Chapter Eight: Captives

My heart pounded inside my chest as we streaked through the grocery store. The empty cart of food lay abandoned behind us, and the fluorescent lights seared into my consciousness. Edward’s grip tightened on my arm and his face was a mask as we ran towards the silver Volvo in the parking lot. He threw me gently in the front seat and the car started in a matter of seconds.

“W-where are we going?” I asked shakily, my voice cracking.

With a sharp turn, Edward veered off the main road…the car’s engine a distant roar. “The house,” he said tightly, “Alice had a vision that he was heading that way, so they’re trying to intercept him right now.”

Autumn leaves floated lazily through the air in the Volvo’s wake, making my eyes flash with brilliant patterns. “Who is he?” I asked, my voice surprisingly calm.

Edward didn’t answer, but his fingers tightened on the steering wheel.

“Edward!” I commanded sharply.

“He’s a tracker, Bella.” His voice was low, toneless.

I shuddered, remembering James. “For who…or what?”

“The Volturi.”

The silence hung between us like a dark cloud, festering into horror. “The Volturi?” I repeated.

Edward nodded and I felt the car speed up. “He’s “checking in”…to see if you’ve been changed yet. But it can’t be…” He trailed off, his velvety voice still expressionless.

“But I can’t be changed…then the baby will die!” my voice sounded more like a wail.

“No!” Edward said sharply, causing me to flinch in surprise. The car not even detouring an inch, Edward leaned over and put a hand on the side of my face. “We can’t, under any circumstances, let him or the Volturi know you are with child!”

Normally, I would have snickered at Edward’s choice of words, but the tone of his voice scared me. “Why not?” I queried.

“Because, the whole balance would be overthrown. What would happen if a pale, little child was walking down the street with a father young enough to be her brother…a mother her sister? We’ll be living a lie, Bella. People will become suspicious…and that’s exactly what the Volturi don’t want.”

“What would happen if they found out?” I asked softly.

Edward sucked in his breath, removing the hand from my face. “They would kill us.”

Four little words could cause that much pain in my heart…Edward and our child, dead. I didn’t really care about myself…the idea of my own death wasn’t exactly new. They could kill the rest of the Cullens too! What would stop them…? Would Jake go after them for revenge…no he couldn’t! A pack of impulsive werewolves would be no problem…It took me a minute to realize I was crying.

Edward saw. “Oh, Bella, I’m so sorry…I didn’t mean to upset you.” His voice was full of unmasked pain as he reached a hand out.

Angrily, I wiped the tears away and took a deep breath…we had reached the Cullen house. Edward pulled cautiously into the drive and turned off the car. We got out slowly and he let his hands drop to his side, his face completely blank…listening to the family and tracker’s thoughts. His eyes flew open and a loud, guttural snarl ripped through his chest.

“Damn it, no!” he cried. He turned around and pushed me up against the car, his arms spread in front of me…attack-like stance…

“Hello, Edward…Bella,” a deep, chilling voice said from the shadows.

Instantly, a lithe and powerful figure stood in front of us. I sucked in my breath and shrank into Edward’s side…the tracker. He was not like the other Volturi I had encountered…he seemed to lack the refined eloquence they all possessed. He was tall, slightly shorter than Edward with curly, chestnut locks. His eyes were a flickering golden…the irises tinged with red…

“Alexander,” Edward’s voice was low, controlled…deadly calm.

Alexander gave a short and musical laugh, which didn’t fit in with his appearance. “Ahh…I’m sorry to have thwarted you. Jane warned me of your ability to read minds…so I became quite good at blocking you out, or fooling you,” Another bone-chilling laugh. “You had no idea it was me, did you?”

“None in the least,” said Edward, almost cordially. Why was he being so calm…Alexander as well. Where were the Cullens?

“I was sent here to check up on you, to see if your little human was one of us yet.”

Edward shifted ever so slightly, so I was hidden from view. “Well, you can tell Aro that she will be one soon. The date has already been set.”

“Really?”

I cringed.

“Yes,” Edward said blandly.

Alexander stared at Edward critically for a moment, as if he were reading Edward’s very soul. Suddenly, his face changed from entertained, to shocked, to blood-thirsty. “So, that’s it! The mortal’s with child…you have no idea what you’ve done!” he roared.

My breath caught in my throat…how could he tell? Edward stiffened and Alexander closed his eyes, lips moving soundlessly.

“No!” Edward snarled, hurling himself towards Alexander.

“Edward!” I screamed, my voice mingling with Carlisle’s.

“Edward, don’t…!”

“Bella!” Alice was at my side in an instant, spinning me around…my face turned.

I realized why she was doing this as I heard the vicious snarls behind me…mounting to a boiling crescendo of hate. Snarls echoed throughout the air like gunshots, and then there was a high-pitched shriek…sickening snaps…silence.

I was frozen with fear…I couldn’t move. Alice was as still as a statue.

“Edward, get some matches and gasoline.” Carlisle’s voice…impassive and calm.

Alexander was dead. Edward had killed him. The Volturi’s prized tracker was gone…we weren’t safe anymore.
