There was something wrong with Edward. But what was it? His eyes weren’t their normal color. He had assured me that everything was fine, and that he was done hunting, but I didn’t think it was right. I decided to take his word for it, at least until we had decided what we were going to do next.

We were all assembled at the dining room table to make decisions about our future. Carlisle sat at the head of the table, and Esme sat at his right hand. Edward sat at his left, and I sat beside Edward. Alice sat by me, and Jasper across from her. Rosalie and Emmett sat at the other end of the table.

Carlisle started the conversation we had all been dreading. “So, what now?”

“We obviously have to move, the question is, to where.”

“I think we should move to a different country.” Rosalie said. I blanched. I really didn’t want to leave Rene that far away. Oh no. Rene. What was I going to do about Rene? The others were continuing their conversation.

“I don’t want to leave the country, Rose.” Alice told Rosalie. “The United States is perfect for us. There are a lot of different types of people here, and we have lived here practically forever.”

“I agree with Alice, Rosalie.” Carlisle settled that argument before it had even had a chance to begin.

“We could always go back to Denali.” Jasper suggested.

“That’s actually a good idea.” Emmett agreed with him. Rosalie glared at him, but he didn’t back down.

“Why?” She asked scornfully. “We can’t stay there for very long, we attract to much attention, remember?” Esme glared at her. “Rosalie, just because you didn’t get what you want, it doesn’t mean you can be rude to everyone else with an idea.” Rosalie looked down.

“I think that’s a good idea, at least until arrangements can be made to move somewhere else. We couldn’t move to our new home right away anyhow, and we would probably end up in Denali anyway. Lets go there until we have a better plan.” Carlisle spoke in a voice that allowed no argument. “Are we packing anything, dear?” Esme asked.

Carlisle shook his head. “To much of a risk. We’re leaving now. Two to a car, so we can take them all.” And then he was running out the door, Esme following close behind.

Edward took my hand, and led me outside too. Once again I was bombarded with scents, and felt my mouth filling up with the venom that I knew would let me feed on the thing that smelled so delicious. Edward saw the look on my face, and squeezed my hand

I was so busy looking into his face that I walked straight into the Volvo. Edward laughed. “I thought that becoming a vampire had cured you of your clumsiness.” I glared at him, but he was too busy laughing at me to notice. I walked around the car with my nose in the air, careful not to trip or something else that would make him laugh more.

“Are you still angry with me?” He asked when we were both in the car and driving away. “Yes.”

“Oh, Bella. I was just joking. You haven’t tripped or anything since you woke up, so I didn’t think it was still a sore spot. Lighten up! At least you walked into the car gracefully.” I shot him another dirty look. Then I sighed. Why couldn’t I stay angry with him?

“I guess I’m not angry anymore.’’ I said reluctantly. He grinned my favorite crooked smile at me, and put his arm around my shoulders.

“Can’t this thing go any faster?”

He stared at me, a stunned expression on his face. “What?” I asked tersely.

“ I thought you hated driving fast.”

“I did. Now I don’t.”

“Well, it’s nice to not have you complaining about my driving for a change.”

I decided to broach the subject of his eyes carefully. “Edward?”

“Yes?” “Would there be a reason for a vampire’s eyes to change color all of the sudden?” He looked puzzled. “What do you mean?”

“Have you looked in a mirror recently?” He glanced up into the rearview mirror.

“ Bella, my eyes are the same color as always.” I shook my head.

“Usually after you go hunting, your eyes are light. Yesterday, they barely changed from black, they just got little specks of gold in them.” Edward sighed.

“Bella, I just didn’t feel like hunting any more yesterday. I’ll go hunting when we get to Denali, and they’ll go back to normal.”

I wasn’t completely satisfied with his answer, but I let the subject drop. It was obvious he didn’t want to talk about it.
