Chapter 4 BPOV

I couldn’t believe what he was telling me. I could tell he was serious. He was either a really good actor or he was telling the truth. Was it really so farfetched to believe he was a vampire, when I just asked if he was an angel? Yes it was.

“If you’re a vampire how can you be out in daylight?” My voice, I’m sure, was dripping with sarcasm.

“You have only seen me in the day time Bella not daylight. We live in forks Washington. How often have you seen the sun since you have been here?”

He was right. Now that he mentioned it, I realized he was right. I had never seen him or his family in the pure light of day. Of course I hadn’t seen anything else either. Forks, Washington was a rather sunless place, but that still didn’t answer my question.

“So you are telling me that you will melt in the sun or turn into ashes or something like that?” I said angrily.

If he was unwilling to tell me the truth he had at least be able to come up with a better story than this.

“I never said that” He answered quietly, looking down.

“Well isn’t that what happens in all the books and movies?” I retorted.

“Hollywood is hardly the most accurate source of information.” He chuckled to himself.

“I suppose you are then being a vampire and all” I replied, becoming angrier still.

Anger was my biggest weakness. I had this bad habit of starting to cry when I was angry and could feel the tears starting to form. He must have sensed they were on their way.

“I promise I am not lying to you Bella.” He said quickly.

He reached out, looking up once more, to grab my hand but stopped short, letting his fall back to his side.

“Then where are your fangs and shouldn’t you be eating me or something?” I joked half seriously trying to keep the tears from falling.

He stared at me for a long moment. He was dazzling me again. His face was inching slowly towards mine. I was so lost in his amber eyes that I was startled when he started speaking again.

“To answer your first question you said yourself that I was …Impenetrable I believe was the word you used.” He said reaching up slowly tucking a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

“Do you really think I would need to have fangs to pierce flesh? Even a small child can draw blood if they bite hard enough. I can bite harder than a child.” He continued moving the same hand to cup my jaw.

“As for your second question, Maybe but I really don’t want to.” He finished our lips a fraction of an inch apart.

Right then It all clicked. He had said he was dangerous and he had meant it. He had meant everything. I had just refused to see it before. I felt the need to close the gap between our lips, even knowing what he was. Even knowing if this was the last thing I ever did. I was sure this wasn’t the worst possible way to go.

“How can you do it?” I said, not knowing myself where the question had come from.

“Do what exactly?” he answered with a question, eyes still smoldering.

“How do you kill people?” I asked trembling now.

“I don’t…We don’t.” He said taking a step back and letting his hand fall again.

He looked ashamed by the question.

“Isn’t the blood…drinking…thing…the defining part of being a vampire though?” I questioned hesitantly not wishing to upset him further.

“We drink blood… just not human blood.” He replied, staring at me intently again.

“Oh” I responded.

“We found that we can survive off animal’s blood than human.” He continued hesitantly gauging my reaction.

“Why would you do that?” I wondered aloud.

“We don’t want to be monsters Bella.” He said looking slightly affronted.

I felt mollified by his reply and obvious hatred toward the idea of drinking human blood.

“Bella I…” he paused “Bella I think it would be best if you went home and forgot this whole thing ever happened.” He finished almost angrily.

“Why?” I didn’t understand. “Edward, I don’t think it’s possible to forget what I know.” I answered still puzzled and slightly hurt by his sudden change of attitude.

“Bella it is dangerous for you to know what you do. You have kept your word and kept my secret thus far. Bella please do this for me.” He Begged.

“This is the most dangerous secret anyone could possibly ever have. This not only dangerous for you, it is for your family and friends as well. Our kind does not allow humans to live long that have the knowledge you do. For as long as you live you must promise to keep this to yourself.” He finished gravely.

I was seized suddenly with terror at the thought of someone hurting Charlie because of me.

“Will your family try to hurt them because I know?” I asked stepping back, finally afraid.

He looked like he had wilted as I stepped back. I could tell he felt bad thinking I was afraid of him. Although I knew that I should be It wasn’t him I was afraid of. I was afraid for my family and friends more than anything else. However he continued before I could tell him this.

“No they won’t. We are leaving, so as long as you keep it a secret you will never have to worry about them.” He answered looking depressed.

“You’re leaving? As in, leaving Forks? Because of me?” Edward you don’t have to leave I won’t ever tell anyone. You said yourself I can keep a secret.” I cried.

I was torn. I wanted my new friends and my family to be safe. I also didn’t want Edward and his family to have to leave. Although I knew this Grecian god wasn’t meant for me, I knew I would miss his presence the most of all. There had to be some sort of compromise some way I could fix this.

“It is not your fault. It is mine.” He said, looking slightly confused.

“I would feel horrible if your family uprooted themselves and moved away because of me. I can tell them…” What could I tell them really? “I mean, I will talk to them.” I finished somewhat lamely.

“No. I don’t think that that would be a good idea.” He said resolutely.

She stepped back away from me. I could see the fear in her eyes. I knew she would eventually see the monster that I am. I am just glad she didn’t run away from me screaming the way she ought to have. That would have torn me apart in a way that time couldn’t even heal.

“No they won’t. We are leaving, so as long as you keep it a secret you will never have to worry about them.” I said still feeling like a monster.

“You’re leaving? As in, leaving Forks? Because of me?” Edward you don’t have to leave I won’t ever tell anyone. You said yourself I can keep a secret.” she cried.

I didn’t understand. Having been able to read peoples thoughts for the last hundred year or so must have made me complacent in the feeling that I understood the inner working of the human mind, because Bella Swan never ceased to amaze me.

She should be happy we were leaving. Leaving meant she was safe along with all of those she cared about. How could she want us to stay? We are nightmares come true. Why would she want us around?

“It is not your fault. It is mine.” I said, still slightly confused.

“I would feel horrible if your family uprooted themselves and moved away because of me. I can tell them…I mean, I will talk to them.” She offered.

With the mood Rosalie had been in when I had left, I didn’t need Alice’s visions to tell me that route would not end well for Bella.

“No. I don’t think that that would be a good idea.” I said finished harshly.

Having been so caught up in the mystery that is Bella, I hadn’t noticed her approach.

“Alice” I growled.
