Bella’s POV:

“I like her. She is perfect for him,” I whispered to Alice, too low for our new friend to hear. Alice gave me a bright smile and nodded. We had just settled down on the comfy sofas in the corner of the bohemian coffee shop, and Alice and I were holding our coffee, ready to pretend to drink it, and Jane was sipping her own.

“So, tell me all about it.” Alice said to Jane. She looked up, confused.

“All about what?” She asked. I could smell her blood from here, and it was…strange. Not bad of course, actually it smelled kind of like vanilla---but it was, like, mixed with something else. Edward had told me about it in Biology, but I wasn’t prepared for it until I could actually catch her scent…he was right, as always. We would have to ask Carlisle about it later on.

“Your old boyfriend! The break up, everything.” Alice said exuberantly.

Jane looked out the window where you could see the soft rain falling and the people around town walking through it. I felt bad for her; Alice was forcing this topic of discussion, but what if she didn’t want to talk about it? I was about to defend her, to say it was all right if she didn’t wish to talk about it, when she started speaking in a low voice.

“His name was Logan Hunter.” She shivered a bit when she said his name. “He was tall, with blonde hair, and brown eyes. He was really hot and, always there for me. I think…I think I might have fallen in love with him if I hadn’t been so wrapped up in everything else. You guys already know how involved I was at school, and that really pissed him off sometimes. He never liked the fact that I always had meetings to go to. Either it was a student council meeting, or a late newspaper night, or another basketball game. I mean, at first he was really proud of me and stuff, but then he started to get cranky about it. I quit painting in my free time to be with him, I stopped going to church as much. It seemed like the more time I tried to give him, the more he wanted. I told him I couldn’t handle it anymore and he… he flipped out. He said---” She stopped, unable to go on. Her eyes were filled with tears and Alice and I both sat next to her and patted her shoulders.

“What did he say to you?” Alice asked after a couple moments.

“He…he told me that I wasn’t worth anything, and that the only reason I was trying so hard was because I was always unnoticed. He told me that I was more likely to be single for the rest of my life rather than fall in love with someone as great as him…” She sobbed at the last part and I wrapped my arm around her, letting her cry on my shoulder.

“That asshole doesn’t know anything about you then. I’ve only known you for two hours and I already think you’re worth it all. You’re going to fall in love with someone who loves you no matter what you do. The freak doesn’t know anything about love, or else he wouldn’t have lied to you or made you feel guilty.” Alice said, rubbing Jane’s back for comfort.

“She’s right. Edward had to leave me once, for my protection; and you know what? I could still feel it…I could still feel his love. This Logan doesn’t even deserve your time, and especially not your tears.” I said softly to her.

After only a couple more seconds, she sat up straight and wiped her face, then smiled at the both of us and gave us hugs.

“You guys are so amazing. I really needed this…thank you so much. I know I just met you, but you are so sweet.” She sighed happily. We smiled back at her and started a more pleasant topic.

“So did you see anyone you like at school today?” I asked, curious of what she thought.

“Well…your brothers and you guys are the only ones who really talked to me, but other than that, these random guys kept coming up to me and asking for my number…they didn’t really even like me! It was just because I was something new, so they had to pounce before anyone else did.”

All three of us laughed, and Jane seemed to be in a much better mood. Alice winked at me, muttering under her breath so Jane wouldn’t hear us.

“Bella, find a way to bring up Daniel. See how she reacts, it’s so amazing!” She said quick and low. I was about to take up the conversation when I felt something vibrate in my pocket. I pulled out my cell phone and saw that I had one new text message.

Edward Cullen, 4:40 pm.

Hey Bells, just wondering how the girl talk is coming along. How do you like her so far?

I quickly text back my answer and slipped the phone back into my pocket. Edward and I had just taken up text messaging like all the other teenagers, I had to admit, it was pretty fun. Alice must have seen me, and she took this as means of bringing up our brother.

“Bells, was that Daniel?” She asked, this time loud enough for Jane to hear. Jane stopped laughing, and I saw her muscles freeze up a bit, before she took in a deep breath and relaxed. I grinned triumphantly.

