“Oh, she beat you again, Emmett!” I yelled, giving Bella a congratulatory kiss on the cheek. She smiled and raised her hand, making Emmett stand up and then thrash into the chain-linked fence once again. Everyone laughed except for Esme who clicked her tongue disapprovingly.
“Esme, you know he deserves it, he’s been pestering me for a rematch since I beat him last weekend,” Bella said.
“Yeah, Bella hit him harder. He tried to get me and Alice to gang up on you,” Rosalie said, smirking at her struggling husband. She knew he wasn’t in any serious danger, so she was completely at ease.
“Well, I don’t like to use my power for violence, but if he really needs to be taught a lesson…what do you think, Edward?” She turned to me and asked. Bella barely ever uses her power of extra-telekinesis, and it pleasured me to know she thought of my opinion so highly.
“Do it! I can finally get back at him for all those virtue jokes he made.” I rejoiced. Bella stared at Emmett and he suddenly went flying into the water fountain that Esme had bought just a couple of days ago. In a manner of seconds, he came up sputtering curses and threats.
“I’m going to get you one day Isabella Marie Cullen! If it’s the LAST THING I DO!” He yelled, stomping back inside--dripping wet—leaving us all to laugh hysterically.
“I better go check on him…” Rosalie sighed, getting up and going back inside. Alice and Jasper went inside also; Alice talking animatedly about Jane and how perfect she was for Daniel.
“Jane? Who is Jane?” Esme asked. Bella launched into a full discussion, only pausing when Esme had questions. I sensed the direction this topic was coming to---more girl talk. I decided to go visit Dan at work…heaven knows it would be much more interesting there.
“Out of a 20, your change would be 3.75.” I said, handing the change to an old man, who readily accepted it. “Thank you for shopping at Barnes and Noble, have a good day.” I smiled, putting all three books in the paper bag and handing it to him.
“Thanks, you too.” He said gruffly before leaving quickly. I sighed and leaned against the counter. I was working the cash register until seven o’clock today and it didn’t look like today would be too busy.
I looked around, seeing no other customers and saw Tina from Register 5 staring openly at me, with a look of longing on her face. I groaned inwardly---I didn’t need Edward’s mind reading power to know that Tina had a crush on me. What was it with these girls? They were all for the looks…it was so awkward.
I looked back down and ran a hand through my hair. Gosh, I need to get a life---ha, no pun intended…
Working at the bookstore was a fun job. I loved being surrounded by books, and although I wouldn’t tell my family--except Edward--this job made me feel human. I felt like a normal teenager again, and I liked it. I mean, I wasn’t on the extreme like Rosalie or anything, I just liked being around normal people without worrying about being so different.
“Hi Daniel!” I heard a high-pitched voice next to me. Be nice, be nice! I thought to myself as I turned a bit to see Tina grinning at me.
“Hey Tina. How are you?” I asked politely. Good work, Daniel; now get away before she pounces!
“I’m good. So, are you going to Kevin’s bash on Friday?” She asked, an almost hopeful look in her eyes.
“I’m sorry, his what?” I asked. What’s a bash? As in a fight?
“Uh…a party, duh.” She exclaimed as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
“Ah…well, I don’t think so. I’ll have to see if I’m busy or not…” I said, not wanting to be rude by outright saying “Of course not, you dimwit! Do I look like someone who goes to high school bashes?”
“Oh, well, all right then.” She said, looking away. I saw a man coming down the aisle and made a split-second decision to save Tina from getting fired.
“Manager---get to your register.” I whispered, looking down as she scurried off. It was against regulation to leave your cash register unless it was your 10 minute break, so Tina would have gotten fired…see, I’m a nice guy!
“Ah, Daniel, just the boy I was looking for!” Tom said in a booming voice, patting me on the shoulder.
“Hey Tom,” I mumbled. The last thing I needed right now was for the manager to be looking for me.
“There’s a pile of books on the floor in the Mystery section, clean that up for me, won’t you?” He asked, pushing his glasses further up on the bridge of his nose.
“But sir, I’m not allowed to leave my register…”
“You can when I tell you to! Now hurry up, go on!” He said, pointing to the mystery section. Like I already didn’t know where it was? I thought. Right as I turned the corner, I saw a familiar face walk into the store entrance.
“Oh jeez. What are you doing here?” I asked him.
“Oh, I can’t visit my brother at work? Am I not welcome at the community bookstore these days?” Edward smirked.
