Charlie roared with anger as he saw me walking towards the house, hand in hand with Edward, with Jacob’s eyes burning a hole in my back. He would be watching the whole thing, I could tell.

Charlie’s face turned puce as it became clear that Edward wasn’t leaving. His hands clenched into fists, and a vein on his forehead throbbed with the might of his anger.

“You.” He said gesturing to Edward. “Home. Now!”

“Sir, I…” Charlie cut him off. “I said, GO HOME! I need to talk to my daughter.” Charlie stressed the last two words, as if he thought that I had forgotten that that he was my father.

I looked up at Edward, pleading with my eyes. I didn’t want Edward in any more trouble with my father, after all he was the Chief of Police, and he could make trouble for Edward’s family.

Edward looked like he was about to refuse, but then his shoulders sagged, and he nodded. He said something to me quietly, but the wind blew it away as he walked towards his car. He smiled at me encouragingly before driving away.

I turned back around to face my father. He was ranting. “You are my daughter, and as long as you live under my roof you will not be anywhere near death contraptions like the one obstructing my driveway! And you brought Jacob into it too! What if Jacob were hurt? How would you feel then? And did you ever stop to think what it would do to the rest of us if you were killed? I know what this is about! This is about that boy!”

I grimaced, knowing that by this time Edward was in my room waiting.

“Edward wasn’t even here, Dad! How could he possibly have anything to do with this?”

Charlie looked at me with a resigned look on his face. “Bella, your mom left me, remember? I know exactly how it feels to want to hurt yourself to get back at the person that hurt you. I drank, I fished incessantly because I knew that your mom hated it when I did. I did everything that I could think of to convince myself I didn’t need her.”

“Dad!” I yelled, horrified. Edward was hearing this whole conversation, and the last thing that I needed was him feeling even more guilty about the last couple of months. It was probably too late, but I wanted to change the subject, now. “I really don’t want to talk to you about this. You already have your opinions, and nothing I say will change your mind. It’s true, all those times I said I hurt myself in the garage, it was a motorcycle accident, ok?” Ooops. Apparently he hadn’t put that together yet. “You lied to me, too? Wasn’t it bad enough that you were doing things you know I dissaprove of? You had to lie about it too?”

“Dad! It wasn’t about you! I just wanted to do something different! Now can I just have my punishment so I can go to bed?”

“I am not done discussing this Isabella Swan, but fine. We can finish this tomorrow. Here’s the deal. You may go to school. You may go to work. Then, you will come home and cook dinner, do homework, and go to your room. No Jacob, no phone calls, no friends, and definitely no Edward! He isn’t good for you, and I don’t want you near him.” My eyes blurred with tears. What had I expected? Why did I think that he would let me spend time with Edward? “Whatever.” I bit out. I turned and ran gracelessly up the stairs, tripping several times. When I finally reached my room, I tumbled head first into the bedside table, and everything went dark for a long time.

I knew it was a dream, but I couldn’t seem to wake up. Edward and I were sitting on a cloud looking down at the world. I reached towards him, but he pulled away, and started to fade into the stars. The last thing I saw as I awoke was a single blood red tear falling from his eye.

I woke up screaming. “NO! Edward, NO! Come back!”

Cold fingers traced my face, soothing me. “I’m right here, my love. And I will never leave you again.” I relaxed, knowing it had been a dream. I started to sit up, but Edward pushed me back down. “Not so fast. You hit your head pretty hard when you crashed into that table last night.” He told me with a chuckle. I winced as I touched my head gingerly. “Where’s Charlie?” I asked, remembering. “He went into the office.” His face clouded over as he told me this. “Was he right?” He asked me quietly. “Right about what?” I asked, feigning confusion. I knew exactly what he was talking about. “Were you trying to hurt yourself because of me?” I sighed. “Not exactly. I just wanted to break my promise, since you had broken yours.” I so wanted to wipe the pain away from his face. It hurt me more than it did him, to see him hurt like that. “No, Edward, don’t. That wasn’t your fault. It was my own stupidity. I shouldn’t have done that, and I know it.”

“But if I hadn’t left…” He trailed off.

