I stayed lying on the floor and closed my eyes. I felt Edward lie down beside me, and I smiled. I could feel him, lying right beside me. His cold arm was touching mine. I took a deep breathe, enjoying the silence. I knew that we were about to have a serious conversation.

Edward suddenly rolled me over so that I was lying on top of him. His eyes glistened. Neither of us spoke, we just stared at each other. I smiled and Edward smiled my favourite crooked grin.

I heard a scream coming from the end of the corridor. The scream sounded angry. I noticed that there was a huge dent in the wall at the end of the corridor. The nurse from earlier was at the end of the corridor, stomping towards us angrily.

Edward rolled us over so that now he was crouched over me. He growled protectively. The nurse came over to us and pulled Edward off me by the hair. She then grabbed his hair and dragged him back down the corridor. I stared in horror. The nurse looked completely average, with blue eyes so she couldn’t be a vampire!

I heard a laugh from behind me and Locke was sitting there, looking idly at his fingernails. I wanted so badly to punch his smug face.

“I suppose you have a few questions for me.” he said in his unusual polite voice.

I didn’t reply I just glared at him, it seemed to amuse him.

“You’re not out of hell yet, Bella.”

My visions kept changing; I couldn’t make any sense of them. I knew Bella and Edward were in trouble but I didn’t know where to find them. I couldn’t smell Bella anywhere. I was starting to get worried. I missed Jasper. I was having no luck finding them here. I should go back and get help from Carlisle. I took one last look around the hospital, but I couldn’t find them anywhere.

Bella POV

“A test Bella, it’s a test.” Locke muttered darkly. “I’m taking a big risk telling you this Bella.”

I still didn’t say anything.

“There all illusions. Nothing is real. It’s all a test. You have to figure it out or you’ll stay in the illusion forever.” he continued urgently.

“How many illusions are there?” I asked, barely understanding but I knew it was important.

“Six,” he said with a small smile.

“Why are you telling me?” I asked.

“Bella… I’ve gone through my whole life only seeing death. I never thought love really existed. But then I saw you and Edward. He willing jumped straight into hell for you.” he looked serious now, and the smile was gone.

“There are… greater forces at work here. I’ll do what I can to help you Bella, but it’ll still be hard. I do not understand their intentions but they want to test you and Edward,” he shook his head angrily.

“Edward said you wanted to teach me a lesson,”

“That was them, not me. I’m sure this all must be confusing for you,” he laughed a little. “I don’t talk to humans much, so I don’t know how to explain this all to you.”

“Um… I’m in hell. It’s a test of me and Edwards love for each other, and I have to go through six illusions?” I attempted to sum up what I had just heard.

Locke smiled at my attempt.

“Just remember nothing is real. Your location will change 6 times. Phoenix was the first illusion. This is the second. That wasn’t Edward that was here a minute ago… it was how ‘they’ see Edward from your memories.

“Bella I know I’m being confusing, but all you need to know is it’s not real!” he urged.

I nodded, utterly confused. I didn’t like to thing what was going to happen to me now.

“Ok… in this illusion, the nurse is a vampire hunter. She can hurt vampires, but can only fight you with the strength of a human. You’ll have to fight her to get Edward back.

“Understand?” he asked.

“Not at all.”

He laughed, then stared off into the distance.

“I have to go. Remember it’s not real Bella!”

And then he was gone. I had no idea what he had just been saying to me. But it’s not real. I understood that much. I repeated the words in my head like a prayer. And then I started walking in the direction the nurse had gone, with absolutely no idea what was coming. Why did Locke have to be so confusing??
