I hate high school. It’s like a prison in which I cannot reach out of. Seriously, listening to all the petty teenagers, the dramatic teachers, and then their thoughts. It’s enough to make me rip my hair out. Or perhaps, someone else’s.
Wow. Edward is so hot when he pushes his hair out of his eyes like that…a familiar thought of an adolescent girl entered my mind. I shifted a little in my seat at the front of my English class. Idiotic teacher who alphabetizes her student’s seats just had to put me in the front, where I couldn’t stay out of everyone’s sight. As if I hadn’t learned the same material about 50 times over.
“And the end punctuation of the sentence should be…?” Mrs. Greene said, pointing to the large overhead projection. I didn’t even have to look up from my desk to know what the answer was. Oh come on, we’ve been learning these things for three weeks, now! The teacher’s thoughts said.
“Hello, does anyone know? Anyone?” she said out loud. “Ok, Jessica, you tell us.” Edward…What? Oh, the answer. Jessica’s scattered thoughts were always quite indecent.
“The square root of 100?” She said. The teacher sighed and shook her head.
“Ms. Stanley, this is English, not Math. Okay, obviously no one is paying any attention; maybe we should just move up the test to tomorrow? Yes, tomorrow.” Mrs. Greene said, writing it on the board. Abruptly, the word ‘test’ and ‘tomorrow’ entered everyone’s mind and a number of groans and whimpers situated behind me.
Then, as the bell rang and I stood up from my desk, I heard a stranger thought. Why is Edward so alone? Alex told me that he is gay… I froze, and slowly looked for the owner of that thought; Michael Newton. He looked startled that I was staring at him, so I turned back around and headed for lunch.
Oh my gosh, it’s Edward…it sucks that he’s gay, why do the hot ones always have to be gay? I heard two more thoughts of such opinions and it made me testy by the time I was at lunch. Forks High school was so small that you could say one thing to one person and by another 10 minutes, the whole school would know.
“Hey Edward!” Alice said. I nodded and sat down, not even buying a lunch for my fake prop. Rosalie was looking in her compact mirror, obviously admiring herself, Emmett was flexing his muscles and Jasper was sitting rigidly and staring at his plate. Alice was as usually jumping in her seat, and saying ‘hello’ to everyone who walked by.
“Guess what I just found out?” She said, looking around at everyone. We all looked up, trying to bring at least a little excitement into our dreary lives.
“Shawn Western is going to ask Edward to the homecoming dance!” Everyone busted out laughing and even Jasper relaxed, forgetting about the blood around him. If I were human, I would have been blushing from embarrassment. I ducked my head and glowered at my shoes.
“Stop it now!” I growled under my breath. Everyone quieted down but they were all thinking snide thoughts about me, taunting me; especially Emmett, who is always concerned with my virginity. I clenched my teeth.
“Hey, can I sit here?” a voice behind me said. I was too preoccupied to even notice the person coming. I turned around and felt my eyes widen. It was that Shawn Western they were all talking about. I looked around desperately, trying to find escape. There were two other empty chairs at our table, and one was next to me.
“Yeah, please do!” Emmett said to the boy. I felt the power of my glare should have physically hurt Emmett, but he just grinned and winked at me.
“Thanks…so Edward, how are you?” Shawn asked me. I shrugged and looked the other way. I know it was rude and improper, but…it was gross. Oooh, a shy one is he? I can change that…Shawn’s thoughts said. I had to resist the gag that formed in my throat.
“Yeah, I heard you were a quiet kind of guy…so I wanted to ask you something?” he asked. This time I didn’t even stop the gag, and turned around sharply. “Will you go to---“
“I’m not gay, and I’m not interested, so if you could just leave me alone, I really wouldn’t mind. Ok?” I asked rudely. Oh my, if mum were here, I would have received a sharp slap. The boy looked stricken, and his thoughts became fogged as he nodded and got up, leaving the cafeteria.
The whole room was quiet and staring at me, some with shock, and some with pure glee. The girls were excited that I was now available again, and the boys had mixed emotions. I turned back around and saw the faces of my family.
Alice was glaring at me, Rosalie was smirking, and Emmett was laughing. Jasper was rigid again, because the boy had come too close to him.
Haha, You are such a goner, Edward, you’re not going to get any sex for the rest of your life if you keep this up. Emmett thought. Shawn and Edward sitting in a tree…
“If I hear the word ‘gay’ or ‘Shawn’ one more time, I will punch a hole through the wall.” I said; getting up swiftly and leaving the cafeteria, going to my car.
Later that night, I was sitting at the piano, playing a depressing Beethoven melody. I felt Esme sit next to me, but I didn’t stop playing, letting her get her thoughts together before she spoke to me.
“Edward…” she put her head on my shoulder and I stopped, putting my arm around her.
“Yes, Esme?” I asked softly. Esme’s motherly nature made me feel younger; only a teenager once again.
“You know I worry about you, right? Maybe you were too young when Carlisle changed you…I just don’t want you to be alone. I want you to experience love, and bliss, and happiness, or at least companionship with someone outside the family.” She said. I sighed and closed my eyes.
“Esme, you don’t have to worry about me, I’m perfect. I am happy and I love you and Carlisle, and everyone else. I don’t need a companion…they complicate things.” I laughed, and she smiled.
“Yes, but what if you’re alone forever? Wouldn’t you want--”
“To lose your virginity?” Emmett said, bounding down the stairs. I got up and punched him squarely in the jaw. He had me pinned down in a second, and I would have released all my anger on him, until Carlisle came through the door; doctor bag in one hand, and his lab coat in the other.
“Emmett! Edward! Not in the house!” Esme yelled. Carlisle chuckled and kissed his wife on the cheek.
“What is it about this time, boys?” He said, getting Emmett off of me. I stood up and glared at Emmett, daring him to tell.
“Nothin’” Emmett said; I relaxed. “Just tryin’ to figure out if Edward’s gay or not.” He finished. I punched him in the gut with most of my force, making him crash through the brick wall of Esme’s treasured living room. Esme gave a shriek and Carlisle was just staring at the hole. Everyone else ran downstairs.“I told you I would punch a hole in the wall…it just happened to be in the shape of your body."
