Chapter Three: Explanations

She took a deep breath, her voice gaining strength as she spoke. “Edward…I’m pregnant.”

Her words echoed around the room loud and painful. What had I done...?

Silence. That was the one word to describe the state of the room. And not a sweet, comfortable kind of silence...a shocked and grim silence.

“Edward?” Bella’s sweet and musical voice was choked with tears, her eyes wide and terrified.

I managed to regain my composure first. “Bella…” I stretched my hand out towards her, but let it drop. I had ruined her life…and the life of our child. This couldn’t even happen, but it had. We’d be faced with too many choices…devastating choices. Choices I couldn’t even think about right now.

"Oh, God," I moaned, seizing her hands again. "Bella, you don't have to do this. Its my..." I could almost feel the anger and stupidity seeping through my tone.

Bella put both of her hands on the side of my neck, immediately attuned to my mood and expression. “Edward…this isn’t your fault. I know you’re contemplating right and wrong, but let’s face it. We’re having a baby, and I don’t care if it comes out to be a mutant vampire/human, because it’ll be ours. And that’s all that matters.”

I looked at Bella more closely. She had pulled herself together, and her eyes were blazing with a determined glow. I remembered how when she was younger she’d have to take care of Renee like the adult…making choices she wasn’t supposed to. That’s how she seemed right now, except she was taking care of me…saving me once again.

“Thank you…” I whispered, reaching out for her. As I pulled her into my arms, I couldn’t bear to look straight into her brown eyes.

She didn’t know that the worst was far from over.

The door opened and I tripped out of the room, clutching onto Edward’s arm. We’d talked for a while…just about how Alice had told me. It had taken me a minute to calm him down; he was ready to go “kill” her.

It was time to go tell everyone else.

When we walked into the living room, I saw Alice glance up at us expectantly. I gave her a tiny smile, as if to assure her everything was alright. She hadn’t told Rosalie or Emmett yet.

Emmett looked at us with a lopsided grin, his pale face expectant. I guess he knew we had something to tell them.

I heard Edward take a deep breath, and his fingers gently squeezed mine. “Emmett, Rose…Bella’s pregnant. We're having a ba-baby.” He almost stuttered over the last word, his usually perfect and flowing speech distorted.

I peeked through my hair to see their expressions. Emmett’s mouth was formed in a perfect “o.” Rosalie’s angelic face was completely stiff, her eyes flickering with some emotion I couldn’t read.

Emmett gained his composure first. “How did this happen?” he asked slowly.

I felt my face begin to burn, the red blush creeping up underneath my skin.

Edward sighed. “Well, Emmett, what happens is…”

“Shut up, Edward, you know what I meant!” Emmett growled.

“I don’t know. We’re going to have to talk to Carlisle when he gets back.”

I could basically see the information register on Emmett’s face. Then, a jovial grin spread across his features. “Well that’s great!” He then proceeded to wrap me in a bone-cracking hug.

“Emmett…” I choked.

“Oh, sorry,” he said, releasing me.

I could see Alice as she bounced up and down on the balls of her ballerina feet, but then I looked at Edward. His face was blank as he stared at Rosalie.

I hesitantly turned towards her. “Rosalie?”

Her eyes blazed and she glared at me with a fiery hatred. “Why is it that you get both?” With that, she fluidly rose from the sofa and streaked out the back door.

Emmett was rooted to the spot, his face apologetic. “Rose!” he called, following her out the door.

I sank down onto the sofa and buried my head in my hands. I knew what she’d meant…our conversation a few months ago…how she’d always wanted a little baby and a man to grow old with. That’s what I was getting…

If things worked out the way I’d planned.

I felt Edward’s cold arms wrap around me as he breathed gently into my hair. “Ignore her, Bella,” he whispered.

“She’ll come around,” I heard Alice’s soothing voice say in my other ear.

I nodded and hoped that they were right.

