10. Window To Your Soul Part Three

February 22nd, 2003

It had been two days since the accident. Two long, painful days. I was still in the hospital, just in case any of my gashes on my face opened up and needed restitching. My parents were constantly by my side, and Leah came for hours at a time, just like Jared. Paul had come 7 times already, each time he came he would get an annoying call from Casey and would have to leave, and to my surprise, the Cullens had come, too. The father, Dr. Carlisle Cullen, would inspect my cuts for me. I was very grateful.

And, yet, no one knew where Sam was. It was unexpected, but I felt upset. It was like his presence affected my well-being. No one knew that Sam had been there with me, and I was trying to keep it that way. Still, I felt like somehow Uncle Harry knew something that no one else did.

The worst part about it all, that had me sending everyone away so I could sob helplessly, was the fact that my face was marred. The cuts were too deep of wounds to heal fully, and I would always have scars running down the side of my face. I felt so damaged. No one could ever love someone with huge deep scars running down their face. I had never felt so hideous. The first time I looked at my face in the mirror, I broke into sobs. My one eye drooped down, as did my mouth. I had never felt like beauty was important, but I wished I could be back in the days where I had my beautiful, clear face that made people stare at me a second longer than necessary. Well, they would still stare a second longer, but not because I was radiating beauty. Because I was radiating ugliness.

I thanked Emmett repeatedly when I found out he was the one who came and got me. How his family fought off the vicious wolf, I'll never know. All I knew was that I would always be in debt to the Cullens and their kindness.

But, today, I was exceptionally happy. I was finally going home.

***

We needed to find Sam. He could be anywhere and he was unstable. Dangerous to everyone around him. I felt a pang of guilt when I thought of my niece's scarred face. She didn't deserve to be wounded so badly. No one did. I heard a familiar sound of wheels rolling towards me and lifted my head.

"What are we gonna do about that kid, Harry?" Billy asked while looking pained out the window.

"I don't know, Billy. I just don't know." He nodded in response.

"We have to talk to those leeches, though. I don't care what anyone says. They need to know that what is our business is exactly that. Our business. They had no right to come here and fight Sam." I was shocked. He couldn't mean what I thought he meant, could he?

"I must say that, yes, I didn't appreciate them barging in. But if they didn't my niece would be dead! Dead, Billy! I refuse to hate them for coming here. I hate to admit this, but I am in debt to them. I don't know what I would do if, well, if she died." I shook my head repeatedly. Being marred was enough for someone, but death was another.

"Now, you know I didn't mean it like that, Harry. I'm just saying, they need to know when to come and when not to come," he added in a gruff voice as he rolled his way to Jacob's room, "How long do you think before the others phase?" He stopped in front of the doorway, peeking in the room to see Jacob's sleeping form.

"Personally, it shouldn't be too long." My voice was laced with regret. Billy nodded tensely before looking back at me.

"Needless to say, we still need to talk to those leeches."

***

We needed to talk to those Poms. They needed to get their act together. They can't just have their own pack members running around and nearly killing innocents. It was wrong. I also felt like we should talk to Emily. I knew it was against the rules to tell humans what we were, but this was an emergency. This was for her own self-defense. She needed to know how much of a threat Sam was.

I walked down the stairs, three at a time, and saw my family crowded in the living room.

"I need to talk to you. Now, I know a lot of you are going to think this is a bad idea, but I think it needs to be done." I looked back to see their reactions. Carlisle nodded in reassurance.

"Go ahead, Emmett," Carlisle smiled at me while I nodded.

"I think we need to tell Emily what we are and what happened to her. She's confused at why Sam disappeared and then a wolf appeared, I don't need Jasper's power to know that. She needs to know what she's up against and for self defense reasons. Who's with me?" Every one had different reactions. Carlisle had a thoughtful expression, Esme smiled lightly at me, Rosalie stared icily towards me with an outraged expressions, Edward nodded his head, Jasper looked unsure while he gazed at Alice for her opinion, while Alice bounced lightly while shaking her head.

"How can you be so stupid, Emmett? Why would we ever do that? So she can tell the whole damn reservation? Plus, it's against the rules!" Rosalie was stomping around the room. I hated making her angry.

"I think it's a terrific idea!" Alice squealed while Jasper made up his mind. He nodded his head tensely. We all looked towards Carlisle who was looking out the window.

