Happy Ending

i'd like to say that this isn't your typical "Jacob finally imprints" story, except that it is. The teen rating is a safety net. Just in case something later in the story requires it. Jacob/OC ok. I'm really, really sorry. This story is just not working out. so unless I have some huge story epiphany, this story is cancelled.again, I'm really really sorry.

This is my first story. Enjoy!

Chapter five: Explanation

I watched her walk away with her cousin, feeling more buoyant than I had in weeks. Amber looked back and waved, and Tyler leaned down to whisper in her ear, “Don’t waste your breath, Amber. I hear he’s still pining over Bella.” I winced and hoped Amber hadn’t noticed- I shouldn’t have been able to hear them.

"The Swan girl?" she asked turning to her cousin.

I expected the pain to wind me, it always did when something reminded me of her, but it didn’t. I merely felt a brief pang of sadness at the name. My eyes widened in wonder. Maybe I was getting over her. This morning I would not have thought that to be possible. Surely not. Could it have been Amber? My own words echoed in my head, spoken to Bella what seemed like a lifetime ago. ”It’s not like love at first sight, really. It’s more like…gravity moves. When you see her, suddenly it’s not the earth holding you here any more. She does. And nothing matters more than her.” Could I have imprinted? Impossible. There would never be anyone but Bella. I felt disloyal even thinking it. But she chose him. He’s probably already changed her. She’s dead anyway, why should it matter? The bitterness I had been trying to keep away leaked through.

I pushed the subject from my mind and glanced down at my watch. It was almost five. I needed to be getting back to the pack, to see if they needed me. I changed and ran to Emily’s house, for once not trying to force myself to remain devoid of thoughts

When I entered the Cabin, Quil, Jared, and Embry were sitting at the kitchen counter wolfing down huge plates of hamburgers (no pun intended). My stomach growled and I went to sit next to them. “Hey, Quil, give me some of those. I’m starving.”

All three of my brothers looked at me with open mouths- Embry’s was filled with hamburger. I wondered why they looked so surprised, they had to have heard me coming.

"What? You guys look like you’ve just seen a ghost. Is there something on my face?” I touched it and realized the cause of their surprise. I was smiling. I tried to compose my face into the bitter mask I knew it had been in for the last month and a half, but couldn’t quite manage it.

Embry was the first to recover. He swallowed and said “Dude. What happened to you?”

"I'm not really sure to be honest, I just helped this girl Amber find her way out of the forest, and now I feel a lot better.”

Quil and Jared exchanged glances.

“We better get Sam.” Jared said.

“Why?” I asked, confused. "I there something wrong?"

“Not exactly... We can’t be sure until you change.” He said quickly. “Sam!” He called into the small house. “Sam! Where are you? We need you out here.”

“I’m coming” Sam’s voice came from somewhere inside. Soon he and Emily were walking towards us, hand in hand. Emily looked worried, Sam annoyed.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” Emily asked anxiously.

“Nothing- nothing’s wrong… exactly.” Jared said hesitantly. “We just need to see something.”

“We think Jake imprinted.” Embry blurted out.

“WHAT?!!” I shouted.

Quil winced. “Calm down Jake. There’s just no other explanation. I know what it’s like.”

“You don’t understand. I can’t have imprinted. It’s just going to be her! Always her! It’s not possible that I-“ but then an image of Amber flashed in my memory. Amber smiling, Sapphire eyes twinkling. I remembered how I’d felt when she’d smiled- Like I could live to make her happy. And when she cried, the overwhelming need to protect her. “No.” I said, my denial almost a whisper.

“Jacob.” Embry tried to console me. “It’s OK. It will be good for you to get over Bell-“ He cut off, afraid of the pain he would have caused me before- before I imprinted.

Emily touched my face with a cool, gentle hand. “Jake.”

“We can’t know for sure until you change.” Sam said grimly. “Come on.” He turned to his fiancé. “Emily, you stay here. We’ll be back soon.” He kissed her softly, and stroked the scars on her cheek with the backs of his fingers. For once, seeing the gesture of love didn’t hurt, it just made me feel lonely. And it wasn’t Bella I wanted to be with in that moment, it was… Amber.

Once outside, Sam, Quil, Jared, and Embry removed their clothes and shifted. I reluctantly did the same.

My mind flooded with Sam’s memory of imprinting Emily. I’d seen it before, but this time was different, because now I had something to compare it to.

Him and Leah, a happy couple. Then him seeing Emily for the first time. All of a sudden, nothing else in the world existed. Not even Leah. Everything else had seemed to melt away, and it was just her. Just her.

I felt what he felt every time he saw those horrible scars on the face of his beloved, knowing he had caused them. The guilt nearly overwhelmed him every time he looked at her face, or held her scarred hand.

There was Emily patting his huge hand as he wept over the hurt he had caused both her and poor Leah Clearwater. Her presence seemed to suck away the anguish.

Jared’s memories came next, how he’d thought Kim plain until he’d changed. Then it was like she was the only thing that mattered to him. Whenever he looked at her, all he could see was perfection. Every time she smiled, he rejoiced. When she cried he was always there to wipe way her tears.

And Quil, It wasn’t quite the same with him. It wasn’t romance. It was love in it’s purest form. From the moment she smiled her gap toothed smile and looked at him with those big, dark, baby eyes all he wanted was to make her happy, and to protect her from anything that would hurt her.

Jake Embry thought. Tell us about her.

I started from the pain this morning and they flinched at the agony, as did I. Then the point where it all changed, the point when I saw her. I tried to refrain from telling them all about her life, but it was useless. I ran through the entire conversation in my head.

Their reactions varied. Quil and Embry were exultant, glad that I was no longer going to be sullen.

Hey! You didn’t do too bad! She’s kind of hot! Embry commented. I made a mental note to slap him once I had hands again. He inched away from me slightly.

Jared was worried how I was going to tell her- It hadn’t gone well when he first told Kim. She’d screamed and ran and refused to see him for a whole day until her feelings for him prevailed over her shock and disbelief.

Sam was a little sad at how I felt so disloyal at having imprinted when I had told Bella that it would always be her I saw. It made him angry too, my feelings of loyalty to Bella, a traitor in his eyes. Bella who had chosen the bloodsucker. Bella, who had become one of them. That thought still hurt. I still loved her. She was still my best friend. And she had chosen death.

I sighed. Let’s change back and eat. I’m starved
