4. Chapter 4

“Ah, Carlisle,” we heard Aro greet him enthusiastically, “it’s been far too long. Still on that silly animal diet it see,”
“Yes, I still cannot bring myself to harming any humans. And it has been too long since we’ve seen each other last though you did have a run in with part of my family a couple of years ago.”
“It was such a shame that we had to meet under those terrible conditions.” Wait, what? What bad conditions did the Cullens get in? “And it is also a shame that we are meeting under bad circumstances all over again.”
“I do not know what you are talking about. How are we under unfavorable conditions now?”
“Well, it seems that we are looking for two vampires. We followed their scents and they led us to your house. Now if you would be so kind as to hand then over we shall be on our way without any conflict.” Aro stepped into the room. His crimson red eyes sparkled at the slight of Becca and me.
“Now, Aro, these are friends and old acquaintances of ours such as you are. Perhaps if we could go upstairs and discuss these matters together in my study,” Carlisle proposed, gesturing towards the stairs. Aro hesitated before taking one last look at me and my sister and then followed Carlisle up the steps.
“And no listening!” Carlisle ordered mentally, obviously intended for Edward to verbalize since so far, none but Jasper knew what my power is. Besides, all Jasper knew was I could manipulate emotions.
“Carlisle doesn’t want any of us listening,” Edward told the rest of the group soundly slightly disappointed.
The next thirty minutes were possibly as painful as my transformation. My future was being decided upstairs right now and I wasn’t even allowed to know what they were saying. The room was silent excluding the soft sound of Rebecca and Rosalie flipping through magazines while we waited. If it wasn’t my own impatience that was going to send me crazy, it would be Felix.
Felix was disgusting me. With his thought, with his fantasies. I fought as hard as I could to resist my urge to gag. Edward was having the same feelings except he had more rage in him. I would catch Felix glancing at me and even when we locked eye contact, he wouldn’t look away. One time when that happened, Edward growled at him but it only made Felix smirk bigger. I shivered at the creep.
Jane’s thoughts abruptly entered my mind. “Why won’t she crumple? There is no way two people are immune to my power.” I saw Jane staring intensely at Rebecca though Becca wasn’t paying attention to anything besides some photograph of a girl modeling a dress for Juicy Couture. Jane’s face was also starting to look like if she could, she would be busting a vein any moment.
“Could you not do that?” I asked Jane. She shot me a dirty look but was no longer staring at my sister
After what seemed like an eternity, Carlisle and Aro rejoined us in the front room. Aro was perky as ever while Carlisle was a bit more weary.
“We have come to an agreement,” Carlisle started
“Rebecca and Isabella are to join the Volturi!” Aro clapped his hands together joyfully like a child who just discovered how many presents were left under the tree from Santa Clause.
“WHAT?!?!” yelled Emmett, Jasper, Alice, Esme, Edward, Rebecca, and I all at once. Rosalie stayed indifferent and Felix grinned with pleasure.
“But,” stressed Carlisle, “They will only have to stay in the Volterra with the rest of the Volturi one month out of each year.”
“Yes and we will have a splendid time in July. That is when you are coming for your first visit. You should see the festivals that are held, if that interests you.” Aro smiled at me. I tried to do the same but failed.
“Is there anything else you need?” Rebecca asked
“No, that is all. Goodbye all. It was wonderful to see you again,” Aro seemed to be the only one who felt that way. Well, besides Felix. The rest of the Volturi appeared to be more enthralled at the thought of leaving.
The Volturi filed out the door and Carlisle closed it behind them. Everyone visibly relaxed now that they were gone.
“I’d say we go off that one pretty easy, would you?” Becky asked me.
I couldn’t help but to smile. “Yes, it was the easiest out of all our days so far. But that only makes me worry that something big or worst is going to happen.”
“Well, it is now five thirty. That means we only have six and a half more hours to go. I think we can make it while keeping all of our limbs attached.”
“I do like it when my limbs remain on me,” I told her
“Ok,” Edward interrupted, “Before you guys start that freaky twin conversation thing again, do you mind telling us what you meant by ‘it was the easiest out of all our days so far’, exactly how you were changed, and what you have been doing for the past twenty-five years.” I struggled not to roll my eyes.
“Fine, but it is a long story so you guys might want to sit down,” after the Cullens had complied, I began telling them of Matilda. How today was the third of our cursed days. I told them about the last twenty-five years of my life were spent wandering, trying to find purpose for myself.
“And your transformation?” Edward persisted. I had deliberately been avoiding that subject because it brought back painful memories. It reminded me of the three days of hell during the transformation. It reminded me of how I had always wanted Edward to be the one to change me. It reminded me of all those I had to leave behind because I was turned. I know my transformation also hurt Rebecca. She always blamed herself for not getting there quick enough. And for not having enough strength to escape the vampires holding her down.
“Well, after you left Forks,” All the Cullens slightly flinched. “I became friends with that boy from the reservation, Jacob Black. Do you remember him Edward; he was the guy that came to our prom? Anyways, we became best friends until a few months later, when he started avoiding me. As it turned out, Jake had become a werewolf. Did you know the kids who live in La Push do that?” Carlisle nodded. “During the time that Jacob was ignoring me, I went into the forest . . . hiking,” no need to tell them about me hearing voices or that I was searching for the meadow. “I came across Laurent, one of James’ coven members. He was now working with Victoria, the other member of their group, and Victoria wanted revenge. She didn’t know that you had left, otherwise I think she would have left me alone. She wanted revenge for Edward killing James. James and she were close. So Victoria thought that in killing me, it would make you guys even. Mate for mate. But that was no longer true.” I didn’t want to continue anymore. Even though I fought against it, it still hurt for me to remember that day in the forest when Edward told me he didn’t love me anymore.
