Alanna and Aaron went into Aaron’s room, and Edward and I went into ours.

“Edward? What’s going on? Who was that, and why do you look like you just saw a ghost?” Edward looked at me speculatively, as if he was deciding whether or not he should tell me. “Sit down, and I’ll explain what I know.” I settled myself down on the bed, and waited for him to start speaking.

“Before I met you, during the time I was a true monster, I met Aaron and Alanna. They were human then, and so in love their thoughts made me sick. Alanna was a student at a prestigious music school, and Aaron was in college for designing of some sort. My acquaintance at that time, Angelo, thought that we should feed off of them. He enjoyed being cruel, and wanted to make them suffer by watching each other die. Thankfully, I had retained enough humanity to refuse. They reminded me so much of my parents, and Carlisle and Esme.

"He scoffed, and told me that if I didn’t help, he’d do it himself. I thought he was bluffing, even he couldn’t’ be that cruel. But he did. While I was hunting that night, I heard sirens. I followed the sound, and found Angelo lying on the street, practically dead. A beautiful woman came out of the flames carrying who I knew to be Alanna’s body. “Burn him.” She told me, and held out a lit match. I don’t know why I listened; it was like she had some kind of trance over me.

I asked her who she was, but all she would say was that she was dariseyha. Then she told me, “Go into the house, and you will find a man who is being changed into one of your kind. Take him to Alaska, and leave him there. You will understand in time.”

Then, there was a flash of purple light, and she was gone, along with Alanna. I never thought that I would understand what she was saying, but after that night, I couldn’t hunt humans any longer. I went back to Carlisle and Esme the next day.”

I simply stared at him for a while. “What does all of that mean now?”

He regarded me solemnly. “I don’t know.”

There was a knock on t he door as we stared at each other. “Come in.” I called, not moving from the bed. To my great surprise, Aaron stood in the doorway. “Would you two come over to my room? Alanna really needs to talk to you, especially you Bella.” I flashed a quick look at Edward, and he nodded. We followed Aaron down the hall, and into his room. Alanna sat in a chair facing the window, looking like she would rather be outside. “Aly, I brought them.” She spun around, and smiled at Edward and I.

“Edward, will you let me borrow Bella for a few minutes? I need to explain some things to her.” Edward looked uncertain for a moment, but Aaron led him out of the room before he could say anything. It was then that I noticed Aaron’s hair. It was brown, and hung to his shoulders; instead of the green mohawk that I was sure he had yesterday. “Wasn’t his hair green yesterday?” I asked.

Alanna laughed. “Yes, that’s his gift. He can change his appearance at will.”

“Um, that’s, um, unusual.” Alanna laughed again, a laugh that sounded more like bells, or wind chimes than any voice had a right to.

“Yes, I suppose. Now, I’m sure you’re wondering why I asked to speak to you alone.”

I nodded.

“Well, what I’m about to tell you, Edward can’t know. If he were to find out, the world would be in extreme danger.” I nodded again, not sure what she wanted me to say.

“I’m going to start by explaining to you about dariseya’s. We are called Protectors of Destiny for a reason. We are assigned charges when we are born, and it is our duty to protect them, and their destiny for the duration of their lives. We are only assigned to people with important destinies, and yours is one of the most important destinies of all.”

I stared at her expectantly. Was she going to tell me my destiny?

“Your destiny, my dear, is to end a war that has been going on since the beginning of time. It is your destiny to bring peace between vampires and werewolves.”

Was she kidding? Didn’t she realize that my brother had recently killed a werewolf, and that I was a vampire, and all werewolves hated the sight of me?

She could apparently read thoughts, because she answered mine. “I know it seems impossible, but everything will come out all right in the end. You and I will be very good friends, I can tell already. I will be here to help, and so will your family and Aaron.” She looked at me appraisingly. “How much do you know about Aaron?”

“All I know is that Edward was there when he was changed, and that he went to college for some kind of designing thing. Oh and that you two lived together, and he can change his appearance at will.”

Alanna smiled sadly. “You two will also become friends. You’ll need his help to fulfill your destiny. I think that once you understand everything, your destiny will be easier to understand.”

Suddenly, Alanna’s body seemed to grow fuzzy. “Shit,” she mumbled. “I need to feed my harpie side. Would you like to come with me? I feed off of animals too, just not their blood.”

And that was how I ended up showing a winged woman with a beak and claws the best place to find and animal who would fight back. She struck a polar bear with deadly precision, and it went down. Then she proceeded to rip strips of meat of it, and swallow it. If I was still a human, I would have been sick. What a strange world I existed in.
