Bella and I had spent all of the morning in the meadow; she looked so lovely.

It’s been a year since I left her, and I can tell that she’s beginning to trust me more. We’ve been attending the local college here in Forks, since Bella procrastinated about applying elsewhere. A few other people from our class of ’06 are here, too. Mike, Alice (she wanted to stay with Bella and me), and some of the people from our Biology class. Angela applied to Stanford and was accepted. Jessica moved to San Francisco to be with her older brother; he is supposed to help her get into one of the colleges there that he goes to. Eric and Tyler, well they gave up on their persistent quest for Bella due to my tenacity in keeping her mine, and they are now room mates at a college in Maine somewhere. That’s about it for our, or rather Bella’s, old group.

Jacob has stayed in La Push, Bella and he have kept in touch via the phone, but I can tell that their friendship probably won’t last the year. Charlie has begun to accept me as a regular piece in Bella’s chess game, but I don’t think he trusts me entirely yet. According to his mind, he thinks I’m about to take off again, but this time take Bella with me. Every time he sees me whispering in her ear, he just about has a stroke; it’s almost funny sometimes, but I try to limit my intimacy with Bella to times when he is not around. Bella likes that idea. Ha, she worries so much about little things like that.

We’re meeting tonight at the high school gymnasium for a banquet in honor of Carlisle’s achievements at the hospital. Bella’s been upstairs for two hours already; Alice and Rosalie are getting her ready for the gala. Alice asked me not to look at her mind, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to do. Oh, they’re almost finished; Rose just told Bella to look in the mirror. Here they come….

“You look so beautiful,” I say as I walk over to pull her into my arms. She smiles and blushes, reminding me of her humanity. “I’m very partial to that color of your skin.” She laughs again, making my empty chest swell with joy. “You know, I’m beginning to think that you’re dazzling me now.” She laughs again.

“You know, too, then that you dazzle me more frequently when you’re wearing that tux,” she says slyly. I kiss her on the lips; I cannot believe this beautiful creature is mine.

“We need to hurry if we’re going to be on time,” Rosalie says, “Emmet told me not to be late.”

“Don’t worry, Rose, we’ll be there. Won’t we, Alice?” I ask, even though I already know the answer.

“Yes, we will. But not if we keep standing here talking about it! I’ll go get the car.”

We’re taking my special occasion’s car: the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish. I remember taking Bella to the prom two years ago in it. I hear Alice pull it around to the front, and I follow Rosalie out the door.

“Bella, are you coming?” I ask.

“Um…I’m a little nervous about this…”

Perplexed, I ask, “Why?”

“I’ve never been comfortable wearing these three inch stilettos. You may have to carry me out. If you remember, I twisted my ankle last time.”

I know she’s not being straight with me. “Bella, please, what’s really bothering you?”

She sighs, “Mike’s going to be there. He told me on Thursday that he’d like to sit with us. And he’s not taking a date.”

Now it’s my turn to sigh. There has been no progress with Mike; he is still trying to get Bella to start dating him. “Bella, I promise I won’t let Mike steal you away from me. Now can we go please? Alice is going to need to drive extra fast if we wait any longer, love.” That gets her moving; she still hates it when we drive above her truck’s sixty miles per hour limit. She walks over to me, and I escort her to the Vanquish. Alice and Rose are sitting in the front, so I open the door to the back seats for her, and then I get in on the other side. “Ok, Alice. Let’s go.”

We arrive promptly, which pleases Rosalie. She goes to sit with Emmet, Carlisle, and Esme. Bella and I sit with Alice and Jasper. There are no extra seats at our table, which seems to make Bella happier. I see her smile fad as Mike walks toward our table. He pulls up a chair, and sits between Bella and me. This boy needs to learn his place. Bella looks at me uncomfortably as Mike says his hellos.

“If you’ll excuse me Mike, this table is for four only, and that happens to be my date you’re sitting between.”

Mike glares at me. He still loathes me. I smile, and his face contorts into unfathomable hatred. I cough to hide my laugh. Bella smirks slightly. Mike leaves and I grin.

“You’re very welcome.” I say smugly. Bella laughs quietly. The lights dim, and the mayor stands at the podium to talk about the town, his amazing work on it, and finally Carlisle.

“Dr. Carlisle Cullen is a great doctor. He has added exponentially to our hospital’s survival rate, and he has increased our ability to heal patients with deadly diseases…” Wow is this guy ridiculous. His speech lasts for about half an hour. Following it, food is brought out for the guests. Bella eyes my plate skeptically.

“You know, since you’re at a public function honoring your father, you should try to eat something,” she says. I smirk as I take a bite of what appears to be veal. It tastes like dirt.

“Yes,” she says, smiling. I love her smile.

The banquet continues, and Carlisle gives a speech. It’s not very long, and when it is over, the servers take away some of the tables so the guests can dance. Bella looks at me, and I know this is the part she’s worried about. I hear Mike’s thoughts: he wants to ask Bella to dance. I grin wickedly at Bella, and pull her onto the dance floor.

“What are you doing?”

“Dancing. With you.”

“Edward, I thought we weren’t going to dance at this!”

I laugh. “Bella, when is there ever a function in this town where you don’t have to dance?” She smirks at me again, but then her face changes when she sees Mike walking over to us.

“Can I cut in?”

I frown. I hear him thinking, and he knows I won’t embarrass Carlisle by refusing him. “Fine.” I return to my table. It’s empty since Alice and Jasper are dancing already. I hear Bella talking to Mike.

“Mike, you know I love Edward. The two of us plan to be together for quite a while.”

“I know, but you never know what might happen.”

I listen to his thoughts. He’s hoping she’ll cheat on me with him and/or break up with me. He looks at me suddenly. His thoughts reveal that he knows something that I don’t: he plans to hurt Bella unless I make a deal with him. Then I notice his eyes, they aren’t the blue that they should be; his eyes are pitch black. He smiles evilly. He knows I’m listening. I growl under my breath. Stay where you are, Edward. I won’t harm her here. I suppose you’re wondering who I am. Well, I’m Jensen. I borrowed your friend Mike’s body so I could introduce myself to you. You see, I can become anyone I want to be. I used to be an actor, in my human life. Now, as a vampire like yourself, I have special abilities. Mike here, well he won’t remember a thing. I could kill someone, Bella for example and he wouldn’t remember it at all! Now isn’t that convenient? I snarled when he mentioned killing my Bella.

“What do you want?” I hiss.

I want you to get out of this place and come with me. I will me you at this Mike Newton’s store in twenty minutes. You should be able to handle that, don’t you think?

I glare at him and nod. He smiles again. He told Bella he had to go, and then he walked out of the building. Bella walks over to me and sits in the chair next to me.

I just smile.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m going to have to leave soon. I have some business to attend to.”

“Yes…I don’t know how long it will take. If I’m not back when this is over, just go home with Alice and Rose.”

She looks at me, puzzled.

“And Bella?”

“Yes, Edward?”

“I love you.” I kiss her and get up. She grabs my hand.

“I love you, too, Edward.” She pulls me to her for one more kiss. I walk out the door and head to the store.