“Before Laurent could attack, a pack of giant wolves showed up and chased him away. I later discovered that was Jacob and his friends. When I figured out what Jacob was and confronted him, I told him who Laurent and Victoria were. They agreed to protect me and keep me safe from them. They said it was too dangerous for me to be on my own with Victoria still after me. They were risking their lives for me.” I didn’t want to go on. Rebecca, censing my distress, continued the story.
“Bella still didn’t know about the days we had to be extra cautious. So I decided to keep tabs on her while keeping her unaware that I was still alive. Or that I existed at all. When the second day came, Bella was sleeping in her room. I wasn’t paying attention and neither was the pack. I should have been watching her more closely. Victoria slipped into her room and took her. When I had realized what had happened, I tried to follow but Victoria brought friends. They grabbed me but still took me to where Bella and Victoria were. They held me down and made me watch,” Rebecca looked down at her hands, totally devastated. It also hurt her to remember the night.
“I’ll save you the gory details that I had to watch. No matter how much I thrashed and fought, I couldn’t get free. I wasn’t strong enough. I still hate myself for it. Anyways, when Victoria was done and had . . . um . . . drunken her fill. . . she and her goons left. I let them go and went straight to Bella. Victoria hadn’t done a good job. Bella was still alive. But just barely. I took her to the house I was renting out and waited with her through the three day transformation. When she awoke, I told her what had happened and who I was. Of course, that was unnecessary because my power doesn’t work on vampires, but she didn’t get her memory back immediately. She got them back gradually.”
I decided to take over. “After my change was done, I met with the pack one last time. They explained they would hold me to the same treaty they agreed on with you. But we had to leave. We couldn’t afford to be recognized. I still have Jacob call me every now and then to update me on Charlie but besides that we’ve lost touch,” The last part saddened me. I really missed him.
“Wow, you’ve been through a lot Bella,” Carlisle told me. “I only wish we could have been there to help you through it.” I nodded not knowing what else to do. “And you, Becky, what is your story?” Carlisle asked.
Becky gave him small smile. “My story is for another time, Carlisle, if you don’t mind.” Becky didn’t like to talk about what happened to her. It took forever for me to drag the story out of her.
Carlisle nodded and smiled understandingly. “If you don’t mind, may I ask what your powers are?”
Becca returned the smile. “Of course. I can alter human memories, change the appearance of myself and others, and I can ‘borrow’ another vampire’s power but it wears off after a while.”
“Can you demonstrate you powers to us?”
“Sure,” Rebecca waltzed over the Alice but then hesitated.
“May I?” she asked Alice, remembering her manners. Alice bobbed her head and Becca put a hand on her shoulder. At that moment, Alice’s short, spiky hair grew down to her waist in beautiful curls. Rebecca also added a few blue highlights into her midnight black hair that looked fantastic.
Alice grabbed her now long hair in amazement. “How do I look?” she asked her husband.
“As beautiful as ever,” Jasper answered, grabbing her around the waist and kissed the top of her head. “Well that sure helped.” Alice thought.
“I really like your hair like that,” I reassured her. Alice beamed at me.
“Me too.” Becky agreed. “Just tell me when you get bored with it and want to go back to normal or have something else done to it.”
“As for my other two powers,” Becky continued “Since there are no humans here, I cannot demonstrate that power. But because we all shook hands, I can show you my last power.” All of a sudden everyone in the room burst into laughter. Emmett fell off the couch he was sitting on and rolled onto the ground laughing so hard. Even I couldn’t stop. But a sudden it happened, it ended just as quickly. “You could probably tell, but that was Jasper’s,”
Emmett picked himself up off the ground looking slightly confused as to how and why he ended down there. Once he seated himself back on the couch he asked “What can you do Bella?”
“My power is a bit of a coincidence. I have basically all of your powers. I can read minds, manipulate emotions, have an aversion to human blood, and can have visions when I wish. They don’t hit me at random like they do to you Alice. I have more control over that. When it comes to reading minds and feeling other’s feelings, it’s the same. I do it only when I want to. So I’m as Becky puts it, a ‘Cullen package’.” I explained to the Cullens.
I looked over at Emmett. “I am also pretty strong so I could take any of you, especially Emmett on any day.” I said slightly smug knowing that would fire him up.
“You are so on!” Emmett cried.
“Oh,” I answered. “Bring it!” I gave him a ‘come hither’ motion with my fingers.
Before we could start wrestling, I was interrupted by my cell phone ringing. I checked the caller I.D. It read JACOB. That was odd. He had just called me last week.
“Hello, Jake” I said into the phone though it came out more like a question.
“Bella you need to come to Forks. Now.”
“Why?” I asked, my voice full of anxiety. “What’s wrong?”“It’s Charlie, Bells.” Jacob answered me. “I’m sorry but he’s in the hospital and things aren’t looking so good. You gotta get down here.” I didn’t want to hear any more. Jacob’s voice started to fade away like we were in a long and we were standing at opposite ends. Then my vision went black.
