10. Partay time!
Rating 3.4/5 Word Count 2855 Review this Chapter
“Your clothes are on the bed, make sure you wipe down the counter when you’re done!” Ally yelled at me from downstairs. I smirked and turned on our bedroom light, looking at the clothes. I was careful not to touch anything with the grease on my hands so I went into the bathroom, and turned on the water.
Tonight was Friday night, our barbeque party, when we’d announce the big news. I sighed, and got into the shower. Ally had got back from Maine yesterday and I had surprised her with my own big news. I had gotten the new job down at Forks station. Yup, I was going to be a part time police officer. Perfect job for a werewolf, right?
After my shower, I pulled on the clothes that she had set out for me then toweled my hair, wanting it to dry quickly. I went downstairs and found Ally vacuuming the living room and so I tip-toed behind her and put my arms around her, making her jump.
“Jake! You’re gonna give me a heart attack one of these days!” She laughed, turning off the vacuum and tying it up.
“Sowwy,” I said, pathetically looking down at my feet. She giggled and gave me a kiss on the cheek.
“No problem, honey. Did you wipe the counter?” She asked. I felt my eyes widen and I bit my lip.
“Uh…” I said, getting ready to run.
“Jacob!” Ally yelled. I ran up the stairs and quickly wiped down the counter and ran back down. She tried to look angry with me, but she just started to laugh again.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and we both grinned.
“Partay time!” We yelled at the same time. She put up the vacuum and I answered the door quickly. Embry, Paul, Sam, Emily, Lizzy, and Leah all strolled in talking and laughing. Soon after, Jared and his soul mate Kim came through the door, holding hands and grinning. We were all excited that they were getting married in less than a month---that would be a fun wedding.
A little bit later, Quil and the infamous 7-year-old Claire came in, carrying a huge bag full of toys. Lizzy and Claire took the toys upstairs. I knew that Ally and I would definitely have a huge mess to clean up after the party because of those two.
While I was getting everyone drinks, Ally turned on the stereo, pumping up the music. I grinned at her across the room full of people and she winked at me. The doorbell rang again and when I opened the door, I was met by a grinning Rachel rolling in Dad’s wheelchair. I leaned down and gave him a huge hug and he patted me on the back. As I tried to straighten up, Rachel pulled me back down to her level and kissed me on the cheek with a grin.
Once everyone was in the living room and enjoying themselves, I went out and started up the grill, and was followed by the other guys who always seem to follow the scent of food. Embry came around and helped me grill the steaks and hamburgers while Quil, Paul, and Jared lounged on the backyard chairs, talking.
I thought about what Ally told me…were Paul and Embry really upset that they hadn’t found someone yet? I knew they dated random girls occasionally, but would they ever really be happy with that? Didn’t they deserve what Sam, Quil, Jared and I had?
Leah, Kim, Emily, Ally and Rachel all came out, starting to set up the big table and talking about how glad they were that it wasn’t raining tonight.
“Jake, you seem quiet today, what’s up?” Embry asked, causing me to finally look up from the fires on the grill.
“I dunno. Just thinkin’,” I replied. After we were all set up, I rolled Dad out to sit at the head of the table and we all began eating. Ally nudged me with her elbow and I looked sideways at her. She raised an eyebrow and mouthed ‘what’s wrong’. I just smiled and shook my head, mouthing ‘nothing’.
We all ate, talking and passing food around. Laughter from one side of the table drifted onto the other and spurts of giggles erupted often. Lizzy was reciting her numbers this time, while Claire giggled and corrected her when she had them wrong. Quil was trying to get Claire to eat more, but she just shook her head and said she wasn’t hungry.
She should be hungry! She was skinnier than any little girl I’ve ever seen before! At least her brain made up for it…she was ‘highly gifted’ meaning she was way smart. She had already skipped the first grade, and she was really pretty too. I knew Quil was currently in that ‘big brother’ phase for her, but I really thought that would change as soon as she had hormones.
“Okay everyone! We have a big surprise!” I heard Ally yell next to me. I turned and smiled at her, taking her hand under the table. She was grinning brightly and clearly very excited.
“Yeah, big news, people!” I said. Everyone laughed and then quieted down, looking at the two of us.
“You tell them, or should I?” She whispered to me.
“Go ahead, Al,” I said, making her smile even wider. I knew she’d love telling everyone anyway.
“All right, well…on Monday we went to the doctor’s office, and she told us some news. Jake and I are about to be…parents!” She yelled out, practically jumping from excitement.
Mr. Walton, or next door neighbor, probably thought that there was an explosion happening in our backyard. No, seriously, everyone exploded with excitement and happiness.
