room.
“Sorry, mom,” we said, in unison. Jasper let go of my arms and Emmett got up and punched me in the shoulder.
“Good match,” Emmett commented. Re-match later?
“Not tonight, I have a promise to keep,” I told him.
Oooo, Eddie’s got a date! Emmett teased me.
“How many times do I have to ask you not to call me Eddie?” I absolutely loathed that nickname.
“Jasper, where’s Alice?” I asked.
“She’s in our room. She got your message,” he told me. I felt a wave of calm wash over me.
“Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt her,” I promised. I walked down to Alice’s room and knocked on the door.
Come in Edward. Alice told me. I walked in the room and she was lying on her bed, covering her eyes.
“Alice, are you okay?” I asked, worried by her behavior. All of a sudden she jumped up, ran to me, and grabbed me in a hug.
I am so glad that you went to see her. She was bad, I mean really bad. I had to leave when the dog came over, she sneered as she said the word, I didn’t want anything bad to happen. Though I see you got into a little bit of a fight with him.
“Yes, that mangy mutt had his hands all over Bella,” I told her. “He wasn’t very happy to see me. And I can tell you that I will probably not get a warm welcoming from Charlie, either.”
I doubt if you will. He seemed to be really upset by what you did to Bella. He didn’t seem to think that you were hurt too.
“He has every right to be upset with me. I did something completely and utterly stupid.”
Now don’t go beating yourself up anymore. You have done enough damage to yourself already. Alice scolded me.
“Alice, I have to ask you something. What did she tell you?”
She said that she was so broken when you left that she felt like it ripped a hole in her chest. She was practically catatonic. Charlie tried to get Renee here to take her to Florida, but Bella woke up in the middle of the night when they were packing her things and threw a fit.
Exactly what I had heard her tell Alice, she was broken. Well, I was back and I was going to fix her.
“She is a complete danger magnet. Hanging out with werewolves, especially young werewolves. What was she thinking?”
Well he is her friend, even if he is a complete idiot. But Edward, there is something very important that I need to tell you.
“What is it?” I asked concerned.
Victoria is back. The pack has been tracking her on their land. Apparently, she turned the other direction when she smelled that we were back.
“So you are telling me that I left Bella to save her and the whole time Victoria has been here?” I was in disbelief. I had tracked her all the way down to Chile and she had really come here. I was the worst tracker in the world. “I left her vulnerable. Victoria could have gotten her at anytime?” I was completely stupid. How could I leave her alone like that?
That’s why Jacob came over today, to tell Bella that he couldn’t patrol this side of the land since we were back.
“I had better go then,” I said. I wasn’t about to leave Bella unprotected when Victoria was around. “Someone should be outside her house at all times. So when I come home to change tonight, can you cover the house?” I asked her.
Of course, you know that I will watch over Bella. And you can bet on Emmett and Jasper too.
“Thanks Alice,” I told her. I was relieved that I could count on my family to back me up. It felt good to know that they cared for Bella as much as I did.
