After Edward hung up the phone, he put his head in his hands.

“Why did Adam call you?” I asked, after the silence had gone for too long.

Edward eyebrows pulled together in confusion. “Adam didn’t call me.” he said.

“Then who was that?” I asked confused.

“Then why did you call her Adam?” I asked frustrated.

Edward laughed. “Alice was giving me some information that made me angry at Adam.”

“Oh,” was all I could say.

He smiled and leaned down to kiss me. But he stopped inches away from my face.

“I love you.” he said, his breath blowing all over my face, making me dizzy.

Then he kissed me. His lips parted a little and so did mine. My hand wrapped around his neck, and one of his wrapped around mine. It was a much longer kiss than I was used to. I could feel him smile and then he broke away. We were both panting and the smile was obvious on his face now.

“Are you sure you really want to marry me?” I asked jokingly, but I felt a small bit of concern.

“More than anything in the world.” he replied, his eyes sparkling.

“So what did you tell Charlie?” I asked after a few minutes.

“Charlie!” Edward said, surprised.

“Uh-oh, we have some explaining to do!” I laughed.

“Bella… I need to tell you what Alice called me about.” he said solemnly. “Alice’s vision, of Charlie getting attacked… well she’s still having it-”

“Which means Charlie is still in danger.” I finished for him.

He just nodded, his topaz eyes watching me carefully. I sighed and leaned back on the pillow.

“Don’t worry, Bella. I won’t let anything happen to Charlie.” he said in a reassuring voice. I couldn’t help but smile at his perfect face.

“And in the mean time, I have something for you.” he said mysteriously, and reached into his jacket pocket. When he took out a little ring box, my heart stopped.

Never taking his eyes of me, he opened the box slowly. Inside was the most beautiful ring I had ever seen. It was a gold band, with a little, circular topaz, which protruded a little, atop it. And two little diamonds either side of the topaz.

“Edward… you shouldn’t have!” I whispered, but the ring was beautiful I was eager to put it on.

“But wait, I’m not sure if I’m ready to tell everyone yet.”

“Then put it on your right hand, and no one will know it’s an engagement ring,” he said, obviously pleased by my reaction.

“Bella Swan… will you marry me?” he asked.

“Of course.”

And then, in an untraditional act, he slipped the ring on the fourth finger on my right hand.

“You should rest now.” he said, leaning in. his breath was making me sleepy but I didn’t want to sleep, I wanted to stay here with my angel.

I didn’t realise how tired I was, but I soon fell asleep. When I woke up it was dark, and Edward wasn’t in my room. His jacket was still slung on the back of the chair he had been sitting on. Where could he have gone? There was a horrible pain in the pit of my stomach, but I ignored it and got out of bed.

I walked out into the halls, and all the lights were turned off. I thought hospitals were busy at night… strange.

I walked around, wheeling the IV behind me. I reached the nurses station, there was only one nurse there and she was standing with her back to me. I tapped her on the shoulder. She turned around slowly, and she looked at me with pleading eyes.

“Sorry, do you know where my boyfriend went?” I asked. She didn’t answer, she just bit her lip.

“Hello?” I said, waving my hands. She still didn’t reply, but she stared at me, as though trying to communicate vital information to me.

It was then I noticed her hand was bleeding. I took a step closer to the counter and saw two hand gripping her legs. Two very pale, white hands.