“I’m sorry, but the last time Emmett visited me, he nearly got me fired.” I shuddered at the memory.
Emmett Cullen + Bookstores = trouble.
“Are you seriously comparing me to Emmett?” He asked, both eyebrows raised in disbelief.
“Nah, I’m sorry.” I replied, finally reaching the section. I felt my eyes widen when I noticed the hundreds of books on the floor and the empty shelf they must have fallen off of.
“Oh great. No wonder he sends me to do the job.” I muttered, setting to work. Before I could turn around and ask Edward to help me, he was off, probably in a whole different section.
It took me quite a while since I couldn’t use my vampire speed, but when I got the last book on the shelf, I sighed and took a few steps back. Making sure everything was put in order, I turned around and froze in place.
A beautiful girl was browsing the books in the fiction/fantasy section. A girl with gorgeously long black hair and green eyes that I couldn’t stop thinking about.
I was reading the back cover of what seemed to be an interesting novel when I heard a thought that roused my interest.
Jane Shuler…. I knew that it was Dan’s thought. I waited for more, but it seemed as if his thoughts had disappeared after thinking her name. I glanced around the corner of a bookshelf, and saw Jane standing there, reading the names of several books on the shelves. I watched as she paced back and forth down the rows.
I had to stick my head out a bit more to see that Daniel was standing a few shelves away, staring at Jane with an awed expression. His thoughts seemed to become more coherent, and I listened again.
What is she doing here? Oh wait, she’s probably looking for a book. Right. Uh…should I go talk to her? Or maybe just go back to the register. She looks busy, she probably doesn’t want to be disturbed. I’ll just---Edward!
He had seen me and was now glaring at me. Edward? Come here, don’t you dare--- Before he could finish his thought, I strolled out and caught Jane’s eye. She spun around to face me, pushing her hair back out of her face.
“Oh, hey Edward, what are you doing here?” She asked, surprise coloring her tone.
“I’m watching a movie,” I replied.
“Huh?” She asked, both eyebrows pulling together in utter confusion.
“I’m just joking, Jane. We’re in a bookstore, I’m looking for a book,” I said, chuckling. She laughed also, and I saw Dan clench his fists and he had seemed to stop breathing. I smirked at winked at him, though Jane didn’t notice.
“Hmm, I didn’t think you would be the read-a-book kind of girl,” I said, walking a little bit closer.
“I guess people can surprise you. Yes, I enjoy reading in my free time. And since I moved here, I seem to have more free time, so I guess that equals more reading,” She smiled, pulling out two books from the shelf.
“You don’t seem to be the read-a-book kind of boy either…” She said.
“Well, I don’t read too much…I actually came to see my brother.” I grinned, seeing Dan’s jaw drop and his thoughts begging me not to continue. “Maybe you met him? Daniel?”
“Ah, yes; I have actually. What would he be doing here?”
He actually works here,” I said, watching her eyes light up with interest. “At the cash register, usually.”
Her eyes glanced around carefully, and she blushed when she noticed me watching her.
“Oh, there he is,” I said mildly, nearly smiling at the vehemence of Dan’s icy glare. Jane spun around to look, and Dan gave a huge sigh, tilting his head to one side.
“Jane? I see you met my annoying little brother?” He smiled. I scowled back at him; I’m the older one! Maybe not physically, but I’ve definitely seen more years than him!
“Daniel…it’s nice to meet you again.” Jane smiled.
Wow, her smile is so…beautifully beautiful. Wait, that doesn’t make sense… Dan was thinking.
“Oh, Daniel, I forgot to tell you,” I replied, coming up with, in my opinion, a brilliant idea.
“What?” He asked me, not looking away from Jane.
“I can’t come to that concert with you this Friday -- Bella and I have a date that she’s really excited about. Sorry!” I grinned.
Uh, ok, is it just me, or does he not look very sorry at all? Jane thought. I dropped my smile and put on a more composed face.
What? What concert? What is he---Holy cheese! Are you serious, Edward?! Are you trying to set me and Jane up?! WHO PUT YOU UP TO THIS! I AM SO ANGRY WITH--- Dan screamed at me mentally, eyes popping and fists clenched. He was going to attack me later, but I had been a vampire for longer and knew that I could handle him – and if worse came to worse, I could always have my telekinetic wife – who I knew would support me on this – bail me out.