“Oh no, it was Edward. Daniel’s still at work, remember?” I said, knowing full well that Alice already knew that Daniel was at work. “Oh my gosh Jane, you should meet Daniel.” I added in for flavor, although Edward had already told me everything about their little janitor closet meeting.

“Ah, yeah. I already met Daniel…” She trailed off.

“Oh really? How did you like him?” I asked. And Edward said I couldn’t act. I scoffed inwardly.

“He was…well, he was pretty, um---nice. And, uh. Really caring and understanding.” She stuttered. I felt a little bad for making her uncomfortable, but at least she was letting out her feelings, right?

“And hot?” Alice threw in. Jane blushed. Her cheeks turned a bright pink color and she looked down. I lifted my own hand to my cheek, remembering the time when I used to do the same…no, it was cold, smooth, and hard under my fingertips.

“Well, yeah…there’s that factor…” Jane’s voice became more playful suddenly.

“Promise you won’t tell him?” She looked both of us in the eye as we gave our promises and swore never to tell him.

“Come on, say how you really feel about him! We want to hear it!” Alice pleaded.

“He is definitely the most handsome and charming guy I’ve ever met. He was so gentle and his eyes…they were so golden like you guys. I wish I had that color of eyes. Do you all wear contacts or something?”

Alice and I both froze and unfroze in less than a second. Alice’s eyes warned me not to say anything and let her do the talking.

“Of course not, but Carlisle--our father--loves them, he always said that he was amazed at our color of eyes. I secretly think that’s why he picked us over all the other orphans.” Alice said, her tone playful and careful at the same time. It was like a line delivered by a skilled actress. Jane believed it and laughed along with us.

“I guess that’s cool. So can you…you know, tell me more about him?” She asked. Her green eyes looked sparkly and hopeful to learn more about Daniel. I really felt that they would have a great connection.

“Well…Daniel is really just a big sweetheart. He never thinks about himself, but always about others. No matter what, he will always try to make you happy or comfortable.” Alice said, smiling.

“Yes, and he likes to read, watch movies, and work hard for what he wants. He can be really funny when time calls for it, and he’s always so calm.” I related, watching Jane bite her bottom lip in attempt to hide her smile.

“So he doesn’t have a girlfriend?” Jane asked, sounding a bit surprised.

“Nope! He’s a free agent!” Alice replied happily. Jane was silent for a bit, just drinking her coffee when she looked down at her watch and gave a small yelp.

“Oh, wow. I should go home before my dad starts wondering where I am. Where do you guys live? I’ll drive you home.” She replied, picking up her keys and standing up.

“I’ll drive us there, then I’ll give you directions to drive back home.” Alice said, clearly pleased with the outcome of our conversation.

The drive was mostly silent, with an occasional question or two, about our past and hers. Alice was also giving Jane directions how to get back onto the highway, but Jane was pretty knowledgeable about the roadways already.

When Alice turned and the trees gave way to a large driveway, Jane gasped.

“Oh my gosh, is that your house? It’s…gorgeous.” She said, stunned.

“Thanks, it’s mostly Esme.” Alice said, getting out of the car.

“Yeah, our mom’s got a real knack for finding big, pretty houses.” I said, laughing. When I stepped out of the car, I saw Edward come out, smiling and waving at us.

“Hello Alice, Bella. Hi Jane.” He said, smiling at us.

“Hey Edward, bye Jane!” Alice said, giving Jane a hug. “See you tomorrow!” She danced inside and closed the door. I walked over and held Edward’s hand, smiling at the way it was a perfect fit---like puzzle pieces locking together…I hoped Dan and Jane would be that way also.

“Alright, I’ll see you later Bella, Edward. Thanks for the coffee and the talk.” Jane said, smiling and waving goodbye from the front seat of her car. We waved back and she reversed and slowly drove out, back onto the road.

“Isn’t she perfect for him?” I sighed happily.

“I definitely think so…we’re going to have to convince him though.” He chuckled softly as we both walked into the house. Emmett greeted us in the hallway with a tender hello.

“Yo. What up?” He smirked.

