Chapter Nine: Fear

I watched the golden flames leap higher and higher in the clearing. With fiery claws, they extended upwards towards the heavens…as if Alexander’s last remains were fighting to come back. An involuntary shiver coursed through me, despite the heat. I wrapped my arms around myself and watched Edward’s still figure. His back was turned to me, head bent deep in thought. Hesitantly, I walked forwards until I was right next to him. Silence hung between us and the flames flickered in Edward’s own topaz eyes.

“I didn’t want this, Bella,” he said softly.

“What?” I asked…not sure of his exact meaning.

“This,” he gestured towards the fire, “I didn’t want to kill him…I was hoping he’d leave with a warning, but he was going to tell them. That’s what he was doing…telling the Volturi you were with child when his lips were moving.”

“Did he get through to them?”

Edward snatched a twig off the ground and hurled it into the flames. “I don’t know, Bella.”

“It wouldn’t matter anyway,” Alice said, suddenly at my side, “Edward, the Volturi probably already know that their prized tracker is dead. They’ll be coming for us soon.”

“Would you see them coming?” I asked hopefully.

Alice gave a fleeting smile. “I’ll know, Bella,” she said in an attempt at being reassuring.

I sighed and pushed the hair away from my face. “I’m so sorry. This is all my fault.”

Edward looked at me sharply. “How could this possibly be your fault, Bella?”

“They saw me in Volterra…”

“And you were saving me,” Edward prompted.

“And now, I’m having this baby and putting the family in even more danger…”

“It takes two to play that game,” Edward said shortly.

I blushed.

Suddenly, I saw the rest of the family coming from the house…impassive expressions on their faces. Esme walked up and placed a light hand on Edward’s arm, a mother’s gentle touch. She gave a soft smile and touched my cheek, regarding me sadly. Jasper stood next to Alice and she leaned into him for support.

Carlisle put his arm around Esme’s shoulders and calmly began: “I just called Emmett and Rose…they’re on their way home.”

Edward nodded in compliance, his face still full of suffering.

“Edward, you did the right thing. You had to…or else he would’ve killed Bella,” Jasper said evenly…I could feel calm drenching the area in waves.

“That’s right,” Alice added.

Edward gently pulled me into his arms and rested his chin on the top of my head. I gave him a soft smile, one that I meant to be encouraging.

“I talked to their pack leader…” Carlisle began.

“Sam?” I asked, turning around sharply.

Carlisle nodded. “They’re on their way.”

Jasper and Alice stiffened…Edward seemed too lost in thought. I swallowed; I didn’t want the pack involved…even though they had a right to know when blood-thirsty vampires came looking for revenge in their territory.

I heard a dry, toneless laugh come from Edward. I looked up, puzzled. “Jacob’s almost here…he’s worried that I let you get hurt.”

I hugged Edward’s marble body tighter…Edward was always the one saving me. I still hadn’t forgotten Jacob’s actions at Charlie’s disastrous dinner party…

“Bella?!” I heard the familiar, husky voice call.

Edward hesitantly let me go so Jake could give me a crushing hug. “I’m fine, Jake. Edward killed him.”

Jake let go of me and eyed Edward closely…giving him the tiniest nod of acknowledgement. As Jake turned away, Edward gave a small, satisfied smirk. When would they stop antagonizing each other? I saw large shadows emerge cautiously from the fringe of trees, their fur glistening from the flames. The pack…Sam, I could tell, at their head. Carlisle walked over to greet them, gesturing to Edward.

“Bella…” he began, looking at me hesitantly.

“Go...I’ll be fine,” I said softly, giving him a kiss on the cheek.

He fluidly walked over to join his father, to act as the pack’s translator. Esme, Alice and Jasper had silently blended into the night…silent observers. Jake and I were alone. I turned back to Jake who was sitting on a small log, shaking his hair in a very wolf-like action.

I sat down heavily next to him. “Did you run here?”

“How else?” he asked softly, his bare chest flickering in the firelight.

“Right,” I said stupidly. He seemed moody again, probably still angry about our last encounter.

“Damn, Bells. More leeches after you again?”

I didn’t reply, angrily clawing at the uncomfortable sweatshirt I was wearing…it was too hot. “Shouldn’t you be over there with the rest of the pack?” I snapped, feeling rather unforgiving and stressed.

Jake shook his head. “They’ll fill me in later.”

I nodded sullenly, shuddering as I imagined Alexander’s flaming eyes…

“Are you going to take that sweatshirt off? It’s like four hundred degrees between me and the fire.”

I narrowed my eyes and unconsciously took it off…throwing it to the side. Jake sighed and looked at my face, then they dropped down to my slightly swollen stomach…

Oh, crap! No, no, no! I’d forgotten! I grabbed wildly at the sweatshirt again, but it was too late.

His dark eyes seemed to have expanded, too small for all the emotions raging through them. “You’re…you’re…” he couldn’t even find the words.

“Jake, I…” I choked on the words, since they were becoming clogged with tears.

“I’m an idiot...” he growled, rising and streaking into the forest.

“Jake!” I screamed, running after him.

I was such a jerk, it wasn’t supposed to happen this way! I found him in the small clearing by the house; he hadn’t gotten far. He was hunched over, hands on knees...tremors ripping violently through his body. I tottered forwards, only to feel iron arms wrap around my waist.

“No!” Edward snarled, pulling me back, “he’s hurt, Bella…he could lose control!”

I struggled, talking incoherently, but Edward’s arms were vises.

Suddenly, Jake’s head whipped around, his face covered in sweat…he was fighting so hard. “You see, bloodsucker, that’s where you and I are different. I wouldn’t hurt her, no matter how she hurt me…but you’ve given her the greatest hurt of all.”

With that, there was an explosion of clothes and changing muscles, and I was left staring into the eyes of a large, reddish wolf. Then he was gone, swerving into the darkening forest…back to La Push.

Then I dissolved into a pathetic flurry of tears, sobbing into Edward’s cold chest.
