Prologue

I ran with my treasure in clutched in my arms. I ran with all of my might, pushing my legs as hard as I could. Suddenly, the hunter was standing in front of me. My clumsiness made me trip over a stone. As I thumped to the floor, my treasure skidded out of my arms.

Plan

Elizabeth Renee Cullen lay sleeping in my arms. I looked on in wonder at the tiny child.

Elizabeth was not like most babies. She was as hard as marble, with features that were inhumanly beautiful. When her eyes were open, they were the color of warm butterscotch. This was probably due to the fact that her father was a vampire.

Elizabeth was similar to human babies in other ways, though. Ways such as her diet. She drank milk, not blood. She aged like a normal child and could produce tears, blood, and other such, um, bodily fluids. She was also quite warm, unlike her father. This was probably due to the fact that her mother, me, was a perfectly normal human.

This baby was the reason that I was still human and not a vampire myself. Every time I thought about being changed into a vampire, and saw the child, I simply couldn't draw myself to make the choice. Edward and my best friend, Jacob Black, were perfectly happy with this.

Right now, this baby was the center our whole family's world. Both Edward's and my family doted on the child. The Cullen's and my parents spoiled her endlessly with presents, love, and kisses.

Elizabeth appeared to love the attention, much to Alice's satisfaction. I knew that Alice couldn't wait for the little girl to get older so she could play guinea pig Barbie with her. I was thankful for this, seeing as I hated Alice to give me makeovers.

Tonight the whole family was coming over, minus my mom and her new husband, Phil, since they lived in Jacksonville.

I was pulled out of my train of thought by a cold touch on my shoulder. I turned around, already knowing who it was. His face was pulled up into a crooked smile that still left me breathless.

"Hi," I breathed, leaning up towards him. He leaned in the rest of the way, pressing his cool lips against mine. I kept my arms firmly down and forced myself to keep in control of the sudden rush of boiling blood I felt.

The kiss ended all too soon as Edward pulled away, still smiling.

"So, are you ready for the company, darling?" he asked, impersonating a British accent perfectly.

"Why, yes, my dear. I've been preparing all day. I was in quite an Alice-worthy rush. You should have seen. You would be quite proud of me," I replied, also using a British accent, though not as perfectly.

"I'm always proud of you," he grinned, slipping back into his American accent.

I grinned in response. From my arms, Elizabeth moaned. We both looked down to see her butterscotch eyes opening slowly and her mouth stretching into a yawn.

"And how has little Lizzie been today?" he laughed.

"Quite good, all things considered. She hardly ever cries. It's quite unnatural, but that's hardly a surprise."

We both laughed, Lizzie joining in, her laugh like a silver bell.

We were interrupted by the chime of the doorbell. I looked at Edward with a question in my eyes.

"It's Alice and Jasper," he explained.

"Why did they ring the doorbell?"

"Just in case Charlie was here, probably," he replied. "Come on in," he called softly. I knew they could hear because, next thing I knew, they were in the room with us.

"Where's my favorite niece?" Alice exclaimed.

"She's your only niece, Alice!" I laughed, handing Elizabeth to Alice. She took the baby and tenderly held her in her arms, her eyes full of adoration.

Jasper seemed halfway through taking a step back, torn between trying to resist her blood and wanting to admire the baby.

We were soon joined by Esme and Carlisle, who came bearing gifts. They handed it to me and I handed it to Edward, not particularly wanting to open it. He pulled the paper off in one quick movement and opened the box, revealing a beautiful silver rattle that he gave to Lizzie.

Lizzie took it. When she shook it, a delighted smile crossed her face at the sound it produced. Everyone fell under the power of the child's smile, tilting their heads to the side and smiling.

"Why look at that! It's little Lizzie!" Emmett's booming voice filled the room. We turned to see him enter with Rosalie at her side. "Let me have her, Alice!"

"I'm not done holding her, Emmett!"

"You always hog her! It's not fair!"

"Stop whining, Emmett!"

Edward and I snickered as the two argued over the baby.

"Alice, let Emmett hold Lizzie," Edward commanded.

Alice handed the child over grudgingly, muttering the whole time.

Emmett took the baby and held her in his large hands. Then, without warning, he threw the baby into the air. Lizzie giggled delightedly.

