13. Waking up without you

Ally’s POV:

I rolled onto my side, my hair tickling my cheek as it tumbled in disarray across my face. My eyes wouldn’t open on their own, so I reached out blindly next to me, feeling nothing but the softness of Jake’s pillow. I pushed my nose deeper into the pillows, trying to catch the remainder of his scent.

Even though Jacob had told me that he would be gone this morning for a quick training at the Fork’s station, it still hurt to wake up without him. I was so ecstatic to hear that Jake was going to be a police officer but this morning training thing better not happen too often…

I forced my eyes open, allowing my gaze to fall onto gray tufts of clouds in the sky. A shadow was played into our room and I could still feel the remainder of Jake’s unnatural heat next to me. I sat up slowly, stretching out and yawning. I scratched my nose, smiling as I thought of how Jake made fun of me for doing that in the mornings.

I don’t know why, but I couldn’t help but think of Daniel repeatedly that morning. It was as if I knew something weird was happening all the way across the country, and I couldn’t shake the feeling. I would have to call him later today -- just to make sure this whole ‘sibling connection’ thing was just in my head. God, I missed him.

I made myself a bowl of Cocoa Krispies, thanking the heavens that my morning sickness phase was over now. I hated waking up and running away from Jake’s morning kisses just so I could throw up. He had to hold my hair while I puked into the toilet bowl…grossness times ten.

Anyway, while I was making my breakfast, I heard the doorbell ring. I went out to the door and opened it, giggling as I saw what awaited me on the porch.

Embry was standing there, with a sleeping Lizzy hanging on his right shoulder and a huge neon pink baby bag on the left. He was scowling, but I could hint a bit of laughter in his frown.

“Mommy, can you make my breakfast too?” I laughed quietly so I wouldn’t wake her up as he came in and put the bag down.

“I’m taking care of her today cuz Emily and Sam had to go sign up for her kindergarten classes or something,” he whispered. I nodded and opened the door to the guest room that was always kept clean for anyone who needed a place to crash. Sometimes, when Paul got mad at his dad, he slept over, or when Lizzy needed a nap, it was always ready.

“She’s so adorable,” I whispered, leaning down and kissing her cheek.

“I know, she’s gonna be a heartbreaker when she grows up.” Embry laughed, closing the door behind him and sitting down on the couch. I went back to the kitchen and got my cereal, sitting next to him and turning on the TV.

“How’s it rollin’?” Embry asked, punching my shoulder lightly.

“Eh, just getting by, dude.”

“Worried about the baby?” He asked, serious now. I turned the volume down and nodded softly.

“I can’t help but worry, Embry. Jake keeps telling me not to, but…it’s hard not to worry.”

“Why are you so worried about it?”

I sighed and leaned my head back on the green sofa. How am I supposed to explain something like that?

“Well…” After that, it seemed to spill out of my mouth simultaneously.

“Ok, first of all: I don’t how to be a mother! I don’t know what to do if it cries, and I don’t even know how to make baby food! Second, how are we going to pay for all the billions of things that a baby needs? Oh, and then we’re going to have to wake up a million times during the night for it, and I happen to like sleeping! And you know what else? I don’t know how to change a diaper! I mean, I’ve seen Emily do Lizzy’s and stuff, but I wouldn’t know how to do a boy’s! What if it is a boy then? And also, what about baths? How am I supposed to give it a bath? What if I ended up drowning it or something? Plus, I can’t go through that much pain! Do you know how painful labor is supposed to be? What if something bad happens to the baby? What if I…oh, I’m going to be such a bad mother!”

I didn’t realize it, but tears had started to stream down my face and I was flapping my arms around crazily while speaking. Embry managed to calm me down by making soft shushing noises and patting my hair like only a big brother could do. He sighed and drew me into a comforting hug. It reminded me of what Daniel would do for me when I missed my parents…

“Listen sis. You’re crazy, I swear! Would you listen to yourself? Ok…let’s think this through a bit more slowly. You take care of Lizzy and Claire all the time, you know how to take care of kids! Even if it is a boy, it’s not like we’re all that troublesome in the infant years anyway! Wait till it’s a toddler for that… you can pay for all the things that a baby needs because Jake just got a job and plus the entire tribe is like family, we pick up where others leave off! Remember when Lizzy was first born? We all helped, and we’re gonna do the same for you guys. Waking up in the middle of the night isn’t really that bad, Jake’s used to not having to sleep too much and you can take turns for it all. Next in business…oh, and you can’t make your baby drown, you idiot! Just take Lizzy’s old bathing tub and lay the baby in there! You’ve seen how it is, and it’s not like there aren’t parenting classes and all that kind of stuff. Now, uh, labor…I’d rather not talk about. You can just…deal with that with Jake or something….” He looked away, finally ending his own speech.

I sat there, my eyes and mouth wide open. Did Embry Call just say all of that? I mean, I’ve talked with him numerous times of course, but he’s never like this! He’s playful and funny, but he’s much more quiet and reserved than the other guys in the pack. It’s like Paul holding down his temper or like Jake not working on his car…it’s not something you see everyday!

“Wow. Thanks Embry…how do you know all of that?” I asked, wiping my tears away with the back of my hand.

“I dunno,” he shrugged and grinned. I laughed and got up to put my cereal bowl in the sink. When I came back, Embry was laughing at the TV.

“Look, Shanghai Noon is on!” He pointed.

“What’s that?” I asked.

“What?! You’ve never seen this movie? It’s only the best action comedy ever!” He exclaimed.

“Oh, ok then.”

After a few more minutes, the doorbell rang again and I got up to go and get it. When I opened the door, I gasped loudly.

A burgundy colored wolf was sitting on the porch, looking up at me with big brown eyes.

“Jake? What’s wrong?” I asked worriedly as I opened the door further to let the big wolf in. But he wouldn’t move; instead, he gave out a low bark, signaling Embry to run up.

“Jake? Man, what’s wrong?” Embry leaned down. The wolf sat up a bit, and stuck out his back left paw. I gasped even louder this time and fell to my knees. The paw was broken, as well as I could see. I looked into the wolf’s eyes, seeing pain traced into the amber brown.

“Shit, I’m calling Sam,” Embry said, running back inside.

I started to cry, digging my face into the wolf’s long fur. The wolf made slow whining noises as Sam Ulley came running up to our porch.

“Ally, Ally, move, let me see it,” he said softly. I looked up and moved slightly away but kept my hand on Jake. Please, God let him be ok…
