4. Forks High School

Rating 5/5   Word Count 1287   Review this Chapter

As I rolled out of bed I registered vaguely what day it was. The first day of school. I felt like I was in high school again…briefly. I wasn’t sure if I like knowing I would be teaching kids the same age as Edward and I had been. Maybe even teaching Edward himself. I shuddered away from that possibility.

I got ready and rushed out the door. I jumped into my car and sped to the school. I was so grateful that I had finally gotten a new car. My little silver Subaru Outback was a good car for Forks and for me. I had crashed it twice in the past year. Nothing serious thankfully. I parked up near the office and stepped outside into the cold August wind. I walked up to the front desk to pick up the roll. I greeted Mrs. Mason (yes, Ms. Cope got married to Mr. Mason).

“How are you dear? Are you looking forward to the new school year?” I smiled warmly at her and replied, “I’m fine. Yes, I am looking forward to this year. Hopefully it’s better than last year. The memory of my first year teaching came back to me with surprising force. The students didn’t care and didn’t listen. The only students who even pretended to listen were Angela’s little brothers. They were smart but never really caught on in class.

I walked down the familiar path and into the classroom. It looked more like a library though, than a classroom. All different kinds of books lined the walls horror, romance, action, and science fiction. They were ordered by personal preference with my favorites by my desk. I flicked the humming, fluorescent lights on to see who was in my class and when. The twins were in my third period class.

I saw 4 names I didn’t recognize on my roll. Lillian King, Anthony Mason, Mary Brandon and Peter Whitlock seemed random enough. I don’t think the Cullen’s had anything to do with them. I pushed the thought of them to the back of my mind as my first period class walked in. the year had begun. I gave them a lecture on what our plan was for the year. They all cheered when I said there was hardly any homework in this class. I knew I could win them over.

The day went by without anything of consequence happening. I was walking to the faculty lounge to get my lunch when I heard their conversation. It all sounded so familiar. “Who are they?” asked the tall brown haired boy. “Dun no, some new foreign exchange students or something. They are so pale; they are probably from Norway or something. The blonde one is so hot…” I tuned out the rest of their chat.

I felt lightheaded as I remembered my similar conversation 8 years ago. The crowded cafeteria and Jessica filling me in on the gorgeous outcasts. I remembered Edward coming into my home to talk to me and the sudden resolve in his eyes. I froze instantly realizing that he was here. He had enrolled to try to get me back. If I didn’t have Kristen and Jake I’m fairly sure I would have gone back to him. He knew that too. I grumbled off to class, no longer hungry.

I walked in and scanned through my roll. Lillian King was the only name I didn’t recognize in my next class. I’m fairly sure Edward wouldn’t dress up as a girl to hide from people he once knew. I didn’t register it and took a seat at my desk, hoping it was just some new girl.

I had no such luck as the bell rang and the kids found there seats. She glided to the seat in the back and looked at me. She looked exactly the same. Her flowing blond hair and perfect body intimidated me even though I was her teacher. I cleared my throat and began class. “Hello class. I’m Mrs. Black.” I put emphasis on those words just for her benefit. She flinched and I felt a wave of smugness roll over me. “Seeing as this is an honors class, you will be starting your work much sooner. Next week we will begin Bram Stoker’s Dracula.”

The rest of class dragged on as I let my class do whatever they please. They bell rang and I spoke, “Lillian, please some here so I may have a word.” she glided forward and we pretended to talk about dress code until everyone had left. She whispered into my ear, “His alias is Anthony Mason. He has contacts, a wig and glasses on. Don’t worry we will be watching you Bella.” I looked at her in shock, disbelief and sheer gratitude. Rosalie and I had never been close but I had a feeling it might change. I grumbled a thank you as I searched through the roll.

I scanned quickly through and caught his name. He was in my eighth period class. I was relieved I wouldn’t have to face him for a while. I was so worried and yet ecstatic to see him again. I wanted to smell his sweet breath and hear his perfect, velvet voice. I felt, once again, like I was in high school. I always thought my raging hormones had left with him. Guess they came back.

My seventh period class was good. They listened quietly and then when they had free time at the end of class didn’t go to crazy. Not that I noticed. I was so distracted by the thought of him being my student I didn’t really notice. The bell jerked me out of my trance like state. I saw Mary Brandon, new girl, walking towards my desk. She looked up at me with her topaz eyes and I realized who it was.

“Bella, don’t worry. We have people watching out for you and him. He moved back in with us and said that he gave up his evil ways. He is in your next class but we will be too. Jasper will be watching. Don’t worry.” she turned without another word and left. I was so happy to see her. We had been like sisters. Remembering all the good times we had distracted me until the tardy bell rang. I saw Jasper instantly. He looked exactly the same. His blonde hair seemed longer then however.

Edward on the other hand had a great disguise. It didn’t fool me though. He had a black wig styled in a shag and very thick glasses. But the part that threw me off track was his eyes. His eyes were a piercing green that matched his face perfectly. I wondered if I was looking into a human Edwards eyes. His glasses sat crookedly on his nose and it reminded me of Harry Potter.

I went through class like nothing was off or wrong. I passed out their first assignment as they chatted about the summer. Jasper and Edward sat in the corner mumbling quietly. I wondered what they were talking about when I caught the end of Jasper’s sentence. “Edward. Just go up to her and tell her how you feel. She wants you back to. I know how she feels.” I had completely forgotten about Jasper’s power. I flushed as I realized what I had been feeling.

The bell rang for the final time that day. Edward came to my desk and admitted to me how he felt. “Bella. Isabella.” His voice sounded nervous. It was strange. “I really can’t stand being away from you any longer. Please, love, come back to me. I love you. I need you. Come back.”