Congratulations, screams, shouts, and curses were flying at Ally and I in the speed of sound. I got numerous pats on the back and punches on the shoulder, proud looks, hugs and kisses on the cheek. Dad actually started to cry a little with happiness---shocking me until no end---while Rachel just applauded happily.
“Let’s celebrate!” Sam suddenly yelled, turning the music louder and grabbing Emily up to dance. Jared and Kim soon followed, holding each other closely. Then I stood up, taking Ally’s hand and strolling over, while nodding our heads to the beat.
Well I’m not paralyzed
But, I seem to be struck by you
I want to make you move
Because you’re standing still
If your body matches
What your eyes can do
You’ll probably move right through
Me on my way to you
I hold out for one more drink
Before I think
I’m looking too desperately
But so far has not been fun
I should just stay home
If one thing really means one
This club will hopefully
Be closed in three weeks
That would be cool with me
Well I’m still imagining
A dark lit place
Or your place or my place
I laughed and held Ally tight against my chest while she curled her fingers through her hair and moved her hips with the music.
“Why haven’t we updated our party songs in six years?” I asked in her ear. She just laughed and shouted “classics!” making me laugh even harder. Looking up, I saw that Quil had thrown Claire onto his shoulders and was making her giggle as they danced. Everyone looked like they were having fun…
After my girl was tired, we went back to the table where Dad, Paul and Embry were playing cards joyously. Ally started to clean up and I helped her out, making her smile.
When that girl smiled, I felt like I would anything in the world to get her to smile again just for me.
“I love you,” he whispered, his hot breath tickling in my ear. I grinned wider and kept brushing my teeth. We were facing the mirror, and he had no shirt on while we were getting ready for bed. Why didn’t he have a shirt on? Well, I’d like to thank my hormones for that one…hehe.
“What are you giggling about?” Was his next question.
“Nothin, just thinkin about how sexy you are,” I said, kissing him on the chest. He grinned and winked at me, spitting the toothpaste out of his mouth. He grabbed me by the waist and kissed me until I couldn’t breathe, making my heart jump at the taste of mint.
Each and every kiss he gave me meant the world to me. I don’t know if he even realizes the effect he has on me…without him I would be nothing, nowhere, no one. His burning hands lifted the hem of my night shirt, sprawling his searing fingers against the small of my back, pushing me closer to him. My fingers instantly curled into his hair, then traced one hand down his back, just the way I knew he loved it.
In between the kiss, we let go for short gasps of air, him whispering my name and then kissing me again. I felt something soft behind me, so I instantly knew he had laid me down on the bed. I let his burning temperatures heat me also, while my eyelids fluttered in pure bliss.
It was always like nothing else I’ve ever felt before. I swear, it was the best feeling on earth to have him lay next to me in bed, softly snoring while his hot arm was thrown across my body. I didn’t even own many blankets anymore---I didn’t need them! His body was always the only heat I would ever need. Actually, I would turn up the air conditioner in our room sometimes, just so I wouldn’t melt in the middle of the night.
I looked at the clock and saw that it was already 2:15 pm. Why can’t I sleep? I should be tired as hell, but I couldn’t manage to drift off like Jake had two hours ago. Suddenly, my stomach rumbled loudly. OH! I was hungry! That made sense…this pregnancy was going to be more difficult than I thought.
After squiggling out from under him, I trudged down the stairs, turning on the kitchen light. While rubbing my stomach, I perused the kitchen. Was I just imagining this, or did my belly already seem bigger? I sighed, nothing looked good enough to eat.
Suddenly, I had a spontaneous urge for ice cream. Looking through the freezer, I only found chocolate---Jake and mines’ favorite. Why did we only own chocolate ice cream? They’re were thousands of other flavors in the world!
I guess that craving thing that they talk about in pregnancy is real. Heck, I didn’t even know what I was craving for. I just knew that I needed ice cream. Right. Now. In an almost frenzied state, I grabbed the car keys and pulled my jacket out of the closet. I felt something behind me and I whirled around, three inches away from Jake’s astonished face.
“Where are you going this late at night?” He whispered worriedly, looking into my eyes for the truth. I groaned and hung my head.
“I know this is going to sound really stupid, but I really, really, really need ice cream. Right now.” I replied, sighing again. Looking up, I saw that his eyes were wide and eyebrows were raised.
“Seriously? You kiddin me?” He asked. I gave him a disbelieving look.
“Do I look like I’m joking with you?” I asked.
“Well, it is 2:30 in the morning!” He said exasperatedly.
“Two words, Jake: pregnancy cravings,” I said, rolling my eyes at his blank expression. “Didn’t you read the magazines I gave you?”
