“Esme, this might not work…we might lose him…” I hear. My body aches, and it feels like someone wrapped steel bands around my chest.

“Carlisle…Carlisle what’s wrong with me…?” I manage to whisper.

“Edward...Edward you’re awake. Good. I wasn’t sure if you’d make it…” Esme rushes over to me as Carlisle is talking, and hugs me tightly.

“Edward, oh Edward we were so worried about you!”

“Mom, it’s ok…I’m fine….can I have a minute to talk with Carlisle alone?”

“Sure…anything dear…” she says, puzzled.

“Thanks, Mom.” She leaves, and Carlisle walks closer to my couch.

What do you want to know, Edward?

“What happened…to me…and where is Bella? Shouldn’t she be here?”

The first question will be hard to explain, I’m not sure myself, but Bella is at her house. I told her that she should wait there until we could figure out what happened. Alice is with her.

“Good. And me?” Pain engulfs my chest, and I groan. Carlisle looks at me nervously.

I don’t understand what is happening, but I think Jensen managed to give you humanity…you’re changing back now, I do believe. And your chest hurts the most because your heart has been dormant for so long.

“What?”

It’s true. Your flesh is no longer granite-like. The only reason Esme didn’t crush you is because your body is still less delicate than a human’. I don’t know how long it will take, or if it will even be complete. And I don’t know if you’ll survive it.

“Call Alice. I want to spend whatever time is left with Bella. You understand, don’t you?You will always be my father, but I need Bella.”

I understand, son. I’ll have Jasper call her right away.

He left the room. I know he understands, his thoughts prove it. My body aches still, I wish it would stop. I hear the Volvo pull up to the house to let Bella inside.

“Edward?!”

“In here, love.”

“Edward,” she sobs. She kneels by my side, unsure.

“It’s ok, I won’t break,” I joke weakly. I wince as the pain flares again. My beloved looks nervous.

“What did Carlisle say….”

I sigh; I don’t know if I should tell her. “I don’t know if I should tell you…”

“Edward, you can tell me anything. It doesn’t matter how bad it is.”

I wince as I begin to speak softly…“He says that I’m becoming human again…and that I might die.”

Her face changes while I speak. Her eyes light up at the thought of me being human. But they fall as I mention my death.

“Bella…Bella love…don’t worry about me please.” I try to touch her cheek, but my arm cannot support it. She reaches for my hand and holds it to her face. I feel her warm tears on my palm.

“I can’t hear your heart…” I whisper, more to myself than to her. She looks at me, and I know she heard me.

“Bella--”

“Edward, I don’t want you to miss out on your life because of me. Ask Carlisle to turn you back, he can do that, can’t he?” Her bottom lip begins to tremble.

“Bella,” I say, gently rubbing my weak thumb against her lips, “Bella. I would rather die to love you than live a thousand years never knowing you.” I try to turn her head so she’s looking directly at my face. “Bella, I mean it.”

My Bella begins to cry softly, and she lays her head on my chest. It doesn’t hurt. The two of us stayed like that for awhile, she eventually fell asleep. I closed my eyes, too, and rested my head against my soft couch.

“I love you,”

Carlisle ’s POV:

I see my son lying in a hospital bed on life support. His century old body is weak, and his heart is not accustomed to beating. I can hear it from where I stand; it’s pumping blood through is veins, pausing every so often. Bella sits next to his bed, holding his hand. Her tears have run dry by now. It has been four hours since I found the two of them in his room. Edward, my son, my son, how could I have ever let this happen to you? I should have been paying better attention, I’m your father for God’s sake. My wife comes over, and we watch our son together.

Edward’s POV

I open my eyes. My mind is blank, no voices, no heart beats…nothing. Empty….Bella? I look around the room. Everything is fuzzy on the outside edges of my field of vision. I feel something warm on my hand; Bella. I groan softly. She looks up at me, and smiles in relief.

“Edward!” she whispers, as she reaches up to kiss me. She puts her hand to my chest, and laughs softly. “It’s so good to see you awake. Oh!”

“Hmm?” I say quietly, smiling.

“Your eyes…there green!” she laughs. It’s so good to see her smile.

“I-I llof ou, Ella.”

She laughs, “I love you, too, Edward.”

One week later…

I still need help getting around, and my dearest Bella is always there to help. I spent most of the week on my couch, and Carlisle, Esme, Rose, Emmet, Jasper, and Alice even bought Bella a chair to put next to my couch. That’s where she’s been for most of the week, too. I asked Carlisle to go to the jewelry store earlier today to pick up my order. I’m so nervous. I hope it’s not too soon for Bella…I don’t think she quite realizes how much she’s meant to me this past week….here she comes…wish me luck!