“Fine.” I snapped. “It was your fault, but you can make up for it by promising to never, ever leave me again.” He smiled that gorgeous crooked smile, and said, “Done.”

Then he drew me into his arms, and we sat like that all day, not moving.

When twilight approached, however, he pulled away reluctantly. “I have to go hunting. I’m sorry. I’ll send some one to keep you company, though, so you won’t be alone tonight.” All of this was said in an anxious rush, so that I had to concentrate to understand what he was saying. “All right.” I said resignedly. Then, to my surprise, I yawned. Edward laughed. “You’d better get some sleep. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He kissed my lips gently, and then he was gone. I took my ‘human moment’ and got ready for bed. I slept soundly and dreamlessly, all the while wishing that Edward was beside me.

I woke later that night with a start. I had an odd sense that some one was in the room with me. I glanced around the room, but I couldn’t see anything. I sighed in relief and collapsed backwards on my pillow. A low chuckle came from the doorway. I sat bolt upright, terrified. It couldn’t be. It was. Victoria stood in my doorway. Fear paralyzed me, made it so I couldn’t move or scream.

“How did you manage to survive this long again? Oh, that’s right. You always had some one protecting you. But I don’t see any boyfriends or dogs around tonight, do you?” Her laugh made me shiver. It was like nails on a chalkboard. Her piercing red eyes bore into mine, making her red hair seem even brighter, threateningly so.

“I still haven’t figured out how a silly little girl like you managed to get my James killed. You are meaningless, while James was infinitely valuable.” She began to walk towards me. “Little Isabella, do you know how it feels to lose some one? Some one who was more important to you than life itself? Well, think of it this way. How would you feel if I killed your precious Edward. How would you feel then? Probably how he will feel when he realizes that you’re gone.” A sickly smile spread over her face. It seemed that the closer she got, the redder her eyes got. Suddenly, she was right beside me. It was all I could do to stifle my shriek. I couldn’t let Charlie get hurt. She took me by the throat, and whispered in my ear. “Now you will find out what it is like to die.” I closed my eyes, waiting for the pain.

It never came. Instead, there was a growl from the window. Victoria whirled around. She dropped me, and began to back towards the door. “What are you doing here dog?”

“Protecting Bella from filthy bloodsuckers like yourself.” Came Sam’s calm reply

“You’ll find that evil doesn’t die so easily.”

“That’s what makes it worth it.”

Victoria simply smiled. It reminded me of the Cheshire cat, for some insane reason.

She rubbed her forefingers together, and to my horror they began to glow red.

Sam growled so menacingly that the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.

The door downstairs slammed shut. Charlie was home. No. “Daddy’s home, Bella. How about we give him a proper welcome?” And with those words she raised her hand, and fire shot from her fingertips, catching the house on fire. As the smoke flooded into my lungs, all I could think about was Charlie. Some how I knew I would never see him again. “Dad,” I choked out, reaching weakly for the door. Then I fell into the mists of the haunting.

When I woke up, everything was tearing past at impossible speeds. It took me awhile to orient myself enough to realize that I was in the forest, with a werewolf dragging me by the ankle. His jaws were clamped to my ankle, but carefully, so he didn’t break the skin. “Victoria?” I moaned weakly. Everything stopped moving, and suddenly the human Sam was standing before me. “She got away. Are you alright?” I nodded, then asked. “Will you take me home?”

“Bella, your house is completely gone. I’m sorry.”

All I could do was shake my head. “To the Cullen’s.” I croaked. Sam’s eyes narrowed. “Never. I’ll take you to Billy’s. Him and Jake will take care of you.”

“Please. If you won’t take me, at least let me go.”

He shook his head angrily. Then he growled, tensing. He shifted into a wolf in the blink of an eye. “What…” A blur of whit shot past me, hitting Sam straight on. Emmett’s giant form knocked Sam onto the ground. Sam fought back, biting savagely. With one hand, Emmett tore open Sam’s throat, and drank from him. Bile rose in my throat, and I had to look away. “Emmett, come on. Please. I need Edward. Please.”

Emmett looked up, his eyes changing from black to gold. I could hear the sounds of the remaining Quileute wolves crashing through the woods, so I knew that he could. He nodded, and swung me into his arms.