"Well, this is a difficult topic. It could have different consequences either way. If we don't, she can anger Sam and he could attack her. If we do, she can stay away from him, but spill our secret. It could turn badly either way. But, I think it would be best to tell her," the room exploded into a stream of profanities from Rosalie, "because that way she will be safe. If she tells, not too many people will believe her. Plus, we can always move if she does."

Alice unexpectedly jumped up at this and started screaming, "No! No! We can not move! Not until it happens! No! We need to stay! At least for Edward's sake! I mean, she isn't here yet! I refuse to leave this town until she comes! I refuse to give up her friendship when I haven't even gotten it yet! No!" We all stared at her, too shocked for words. Jasper tugged her arm and got her to calm down. She was glaring all around.

"Alice, would you care to explain who this 'she' is you're talking about? And what does this have to do with Edward?" Carlisle had a truly perplexed face on. Then, Alice finally understood what she said. Her eyes got huge as she gasped.

"Oh, uh, nothing. Nope, nothing going on." She gulped and looked anywhere but our faces. Edward's brow was furrowed as he tried to dig into her mind.

"Well, regardless, I'm going to tell her. Who's coming with me?" Rosalie, to my dismay, stalked out of the room. I looked around, waiting for anyone to volunteer. Alice looked unsure as Jasper shook his head in a clear 'no' gesture.

"I'll come." I looked over in shock to see Edward walking towards me. Alice stood up and came over too.

"Alice, no. Please don't," Jasper plead. Alice gave him a small smile and shook her head.

"Sorry, love, but this will add to the future. I need it to happen." Jasper sighed as Edward, Alice and I ran out of the house and towards Emily's house.

***

I was laying in bed when I heard the doorbell ring. Marley barked loudly as I heard my mother sigh loudly and go to open the door. Then, she gasped.

"Oh, well, uh, this sure is a surprise. Um, would you like to come in?" Her voice was breathless and I only heard her shut the door behind whoever came in the house. Then, there were whispers. "Oh, yes, her room is just up the stairs and second door to the right." My brow furrowed. Who would be coming to visit and not know where my room was? And why was my mother so flustered?

I heard soft voices and the stairs creaking a tiny bit. There was more than one person. They stopped in front of my room and I heard someone talking.

"This is it, right?" Someone asked in an unfamiliar high voice. Then, someone, who sounded like a man, grunted in response. Then, the door opened up to reveal three of the Cullens. I almost laughed out loud at the strangeness of it all.

"Uh, hello?" I looked towards them with confusion written clearly across my face. Edward chuckled as Emmett and the pixie-like girl came forward.

"Hey, Emily! Now, I hate to come here and announce some really crappy news but," the girl jumped up and smacked his head," what was that for?" His face was full of outrage. The girl giggled childishly as she wore an expression of innocence.

"For being blunt, Emmett." She smiled, showing perfect white teeth. Edward rolled his eyes and shoved them back as he came forward.

"I'm sorry for the rudeness of my siblings. They can be very...strange sometimes. Anyway, this is my sister Alice." Alice laughed a tinkling sound like bells and came forward and sat on my bed. Her outward behavior surprised me.

"Hello, Emily. It's nice to meet you." Her eyes shown with excitement.

'You too," I mumbled back. Then, Edward started talking again.

"What Emmett was trying to say is that we need to talk to you about something very serious." I nodded as Emmett came and sat on the floor next to my bed. A smile grew across my face as I thought of how childish he could be.

"I'll do this part, Edward," Edward sighed loudly and rolled his eyes as he sat down in my rocking chair, "See, this will be hard to understand but we feel you need to know for your safety. Well, here goes nothing. My family, Edward and Alice included, aren't human." He looked to me, waiting for my reaction. I just sat there, frozen in shock, and stared towards Emmett. What did he mean? Not human? Then, with a gasp I realized what he was talking about. They were vampires after all!

Edward looked at me shocked. "How did you know?" Huh? Wait. Oh my God. I was putting all the pieces together. He was that one! That one Sam was talking about! Edward kept getting more shocked and confused. I ignored the bewildered looks Alice and Emmett were giving the two of us. My mind was still racing with the new realization. Edward was the one with the power, or whatever they thought he had. My jaw dropped as I stared at him. Could he possibly be reading my mind now?