"Emmett! Be careful!" I exclaimed.

"Calm down, Bella! I wouldn't hurt her for the life of me! You're such a worrywart!" Emmett laughed.

I was stopped from further argument by the sound of the doorbell. I walked down the hall to let Charlie in.

"Where's my favorite granddaughter?" he cried.

"Everyone's got to stop doing that! This is the only child in the whole family!"

We entered the living room where everyone was doting on a delighted Lizzie. Charlie held his arms out and Emmett handed her to him. The crowd moved to form a circle around Charlie.

For the rest of the night, Lizzie traded hands. Everyone watched her and talked to each other. Charlie was the first to leave.

That left the vampires and me. We all continued talking about anything. Rosalie and Alice talked about a recent shopping trip they had taken to Paris. Carlisle and Edward talked about cars. Jasper and Emmett talked about a recent wrestling match they had fought. Esme and I talked about mothering while Lizzie drifted off in my arms.

"What do you do whenever...?" I trailed off, realizing that the room had become silent. I followed everyone's eyes to Alice, who was sitting completely stiff in her chair, her eyes blank and staring straight ahead.

My breath caught in my throat. Alice blinked and shook her head. Edward swiftly moved to my side before the others could ask Alice what she had seen. He put his arm around my waist and pulled me closer.

"We have to go," he whispered.

"What? Why?" I asked, completely bewildered. "Alice, what did you see?"

"The Volturi. They're coming. They're coming for Bella."

There was a collective intake of breath from everyone. My eyes grew wide with fear. I looked at the child in my arms.

"Where are we going to go?"

"Far. Far away."

"Are they bringing Demetri?"

"Yes."

"You can't go with me, then. I'll take the baby and I'll go."

"I can't do that."

"Edward, it's the only way. If you're with me, then they'll find us using your thoughts. I'll pack quickly, take some money, and catch a plane."

"Where?"

"Anywhere. Edward, you have to see that this is the only way they won't find us."

"I don't know."

"Edward, you should listen to her. She's right, you know," Alice interjected.

"Yeah, Edward," the rest of his family agreed.

I turned on him, my eyes pleading with him.

"Please," I begged. "Please. For me, for Lizzie."

His eyes were full of agony and indecision, but my pleading seemed to have an affect on him.

"Okay, but you have to go tonight. You'll take a plane to one place, but get off when it stops on the way and get on another plane somewhere else."

I nodded, thinking his plan was sensible.

"What about us?" Emmett asked, flexing his muscles.

I opened my mouth to tell him that he was just going to stay put and do nothing, but Edward spoke before I could.

"You stay here and wait for the Volturi. When they get here, you'll take them down."

Emmett looked pleased at the thought, while Rosalie cringed. I thought about asking him not to fight, but Edward whisked me up the stairs, and to our room.

He pulled out my bag and began stuffing it with clothes. I went to help him, but he was already zipping it up.

He slung it over his shoulder, handed me a credit card, picked me up, and flew me downstairs.

"Alice, we need your Turbo," Edward said. Alice walked to the door and held it open.

"Just give me the keys, Alice," Edward growled. Alice grinned impishly.

"No way. I'm going with you to the airport."

I thought about that. If she came, then she might not be here when the Volturi arrive.

"Let her come, Edward," I said.

"Fine," he sighed in defeat. I turned to say goodbye to the Cullens.

Esme gave me a hug and a peck in the cheek.

"Be careful," she murmured.

"No, you be careful."

Jasper turned on me.

"Everything will be fine, Bella. Don't worry about us. We took on a whole army of newborns. We can handle the Volturi."

"Yeah, Bella. Don't worry about us," Emmett said, sweeping me into a huge bear hug.

"Can't-breathe-Emmett."

"Sorry," he laughed, releasing me.

Carlisle stepped forward and briefly hugged me. I turned to Rosalie, casting my eyes down, not quite knowing what to say.

Suddenly, there was a pair of arms around me. I looked up, my eyes full of surprise when I realized that Rosalie was hugging me. Rosalie.

She kissed my cheek.

"Think before you act," she whispered in my ear.

I nodded. Then Edward wrapped his arm around my waist and led me out the door, the tears beginning to stream down my face, soaking Elizabeth's blanket.