Edward and I stood in front of Carlisle’s study door. They had returned from hunting a few hours ago…I’d managed to choke out the words to Esme and Jasper. Jasper was skeptical, amazed that this could even happen. Esme was naturally overjoyed…not even questioning us. She and Alice were already brainstorming nursery colors. Apparently Edward had told Carlisle, I hadn’t had a chance to see his reaction, though.

Now it was time to talk to Carlisle.

I felt Edward rub circles on the palm of my hand, his face blank. As if he was bracing for an onslaught of some sort. I could feel myself fidgeting, my toes squirming inside my shoes. He lifted his pale fingers and gently knocked twice.

“Come in,” Carlisle said evenly.

We walked in and Carlisle glanced up. He gently clipped some papers together and gestured towards two chairs in front of his desk.

He gave a small smile. “I believe congratulations are in order?” he asked.

Edward nodded slightly, his face still impassive. I fell into the chair and stared at Carlisle’s angelic face.

“Well…as you can probably tell, this is a most unusual case. Vampires aren’t supposed to be able to have children,” he gave us a slight smile, “Anyway, I don’t believe it’s ever happened, but it is possible for a human and a vampire to have a child. Possibly…” he trailed off, this face suddenly thoughtful.

Edward’s face still hadn’t softened. “How could this happen, Carlisle?”

My eyes flickered towards Edward’s instinctively, something wasn’t right…

Carlisle sighed. “You body does not produce fluids, Edward. Hence the absence of blood, saliva...only venom. As of your human time, you were a virgin...so, I assume they have been 'stored up.' If you'll forgive the less then eloquent term. Also, sperm need a cold environment. And your body temperature is colder than most…”

Oh, great. I felt the blush creeping up again…this was embarrassing. I saw Edward’s eyes flicker towards mine. Did I detect the barest hint of a smirk…?

Carlisle cleared this throat again. “Bella…what’s your plan?”

I blinked. “Um…m-my plan?”

Carlisle nodded patiently, folding his hands across the desk. “Yes…for having the baby and such.”

I looked expectantly towards Edward, whose face was turned away from mine. “Um…I’ll just be changed and then have the baby…” I stopped my mumbling as I regarded Carlisle’s face. “W-what?” I asked shakily. I looked at Edward, whose face was still turned.

“Bella…you can’t be changed while you're pregnant. If you are, the baby will die and you’ll be frozen just as you are forever.”

Horrified, I looked at Edward. He turned towards me, his golden eyes filled with pain. I could feel my mouth hanging open, thoughts racing through my head. What could I do…? I wanted to keep our baby safe… that was my main priority. I had thought I’d be changed, have the baby and be Super-Mom.

Then I could keep everyone out of harms way, not let Renee and Charlie think they had lost a daughter and a grandchild. Now…what would I do? Another eight or so months…plenty of time for the Volturi to pay another visit. I shuddered as I thought of Jane’s torture of Bree…her small and childlike face danced before my eyes, menacing and terrifying. She could torture Edward again!

“Bella…” I felt Edward’s cold fingers on my hand. I hadn’t realized it, but my fingers were clenching the arm rest so hard my knuckles had turned white. He gently pried them off and effortlessly lifted me onto his lap. Carlisle had left us alone.

“Edward…” I choked.

“Oh, Bella. I’m so sorry…” his sweet breath blew onto my face, and I felt like I was going into hysterics.

“What if something happens?” I blubbered, “What if…?

“Shh…it’s going to be alright, Bella. Nothing’s going to happen in eight months. Victoria is dead, she can’t harm you anymore.”

“The Volturi…”

“Are not going to come,” he said firmly.

I believed him.

I gazed into his flickering topaz eyes as he pressed his lips against my neck. I put my head on his shoulder so he couldn’t see my face. I was feeling so many things right now... Not even Edward’s touch could calm me, but I knew what could.

I needed to talk to my best friend. I needed to talk to Jacob. And that’s what I was going to do.