Suddenly, he went really calm and then smiled. Wait, what just happened?
“Jane, since my brother just decided to leave me hanging, would you like to accompany me to said concert?” He smiled, and although he looked nonchalant, his thoughts were saying how nervous he was. Jane, on the other hand, was having a serious inner conflict.
Me? Him? Did he just ask me out? Whoa…wait, Jane! No guys, remember? But he’s so hot. What would Dad say? He’s so nice and understanding, and he still wants to be my friend even though I cried my eyes out in front of him! But I barely even know him, I mean, his family thinks he’s amazing, but what if---
“Sure, why not?” Jane said, contradicting her thoughts, a light blush rising in her cheeks. She was smiling and he was smiling, and then I was smiling. Yes, we were all smiling pretty happily. Suddenly, my phone started vibrating and I pulled it out, seeing Alice’s name on the caller ID. Oh my…
“So I should probably go pay for these books, huh?” Jane started to walk towards the cash register line and Daniel was following her.
“I’ll just be going home now, it looks like Alice needs my help with something,” I said before ducking out of the store and heading to my car.
I am a very good brother…I thought as I drove home to feel the inevitable explosion that came in the form of a small vampire named Alice Cullen.
“Out of a ten, your change would be 2 dollars and 30 cents,” I said happily as I found myself putting Jane’s new books into a bag. She was smiling and I couldn’t help but grin back. I felt some sort of magnetic pull towards her; it was if she were hypnotizing me with those magical green eyes of hers.
“Thanks so much, Daniel,” She said. God, I loved the way she fingered one of the curls that fell to her shoulder.
“You’re welcome…so, uh, the concert. Do you really want to come with me?” I said in disbelief. What would a beauty like her want to do with a beast like me?
“Of course. Oh, what band is it?” She asked. I went blank…Edward hadn’t thought of that little detail.
“Uh…it’s a surprise. You’ll see when we get there,” I made up quickly.
“Oh, all right. Sounds like fun,”
“So…I don’t really have all the details just yet,” I sighed. I was really bad at this dating thing.
“Here, I’ll give you my number. You can call me later, ok? I’ve got to get home before my dad does,” Jane said. She picked up the pen we used for credit card receipts and a piece of paper that was sitting next to the register.
After she wrote down her number and name, she looked up and smiled before handing me the paper. While I was picking the paper up from her hand, her fingers brushed against mine. I felt an electric shock go through me and I could see that Jane was just as startled.
“Whoa,” She murmured. “So…I’ll see you at school tomorrow?”
“Yeah, I’ll see you there,” I replied. She picked up her bag and headed towards the store exit. Before she left, she turned around once and smiled at me before leaving. I gave a long sigh and pushed my hair back again.
I picked up the slip with her number on it and saw that there was writing on the back. When I turned it around I could see that it was a list of five books that belong in a certain section. Our manager always gave us those to quiz us on our knowledge of the book sections.
It was the romance section. Sometimes, kismet happens.
I was under my car, staring at a bolt that just wouldn’t budge. The damn thing was so stubborn! I grabbed the wrench from my toolkit and started to yank at it until it finally started to move towards the right. Reveling in the small victory, I grinned and pulled it harder. A bit too hard. The wrench suddenly bended a little in my hand and I frowned.
“Shit, another wrench ruined.” I murmured under my breath. You’d think I had a handle on my strength after five years of being a freakin’ werewolf, but no. Of course not. At least I can handle my temper.
Suddenly, I heard a scream that could only come from a few yards away, meaning in my house. I got up---forgetting I was under a car----and hit my head really hard. While cursing, I slid out and ran inside, seeing something I would never forget.
I burst out laughing as I took in the sight in front of me. Ally was standing in the middle of the kitchen. The formerly blue and white kitchen that was now covered in reddish goop. She had a shocked expression on her face and was holding a stirring spoon. Everything, everything, was covered in tomato sauce, including my wife.
“JACOB BLACK! Are you laughing at me?!” Ally screeched. I suddenly went quiet under the intimidating glare she was giving me. I was more than a foot taller than her, but when she gave me that look, it was like I shrank.
“No ma’am…I just---I’m sorry!” I whined. Ally looked down and around her precious kitchen and her lips twitched. Suddenly, she was laughing as hard as I was earlier. We both laughed louder and I walked over and grabbed her into a tight hug where she squealed.
