Keira swerved around Esme and headed straight for me. Edward half-crouched in front of me.

She only got half way before she collapsed. She started crying and curled into a ball. She was dripping wet, and she left a small pool of rainwater around her.

“Alice, get her a blanket.” Carlisle commanded.

“I don’t know if we have any.” she replied.

“Just check.” Alice walked upstairs, her step not as exuberant as usual.

A second later she was back, with a forest green, wool blanket.

She walked over to Keira and Esme helped her wrap the blanket around Keira. They stood Keira up and walked her into the front room.

Everyone was quiet as we watched her walk into the front room. She was completely unrecognisable. After I moment I followed her, holding Edward’s hand for support.

Keira was sitting on the sofa, slouching. She was looking down at her hands, which where shaking. There was still nobody talking.

“Keira, I assume.” Carlisle said politely, offering Keira his hand. “I’m Carlisle. And this is my family.”

She looked down at his hand in distaste, and then went back to staring at her hands. Carlisle looked at his hand, and then retracted it.

“You’re wrong,” Edward said softly, staring at Keira.

She looked up, a flicker of emotion in her eyes.

“You couldn’t have done anything.” he continued.

They both stared at each other, a variety of emotions flashing across Keira’s face. Keira opened her mouth and then closed it.

“I-I didn’t know…where to come.” she croaked.

Esme wrapped an arm around her, another example of Esme’s natural mothering instinct.

“Sh-shower?” she winced, as though it was a great pain for her to speak.

Alice helped her up, put an arm around her shoulder and walked her up the stairs.

None if us spoke, until we heard a cry of pain upstairs. Seconds later, Jasper ran into the room.

“What’s the problem?” Emmet asked quickly, standing up.

Jasper winced.

“She’s in a lot of pain. I could feel it. I don’t know how she’s still walking around.” he explained. “Horrible, engulfing pain.”

He sat down on the sofa, closed his eyes and begun rubbing his temples. He stopped and opened his eyes wide. He looked at me in shock. Edward gave a light growl and Jasper closed his eyes again and continued rubbing his temples.

“What can we do for her?” Esme asked sadly.

No one answered. What could we do? Emmet flicked on the TV and everyone stared at it, not really watching it.

Eventually Alice and Keira came back downstairs. Keira was wearing one of Alice’s black tops and trousers.

“I will want my dress back.” she said coldly.

“Sure!” Alice said, trying to lighten the mood. “We’ll wash it for you.”

Keira simply nodded and sat down on the sofa. Her damp hair hung limply down to her shoulders. She took a deep breath.

“I have bad news.” her voice was hollow and forced.

“And what is that?” Carlisle asked calmly.

“Bella is not safe yet.” The concern in her voice surprised me.

“What?” I asked in astonishment.

She didn’t answer my question, but said something even more shocking.

“Locke…gave his life to save you. And I’m going to make damn sure it meant something.” she said angrily. “My life belongs to you…in honour of Locke.” her voice broke and she looked down.

“Thank you,” I choked out. I couldn’t believe she wasn’t furious at me.

“From both of us.” Edward added, and squeezed my hand in relief.

“Well…” she began. “One soul is not equal another. Both myself and Locke were unaware of that fact. I have no idea whether the Sins knew or not.”

“Hell is still calling for Bella. Hell is not getting her. That was what Locke died for, so it is not going to happen!”

“And we will help, of course.” Carlisle added.

“Oh don’t worry, I have a plan…” she trailed off mysteriously. “But there are a few thing you need to know first.”

“Like what?” Emmet asked without thinking. Esme gave his a reproving look and Rosalie smacked him across the head. He looked down at his shoes and then glanced back up apologetically.

“Things…” Keira said sadly. I noticed her arm snake around her waist protectively, and her wince in pain. “Things about me… and Locke.”

Silent tears rolled down her cheeks.
