I didn’t think. I just ran. What could be happening? It’s not like there are any humans here. Edward is going to be fine. I could feel Carlisle and Esme right behind me, but I couldn’t slow down. When I got to the door, I stopped so abruptly that Esme ran right into me. Normally I would have giggled, but I was too nervous. I knocked on the door. “Come in.” Called a calm voice. I walked in, and immediately went to Edward. “What happened?” Carlisle asked Aaron. “Edward’s eyes…” I looked into his eyes. They were blood red. Carlisle nodded grimly. “Don’t worry Aaron, we know what’s going on.” Then he looked at me. “I’m assuming that when you figured out what you were doing you let it go?” I nodded. “Take him back to your room. Esme and I will be there in a minute.” Ignoring Edward’s protests, I pulled him to our room. “Edward, I’m so sorry. I didn’t know what I was doing. I could have helped, and I made things worse! What’s wrong with me?”

“Bella! Why on earth are you sorry? I’m the monster who killed a human here! And I didn’t tell anyone, and I lost control…” He was crying. My angel, the one person who could make me feel good in the depths of despair was crying. It made it worse that he couldn’t really cry, it made it seem worse.

I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him tightly against me. “Edward Cullen,” I whispered. “You are not a monster, and if you ever say that you are again I’ll, I’ll…” I didn’t really know what I would do, and he knew that.

Carlisle came in after Edward was calmer, Esme right behind him. “I went and told everyone to come here. They’ll be here shortly.” I nodded, and continued stroking Edward’s hair. Everything would be fine.

All too soon, the rest of the family filed into the room, wearing confused expressions. “What’s going on? Are you Ok Edward?” Alice was the first one to start talking and notice Edward’s expression. “That is what we are here to talk about, actually. Edward, would you like to explain what is going on, or would you like me to?” There was no response, except for him to tighten his grip on me. I looked at Carlisle helplessly, and he began speaking. “I trust you all remember the night that Bella was changed.” Everyone nodded. “And you all remember that Edward left us for a time?”

“I drank from a human.” Edward startled us all by speaking up. He hadn’t moved his head off of my chest, but he was listening to the conversation.

They were all staring at him. “It’s all good, man. We all fall off of the wagon sometimes.” Emmett was the first one to excuse him. “Edward, I’ll be the last one to condemn you for that. I was a fully-fledged monster before I met Alice, remember? And I know how hard it is to resist when you’re angry.” Alice was just staring at him. “Why does it matter now?” Rosalie asked. Edward looked up. Everyone except Carlisle, Esme and me gasped. “You didn’t hunt afterward.” Jasper understood, but the rest of them didn’t. They had never experienced withdrawal. “What does that have to do with anything?” Rosalie asked impatiently. “Withdrawal.” Jasper whispered. “I’m so sorry Edward. You are in for a rough time.” Edward nodded. “I’ve done this before, remember?” “What the Hell are they talking about, Carlisle?” Emmett asked angrily.

“When a vampire is born, they make a choice. They become ‘vegetarians’, like us, or they drink from humans. If a ‘monster’ vampire develops a conscience, and they switch to animal blood, they go through a period of withdrawal, not unlike a human does when they try to stop using drugs. This can be avoided if the vampire drinks from and animal immediately after drinking from a human, which Edward didn’t.” “So, Edward doesn’t want animals anymore?” Rose asked. “ I don’t want to be a monster. I was angry, and this girl was laying in an alleyway bleeding, and I didn’t even think. Afterwards, I forgot about the animal thing, and here we are. Please don’t give up on me.” This was the closest to pleading, real pleading, that I had ever heard Edward, and it hurt to hear him like that. “Never.” I whispered passionately. “Alice nodded, and Carlisle told him, “You are my son. Family never gives up on each other.” Esme nodded vehemently. “Edward, I’ve been through this too. I already told you I don’t have any room to talk.” “Man, I’ve killed my fair share of humans, too. If you hadn’t been around that one time to remind me to hunt, I’d be exactly where you are now.” Rosalie stood silent, but for once, it was a supportive silence. “Edward,” I started, “You are my entire life, my reason for existence. You’ve never given up on me, why would I give up on you?” He met my eyes for the first time that day, and it felt like we were in our own universe. “Bella? Bella!” Alice was trying to get my attention. I pulled myself away from Edward’s eyes, and looked at her. “What?”

“I said, why were you hiding Edward’s eye color from the rest of us?” I looked away.

“It wasn’t her fault, Alice. She was doing it subconsciously. How did you know that was what was going on?” She shrugged. “It was the only thing that made sense.”

“Anyone else have questions?” No one said anything. “Good. Then lets go hunting.” Carlisle said grimly, as if he were expecting something bad to happen. “Bella, why don’t you let Emmett hang on to Edward?” I stiffened, but Edward nodded. “This isn’t going to be pretty.”
