I could feel the words showering over me. A delicate rain of truth…
You’re having two baby boys.
Boys. Little men. Boys!
Jake’s hand clasped mine and I quickly looked at him and saw his huge grin—I’m sure it matched my own—and I couldn’t help but imagine little boys running around with that huge grin and those big brown eyes.
“Baby,” he whispered, cupping my face in one of his hands while the other still gripped my own. “We’re gonna have two sons!”
“I know,” I whispered back. The sonogram looked like two little bumps, but those little bumps were the rest of my life.
“Can you believe it?! I’m going to be the proud father of sons!” He started laughing, and I felt myself join in.
The doctor congratulated us and we went out into the waiting area, where the celebration continued— Edward, Bella, Daniel, Jane, Embry and Emily were all there—and we all freaked out and almost got kicked out of the clinic for being too disruptive.
We all went back to our home, eating and drinking and talking all at once. I leaned against the wall, eating ice cream and watching them.
“I’m going to teach them how to ride dirt bikes—“ Embry was saying.
“My nephews are not going to be dirt biking—“ Daniel started.
“Oh, what are you going to name them? The names are really important—“ Emily related.
“God, playing catch and building cars, I can’t wait…” Jake ran his hands through his hair and I could feel his immense excitement thrumming through my own veins.
“They’re going to have gentlemen qualities also; we’ll make sure of it!” Bella laughed, helping Emily feed Lizzy. She hated eating anything that didn’t involve sugar, but she endured it as Bella fed her a baked potato.
“Yes, I’ll personally teach them the piano… and perhaps the guitar as well,” Edward smirked, sitting next to Bella.
I quietly went to the kitchen in order to put the ice cream back, and saw Jane in the kitchen, looking at the pictures on the wall. I watched as she paused and tilted her head at one in particular.
“That was from my first music recital,” I said, looking at the picture as well.
I had spoken softly, but she still jumped lightly, then relaxed and smiled when she saw me.The picture was of me holding a small medal and Daniel grinning proudly, with his arm around my shoulders. My friend Jessica had taken the picture, and the sunlight shined on both of us.
“I can see the family resemblance,” she said.
“Really?” I murmured. “Most people say that we don’t look related at all.”
“Nah, your cheekbones and strong chin are the exact same, and the eyes… I forgot that Dan had brown eyes before he was…changed.”
“Mmhm. I was so goofy when I was 15. I don’t blame Daniel for being so overprotective—I got into so much freakin’ trouble,” I laughed.
“Yeah, he is kind of protective. But I like that about him—it makes me feel so… loved.”
I looked at her then—I mean, really looked at her. She was the type of girl that looked soft on the outside, but you know she’s strong on the inside. Her smile was genuine and the look in her eyes as she saw the picture… it was love.
“Jane… I realize it’s hard—I mean, Daniel hasn’t told me everything, but I can tell there’s more to this story. I just want you to know…” I paused, trying to gauge her reaction. She seemed relaxed, but her eyes widened perceptibly. “I’m glad my brother found someone like you. I’ve been waiting so long for him to fall in love. He deserves it more than anyone else I know. Just… be careful with him, okay? He’s really strong on the outside, but on the inside…he’s fragile.”
“I… thank you. I mean—I’m happy that you think I’m good enough,” she bit her lip almost nervously. “I was afraid before—I didn’t think you’d like me. I’m so ordinary next to someone as perfect as him. Our relationship is very…careful. I don’t think I’d have it any other way.”
“Good,” I smiled at her, pulling her into a hug. It was soft and friendly, and just then, I felt like she was a perfect future sister-in-law. If it wasn’t for the whole my-brother-being-a-vampire thing.
But really… everything was going to be okay. I could feel it almost as assuredly as I could feel the pregnancy cravings erupting back. I need some pretzels with mustard. Now.
I opened the door to my house softly, the keys jangling in my hand as we entered. Daniel put my duffle bag down on the foyer floor and I smiled at him, feeling tired from the plain trip back home. Bella and Edward dropped us off to my home, and Daniel said he’d run home in a little bit.
“Dad, I’m home!” I yelled, feeling my voice echo through the house.
“Jane, someone else is here—“ Daniel started saying before my dad came in, grinning at me.
“There’s my sweetie pie,” he said, sweeping me into a huge hug.
“DAD!” I groaned, albeit half-heartedly. Okay, so maybe it was kind of sweet to be called ‘sweetie pie’.
But still. Not in front of my boyfriend.
“Um, Jane, I have a surprise—“ he started saying in a hesitant voice, but just then the kitchen door opened and I heard a VERY familiar voice.
“Oh finally! Janey!”
And then, another horribly familiar voice.
“Jane’s got a BOYFRIEND?! He must have brain damage.”