“Yes, I did!” He said defensively. My eyes narrowed and he shrugged. “Well…I skimmed ‘em.”
“Ugh, whatever! I have to go get some ice cream,” I said, throwing my hands up in defeat. I tried to walk away, but of course, he stepped in front of me, blocking my path.
“We have ice cream in the freezer, Ally.”
“No, we only have chocolate ice cream. I need something else!” I insisted.
“Ok, calm down. Listen, no stores will be open right now,” he tried to reason with me. I shook my head childishly and scowled.
“I don’t care. I’m going to look for some!” I practically yelled. He sighed irritably and ran a hand down his face.
“Fine, just hold on for a second, ok?” He asked. I was curious as to what he would do, so I nodded slowly. He walked over to the phone and started to dial numbers rapidly.
“Hey Sam…no, everything’s fine…how’s patrol?…that’s good…no, listen, I need ice cream…what? NO! Ally wants some…yes, in the middle of the night…no joke…how was I supposed to know what a pregnancy craving was?…we only have chocolate, and she wants something else…ok, hold on…”
“Ally, what flavor do you want?” He asked, putting his hand on the receiver. I thought about it for a moment, tapping my chin, and decided.
“Mint chocolate chip,” I licked my lips thinking of how good that sounded right now. Jake just sighed and put the phone back to his ear.
“Yeah, she wants mint chocolate chip…you don’t? crap!…no, she can’t wait…hey, do you mind asking any of the guys if they have some?…ok, call me back.” He said tiredly, hanging up. He turned to me and growled slightly. It wasn’t scary at all since I knew what his real growl sounded like.
“What?! It’s not my fault!” I whined. He smiled and reached his arms out. I gratefully collapsed into his embrace, loving the feel of his hot, comforting skin. The phone rang less than twenty seconds later and he answered it, sounding a little less irritable.
“Yeah?…Really?…that’s great, we’ll come by real quick and pick it up…ok, be there in a sec,” he said, hanging up the phone and smiling down at me.
“Embry has some---it’s apparently his favorite,” he said, pulling the car keys out of my grasp. I waited while he put on a t-shirt, then followed him silently as we got into the Rabbit.
While he was driving, my stomach rumbled again, louder. He smirked at me and I closed my eyes, waiting for the sweet ice cream taste. When we finally got to Embry and Paul’s house, I saw Embry standing outside, grinning and holding a paper bag.
“Hey Al, wuz up, yo?” He asked when I rolled down my window. I smiled at him tiredly and pounded his extended fist.
He was bare-chested, but I was used to now. I remembered back when I used to be so awkward around all the guys because they always ran around half-naked, then I realized that they had to carry around clothes with them when they transformed…
“Nothin much home dawg, you?” I asked, taking the bag from him.
“Naw, I good. Just patrollin’ the streets, ya know,” he laughed.
“Sweetz, thanks so much for this. Talk to you later, brotha.” I grinned, winking at him. He laughed and waved at Jake, who just scowled back.
“Bye guys,” he grinned, putting his hands in his pockets. Jake pressed the button to make my window go up and before I knew it, the car was racing back to our house. I giggled at Jake’s expression.
“Why do you always have to do that with him?” He snapped. I just grinned wider and shook my head.
“Jake, Embry is my brotha from anotha motha!” I laughed as he rolled his eyes. I quickly ripped open the paper bag and saw that Embry had even added a plastic spoon for me! Gosh, he was such a good brother. I dove into the ice cream, savoring the taste on my tongue.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Jake giving me a weird look.
“What?” I asked, my mouth full of minty goodness.
“Why are you moaning like that?” He asked, grinning.
“Mmmm….soooo good…” I sighed happily. He parked the car in the garage and walked out to my side, opening the door for me.
“Jakey, will you carry me?” I asked, batting my eyelashes at him. He didn’t even answer, just obeyed and carried me back inside the house while I stuffed my face like a pig.
“Thank you, sweetie!” I smiled, giving him a long kiss.
“You taste good. I want some ice cream too now,” He grinned and setting me down on the sofa, then going to the kitchen. He came back with a spoon and his own chocolate ice cream.
So there we sat, at 3 o’clock in the middle of the night, eating ice cream and talking about the baby. The future baby that was currently making me so desperate for mint chocolate chip.
I cuddled closer to him as the ice cream made me cold. He wrapped an arm around me while talking about painting the extra bedroom next to ours as the nursery.
I must have fallen asleep listening to his rough and gorgeous voice, because a little while later, I could feel him moving me around, then leaving---probably to put the ice cream back---then carrying me up the stairs. I felt the soft bed under me and I quickly snuggled closer to him, sighing happily as I felt his chest so close to me. I drifted off then, stomach and heart now content.