“Jake, I’m getting sauce all over you!” She laughed as I whirled her around in circles. I put her down and looked into her eyes, giving her one of those big wolf grins she loved.
“I don’t mind. I love sauce,” I whispered, sticking out my tongue and licking a blob of tomato sauce off her nose. She grinned back and leaned into me, brushing her lips against mine. I launched myself into the kiss, closing my eyes in happiness.
Picking her up, I set her down onto the counter that was covered in gooey sauce without breaking the kiss. She wrapped her arms around my neck and her legs around my waist. Abruptly, I felt her doing that really amazing thing where she traces her nails onto the muscles of my back and I moaned softly into the kiss.
She left my lips and kissed my jaw, trailing up to my ear. I let out another moan as she started to lightly nibble on my ear and I put my hands on her hips, drawing her closer.
“Ally…” I whimpered. She was completely in control. She could drive me incoherent by the way she smiled at me, so when it came down to her pleasuring me…yeah, I was pretty much a puddle---a very happy puddle at that. I could hear her chuckling as she pushed me away slightly. My eyes popped open and I remained rooted to my spot. She tried to unsuccessfully push me away and then dropped her arms, sighing.
“Jake, I want to go take a shower. I feel gross covered in tomato sauce!” She whined, smacking me playfully on the arm. I growled lightly and picked her up, running up the stairs to our bathroom. Needless to say, we had fun…
Now that Rachel had moved back from college, she was living with Dad in our old house, and Ally and I scrounged up enough money to buy a really nice two-story house next to the beach after we got married. We’ve been married for exactly 10 months and 16 days in counting, and I swear I’m the happiest werewolf in history. Yeah, everything was pretty perfect and I loved life. Wow, I sound like a cliché waiting to happen.
When we were clean, dressed, and appropriately decent, Ally and I went back downstairs with identically huge grins on our faces. Damn, that was one of the best parts of my life: sex---not just any sex---sex with Alyson Black.
We both worked on cleaning up the kitchen (which took forever) and I threw out the trash. I went back inside to see Ally looking into the mirror that was next to the living room, with one of her eyebrows furrowed. I came up behind her and put my arms around her waist, staring into the mirror also. She smiled slightly, but it made me kind of sad that the smile didn’t reach her eyes like it usually does. She was clearly upset.
“What’s wrong, baby?” I asked softly, leaning my chin onto her shoulder.
“Jake…” She whispered. “I’m gonna be fat!”
“No, you’re pregnant. That’s not fat, that’s a baby. Our baby…” I said happily, placing one of my hands on her flat tummy.
“I know…” She sighed, smiling her full smile now.
“I wonder what it’s going to be like…being a dad. What do you think we should name it?” I asked excitedly. Ally turned around and led me to the couch. We sat down and I put her into my lap---it was an impulse now, something I didn’t have to think about.
“Well, it would depend on it being a girl or a boy, I guess.” She said. “It’s a little too early for that.”
“I know, but it’s fun to think about.”
“Yeah. We’re going to have to tell everyone else, you know. Who should we tell first?” She asked, looking up at me. I thought about it for a second.
“Well, how about this? We’ll have a little party, and then when everyone’s together, we’ll announce it!” I said. She grinned and nodded.
“I think that’s an excellent idea. I’ll order pizza, I don’t feel like cooking…” she sighed, leaning into my chest. I put my arms around her and put my chin on her head.
“So…do you want a girl or a boy?” I asked casually, running my fingers through her beautiful brown hair.
“Hmmm…I think I want a boy. I mean, a girl would be great, but a boy…that would be the sweetest thing ever.” She said. “What do you want?”
“I think I want a girl. It’d be nice to have my own little baby girl I could protect for the rest of her life. Boys are too rowdy. Though, it would be cool to have a son---like someone I could teach everything to. I don’t know!” I said. I was so excited, I couldn’t even decide. “I’d just be happy with either.”
“Yeah, me too. I hope it looks like you, with the hair and the chin, and definitely the smile.” She said, tracing her thumb onto my lips.
“No! I want it to look like you. That adorable nose and those sparkly brown eyes. And of course, don’t forget the voice.” I smiled, kissing her nose again. She was about to say something else, when I heard a car drive up on our driveway. I cocked my head to the side, and heard little footsteps running out of the car, and bigger footsteps following.
Sure enough, the doorbell rang about two seconds later, and Ally got up and went to get it. I followed her and when we opened the door, someone was waiting for us.
