I opened my eyes slowly to another gray morning. It was raining lightly and the clouds hung low. I sat up and took a deep breathe. I searched the room for Edward, but he wasn’t there. My face automatically fell and I could feel my heart sink. I sulked to the bathroom, wondering where he could possibly be.

I returned to my room - still no Edward - when I noticed a piece of paper on my desk. It was Edwards perfect handwriting.

Bella,

I’m sorry I had to leave. I know once you’re up and realize I‘m not there, you’ll get that look on your face, and I know, you know exactly what I‘m talking about. Please don’t be upset with me. I have a very good reason for not being with you, but you’ll just have to wait to find out. I’ll be busy all day, but will be by to pick you up at around 6:00 pm.

Alice said she would keep you company, so you don’t go mad trying to guess what I’m doing.

Remember it’s a surprise, and Alice will not be giving you any hints, so don’t even think about it.

Forever Yours,

Edward

I put the letter back on the desk. I was still a little confused and maybe even angry. I didn’t like Edward’s surprises. The last time he did something like this we were going to the prom, something I didn‘t forgive him for a very long time. Although I did have some fun that night. What was he up too? I tried to remember if there were any dances at school. I was pretty sure there wasn’t. I don’t remember seeing any posters or flyers about anything.

My thoughts were interrupted with the ring of the door bell. No doubt that was Alice. I quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and a white turtle neck. I tripped at the top of the stairs, almost falling all the way down. But luckily caught the rail and regained my balance. I went slowly the rest of the way.

I finally got to the door unscathed. I pulled open the door and to my surprise it wasn’t the pale, elfin person I was expecting. But instead stood a very tall, tan familiar face.

“Jake!” I gasped. My first reaction was to through my arms around his neck and hug him, but I restrained from trying to look too excited. I hadn’t seen him since he brought over my bike, and almost got into a fight with Edward. I remembered I was still very angry with him. I tried to play the part even though I was so ecstatic to seem him.

“Hi Bella.” His voice was solemn, and he looked tired. His face wasn’t that same boy I knew, and once was so close too.

“Jake, what are you doing here?” My voice came out higher than I anticipated, with a slight edge of confusion. I cleared my throat, trying to regain my composure. I was caught so off guard, I wasn’t sure what to say or how to react.

I looked around outside, searching to see if Alice was anywhere in view. Thankfully she wasn’t, but I knew she was likely to just suddenly appear at any second.

“I needed to talk to you about that damn bloodsucker that we’ve been tracking.” He spoke with such anger. His face had a hard edge.

I looked at him irritated. “Why did you even bother coming if your going to be so rude.” I hated the turn our relationship had taken. We were not the same people anymore. There was no way I could be friends with him, as long as Edward was in my life. Which meant we would never be friends again, at least not the way it was. “Just say what you have to say and leave. I’ve got things to do, and Alice will be here soon.” I was shocked at how convincingly cold I was.

The expression on his face changed. I had made him even more angry, but his eyes looked hurt. I’m sure he wasn’t expecting that, but what could I do.

“We lost her.” His voice was definitely annoyed. “We were so close at one point, and then suddenly she was gone. We haven’t been able to catch her scent in almost three days, and there hasn‘t been any deaths or missing persons.” He wasn’t angry anymore, his eyes now held concern, concern for my safety. We both knew Victoria was only here for one reason. If she had gone missing, then she must be planning something.

I looked at his face, and smiled warily. The sudden change of his mood, made me realize that even though our friendship dwindled on a thin line, he still undoubtedly cared for me. As selfish as it might seem, I was pleased to see that he still feared for my life, that he cared.

I gently placed my hand on his cheek. His face was hot, and it made me feel safe. He looked at me with longing in his eyes.

“Thank You.” I said sincerely. I stared at his tired face, wishing more than anything that things could be the same. “It’s good to see you Jake, even under the circumstances.” My hand left his face. “I’ll tell the others that you’ve lost track of her, and we need to be extra careful.”

“Fine.” he said and turned to leave, but instead just stood there. “I miss you.” He still didn’t face me. “Be safe Bella, and don’t choose anything stupid.” He turned to face me now. His face tormented with a mixture of emotions. He swiftly ran the back of his hand against my cheek.

I smiled. Then he was gone.
