I had the sensation that I had been out for a while, so I was disoriented. When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was a bright light.
"Am I...dead?" I asked.
"Oh, Bella! You're awake!" Edward sighed with relief. I took that as a ‘no'.
I looked closer at my surroundings, realizing I was in Carlisle's Mercedes, leaned up against Edward.
"In a nutshell, you lost consciousness, Carlisle told Charlie you're dead, we replaced you with a very realistic dummy, and left. Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Emmett, and Jasper stayed behind to help with funeral prep. We needed Alice to drive."
"I don't know why I can't help plan the funeral, since I'm getting gypped out of a wedding, and all!"
"You chose to come, Alice! Remember?"
"I know, but still."
"How's Charlie coping?" I interjected.
"All right. Carlisle and Esme are helping him. Renee and Phil are flying to Forks as we speak."
"Do you think they'd be happy if they knew that I was choosing this life instead of dying?" We both knew I wasn't talking about just Renee or Charlie.
"I really couldn't say," Edward whispered, a small trace of pain in his voice.
"So, where are we going now?" I asked, moving on to lighter subjects.
"We're going to Denali. That would probably be the best place for the...transformation. Are you afraid?" He easily read the terror on my face.
This time, though, he had the motives wrong. The terror I felt wasn't induced by the transformation. No, I had gotten over that long ago. The fear I felt now was fueled by a completely different, and slightly ridiculous, reason.
"Who's going to be in Denali?"
Edward looked confused at the course our conversation had taken.
"Um, Carmen, Eleazer, Tanya, Katrina, and Irina."
"T-tanya?" I gulped.
"Ah, I see." He hesitated; I waited. "Bella, there's no need for you to be so silly! We already went over this-blondes are so not my type."
"I'm not worried so much about you and her," I explained. "I'm more worried about what she'll think of me." I gasped at the effort of talking so much.
"What she thinks of y-?"
"What if she doesn't think I'm good enough for you? What if she's, well, you know...mean?"
"Bella, Tanya is extremely nice and not at all a grudge-holder," Alice chirped up from the front seat.
"So, she won't hate me?"
"And there's no need to worry at all?"
"And I don't see how anyone in their right mind could think you don't deserve me!" Edward interjected.
I knew there was no point in arguing with Edward, but I couldn't help grumbling, "I don't see how anyone in their right mind could think I do!"
"Denali would be a lovely place to hold a wedding!" Alice said, subtly changing the subject.
"Hm, I guess you don't really get your side of the bargain anymore, do you?" I asked Edward. I also realized that I wouldn't get my other demand either.
"It's okay. I'd take the switch any day."
"What time is it, anyways?" I asked out of the blue.
"It's about 1:00 p.m. We should be in Denali in a couple of hours."
"A couple of hours? Where are we?"
"Somewhere in Canada. We're extremely lucky your passport from your mom's wedding hasn't expired yet."
"And you said 1:00? As in, we've only been driving for a few hours?"
"No, 1:00 as in, we've been driving for over a day."
"A day? I was out for an entire day?!"
"Yeah. I was afraid you were about to...die, and we would have to do the transformation along the side of the road, but you held out."
"Maybe we should. Do the transformation right here, I mean. It sure as heck isn't as frightening as meeting Tanya!"
"We already talked about this. There's absolutely nothing for you to worry about."
"Fine. I think I'll go to sleep now. Wake me up when we get there. Or better yet-don't wake me up at all!"
"Go to sleep, Bella!" Edward laughed.
