I watched in horror as the two most important things in my life stood tensely face to face. Alice was by my side, equally tense. I stood frozen in place, unable to speak or move.
Then, they pounced at each other. I knew it was going to be a fight to the death. I had to do something to stop them. I acted then, on pure instinct. I didn't think, I just did. I threw myself into the air between them. I closed my eyes and hoped that I wouldn't be too late.
The pain stopped. I sat up quickly, too quickly. It was over. I was a vampire.
My eyes wandered through the blackness. There was nothing. Nothing except for Jacob Black. He stared at me with pure, unadulterated hate. Then, slowly at first, but gaining speed and shaking the whole time, he ran towards me. He jumped into the air, transforming into a wolf mid-flight. I ran from him, but it was hard. He was extraordinarily fast, even to a vampire.
Finally, I knew I had to stop. There was no point to this. I turned around and faced my fate. Jacob Black didn't hesitate. He pounced at me.
I woke with a start.
"Edward?!" I cried.
No answer. I whipped my head around, thinking I would see him lying next to me, but he wasn't. There was only a note, sitting on the pillow. It had Edward's graceful handwriting on it.
Bella, It read
I am so sorry to leave on such short notice, but I am going hunting with Jasper and Emmett and Emmett was ready to go now. He threatened to wake you up and I definitely didn't want to deprive you of sleep when you're already extremely tired. Once again, I am sorry and, as always, I have left my heart with you. Be safe. I love you.
Ugh! I had wanted to talk to someone about my nightmare and he had seemed like the best person. But, then again, it probably wouldn't actually be a very good idea to tell him how afraid I was of Jake hating me, no matter how many times he assured me he wouldn't. That would only give Edward another excuse not to change me just yet. And Jake was the only reason I didn't want to change, but I had to choose and I knew who I couldn't live without.
But who else could I talk to? Neither of my parents nor any of my human friends knew that Jake was werewolf and Edward was a vampire, let alone that they were mortal enemies and I was going to be a vampire soon, too. So, that crossed them off my list.
Jacob was never an option. I mean, come on, what could I say? ‘Hey Jake, guess what?! I had a nightmare that you're going to hate me when I'm a vampire and try and kill me! Isn't that great?' No. Plus, I don't think I could go through saying good-bye to Jake, again.
That left the Cullens. None of them could really understand having a werewolf as a best friend, let alone dreaming about him hating you.
Yet, I couldn't just keep this all bottled up inside of me. I guess Alice would probably be my best bet. She wouldn't be able to empathize, but she might be able to sympathize, more so than the other Cullens.
Once I had decided to discuss it with Alice, I went downstairs to get the cordless phone. I looked out the window in passing. Charlie's cruiser was gone.
As I reached down to grab the phone, it rang. I quickly picked it up and pushed the ON button.
"Hello?" I said.
"The answer is yes!" cried an excited voice that I recognized as Alice's.
"Huh?" I was totally confused.
"I Saw that you would call and ask if you could come over. And the answer is yes! I was going to call anyways, since Edward is gone hunting with Emmett and Jasper, and Rosalie and Esme are shopping, and Carlisle's at work. I thought we might go over some wedding details!"
Ugh! Separately, wedding and details were two of my least favorite words, but, put together, they were three times worse.
"Well...are you coming?" she asked, smugly. She already knew the answer. I didn't really want to go, but I definitely didn't want to hurt her feelings.
"I guess so," I replied, more to assure myself than Alice.
"Great! Do you want me to come pick you up?" She sounded thrilled.
"No, that's fine, Alice. I'll drive myself. I need to eat first. Give me thirty minutes." I also needed some more time to think about my dream.
"Okay, Bella. See you then!" She hung up.
I stood there for a while until the tone started beeping. Slowly, I pressed the OFF button and set the phone down.
Oh great! What had I gotten myself into? On the one hand, I hated planning big events, but on the other hand, I could talk to Alice. And I really needed to talk to Alice.