"Would someone please explain why Emily is staring at Edward like he's some guy with eight heads and a blue nose!" That got my attention. Alice burst into a fit of giggles as Edward continued to looked awestruck.

"She knows. She knows what we are and what I do." Alice stopped giggling and stared at me with a shocked expression.

"How do you know?" She got on her knees and and scooted closer.

"Um, well, there's these legends. Sam used to tell them. They told of a family a few decades ago that lived in Forks with the last name of Cullen. Also, that they were vampires. The only thing that doesn't match up is that fact that there were 3 males and 2 females. Oh, plus, he mentioned you, Edward." I looked over at him to see his eyes wide.

"Wow. Well, this makes it a lot easier. Anyway, our family has grown. You know that blonde guy?" Emmett had gotten off the floor and was pacing in the room. I nodded in a quick response.

"Yea, well him and Alice joined us after we left." I looked towards Alice who was gazing out the window.

"Wait. How do you know about me?" Edward's voice was full of confusion.

"They said that you had this power. That well..." I kinda replayed the part about him in my head, just testing out my theory of reading minds. I must have been right because his face turned thoughtful for a few seconds.

"So, they were right? You can read minds?" I had to admit, I was intrigued. Edward sighed heavily.

"Yes. They were. Some vampires have powers. I can read minds, Alice has visions of the future, and Jasper, the blonde male, can feel emotions and change them." Holy crap. This was - well, what word could sum it up? Amazing? Stunning? Overwhelming?

"Well, we're not really done telling you stuff. You know how Sam disappeared before you were attacked?" I nodded yes, and Emmett continued speaking,"Well, he didn't disappear." Woah, woah, what?

For the next hour, Emmett, Edward, and Alice explained to me all about how Sam was a werewolf. They also explained about the treaty and I felt a pang of guilt that they had come here to tell me about this while endangering themselves because of the treaty. They kept talking about how they don't drink human blood, which was an incredible relief, and how they were still dangerous. I heard all about werewolves, and by the end of the hour, I was proud to say that I was pretty much an expert. Every aspect of a werewolf or vampire's life was covered.

"I know it's a lot to cover-" Alice started to say but I interrupted.

"No, no, it's fine. It's actually pretty, well, pretty cool." Everyone laughed at that. There was something I needed to do, though. "I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I kinda need to go." They all turned their surprised glances to me. Then, they all nodded, gave me their goodbyes, and headed out.

Then, I got in the car and drove.

***

After hearing all about vampires and werewolves, I decided to forgive Sam. It was pretty much my fault anyway. I had provoked him and angered him. Plus, I didn't need to be so harsh. It wasn't really his fault that he had attacked, and now I felt so guilty.

I ignored Emmett's warning of to stay away from Sam, and I drove to where I was sure Sam would be. First Beach, where he had so many memories. I needed to get their and extinguish any guilt or anguish that he felt.

I parked the car along the curb and got out. It was chilly and the wind whipped my hair in my face. The bitterness of it all made my scars sting. A tiny voice in the back of my head told me to not forgive him, but I couldn't help it. It hurt me deeply to think that possibly, just maybe, I loved Sam Uley. He had been through so much and thrown his love for Leah away. From the past conversation, I knew why. He had imprinted, and on me.

I walked speedily through the sand of the beach and saw a man sitting on a tree log a few yards away. My heart sped up and a tear escaped my watering eyes. He must be hurting so much. Who wouldn't be after nearly killing someone you love? I ran up to him and he finally heard my feet shuffling through the sand. His head snapped up and the agonizing pain in his eyes nearly made me jump into his arms and tell him everything would be ok. It felt strange to have your feelings for someone change so quickly.

"Oh, Emily. I'm so sorry. Please forgive me. I didn't mean to ever hurt you. I just -" I cut him off and put my finger up to his lips. I had to stand on my tiptoes just to reach his head. He looked at me with this pleading look, it was so hard not to love him.

"I know, Sam. I know everything. I know what you are, I know what the Cullens are, and I don't care. I love you." With these words, his eyes widened as he smiled brightly and took his my face into his feverish hands.

I was ashamed to admit that when our lips met in a burning passion, all thoughts of Jared left me.