“Emmett, you astonish me sometimes.” Edward replied, shaking his head.

“Hey Bella, let’s go.” Emmett said, wiggling his fingers at me.

“Let’s go where?” I asked.

“Fight! You promised me a rematch!” Emmett got down into a prowler stance and I rolled my eyes.

“Emmett, get over it. You’re never going to beat me.” I said happily. “My ‘ability’ is far too above your strength.”

“Not this time, I think I figured out a way to get around your dumb ability.” He said confidently.

“Oh yeah? Let’s see how my dumb ability can thrash you this time!” I said, letting go of Edward’s hand and walking out to the backyard, Emmett and Edward following curiously. Jasper, Alice, and Rosalie came out after seeing us also, and Esme was already outside, tending to her garden.

“Esme, how was your first day teaching the second graders?” I asked, sitting next to her and touching the leaf of the lily she was currently planting.

“Oh it was wonderful! They are such sweethearts. Well, there was one, I swear that he reminded me of you, Emmett. He was quite naughty, pulling a girl’s pigtails, and then picking fights with two other boys.” Esme said. We all laughed and Emmett scowled, eyes narrowed on me.

“Bella, speaking of picking fights---” I didn’t let him finish, but instead rammed him into the chain fence that surrounded our backyard.

Without getting up from my spot next to Esme. Simply by staring at him.

Ally’s POV:

The waves were crashing into each other, and they made my headache even worse. I was lying on my back on the cool sand, staring up at the clouds surrounding La Push. The doctor’s sentence was ringing in my ears…it seems that you two are about to be parents. I heard something move next to me and I was suddenly staring into those gorgeous black eyes that I loved so much.

“Alyson…talk to me. You haven’t said anything since we left the doctor’s office… two hours ago!”

I stayed silent, closing my eyes. His voice was concerned, just like the expression on his face.

“In all the time I’ve known you, you haven’t stayed silent for more than 10 minutes…unless you were asleep. What’s wrong? Why are you mad? I thought you would be as happy as I am…or did you not want a baby…with me?” He sounded hurt and I wanted to rip my own heart out. I was evil, causing him pain like this.

“I thought…I thought you loved me.” He whispered, getting off of me and walking away. I opened my eyes and got up as quickly as I could. I ran off after him and jumped onto his back like I always did. He was always ready for me, and I’ve never fell in his presence.

“Jake…I love you more than anything else in this world. You know that. I’m just…scared.” I said, jumping back down. He turned around and gave me one of his huge teddy bear hugs that I loved.

“Ally, why didn’t you just say that? Why are you scared?” He asked, looking down into my eyes. I looked away, watching the water come up onto the shoreline and hit my toes lightly.

“What if I’m a bad mother? I can hardly take care of myself, how am I going to take care of a baby?” I said, feeling a tear escape the corner of my eye. Jake’s hot fingers caressed my cheek and wiped the tear away.

“Oh sweetheart, what am I going to do with you? A bad mother? That’s insane. You’re going to be the best mother a kid can ever have. And who said you’re going to take care of the baby all alone? I promise I’ll be with you every step of the way…every single step.” He said, picking me up and whirling me around…damn it! He knows I love it when he does that.

“Jake, what if it doesn’t like me?” I whimpered, unable to stop worrying. He put me down and kneeled in front of me. This brought him up just below my shoulder, and he leaned into me, putting his ear to my stomach. I shivered. There was something there now. A baby. I was going to be a mother! As this realization dawned on me, I looked down to see Jake talking to my belly.

“Jake, what are you doing?” I asked. He spoke louder so I could hear it.

“Hello baby, how are you feeling today? I’m great, well, you see you’re mother had a question, so sorry for bothering you. Well…she was wondering if you were going to like her in 9 months. Mhmm…right. Thanks for answering that ludicrous question, son or daughter. Whichever one you want to be for now.” He grinned and looked up at me, and I couldn’t stop laughing.

I put my hands on his shoulders, and laughed my heart out. When the giggles finally slowed down, he picked me up and carried me bridal style back to our house.

5 years ago, I didn’t think I could possibly be even happier, but now I was.
