Prologue (Jasper’s POV)
Emily Adeline’s eyes clouded over. A swirling white mist blocked the sparkling gold from view. The entire room went still. Not a single vampire was breathing as they waited for the vision to pass.
A quick but violent shiver shuddered Emily’s tiny body. Her breath grew ragged and frantic as her face twisted in agony in response to whatever she was seeing. Her hands curled into fists. Then it was over.
Emily’s eyes cleared, the gold showing once more. Her hands relaxed but her shoulders remained tense. Her eyes were wide and wild with fear. I resisted the urge to rush forward and comfort her.
“A war is coming.” Emily’s soft voice broke the tense silence, “No matter what we do or how hard we try to avoid it, a war will take place on January 5th. The Voltri are sending an army of highly dangerous newborns. They’re sending many but the werewolves will aid us in defeating them. Though we will win victory over the newborns we will lose one from our side, but only one. That one will cause much mourning though. I could not see who it was, only that it was a Cullen.”
Fear washed over all of us as Emily’s words sunk in. I could feel waves of it crashing over me. I tried to send out some calmness to the others but it wasn’t working very well so I gave up. Something bad was coming. One of us was going to be destroyed. The question was, who?
Chapter 1: A Visitor
It was a sunny day in Forks. This meant that all of us Cullen vampires were at home. Bella and Edward, who had been married for a year now, were up in their room. Bella finally had complete control of her powers now that she’d been a vampire for a year.
Bella’s powers were very interesting. She could stop anyone from using their powers at all. Bella could also read and speak to people with her mind.
Carlisle and Esme sat on the couch, their hands entwined and their heads together, whispering in each other’s ears. Rosalie sat cross-legged on the floor, painting her nails and watching Emmett and I wrestle with a slightly amused expression on her exceptionally beautiful face.
Alice watched us also, jumping up and down, cheering me on and squealing with delight as I came closer and closer to beating Emmett at wrestling for the first time in quite a while.
Alice let out a little whoop and did a silly victory dance as I finally defeated Emmett. I laughed at her exuberance. This was one of those days when everyone is just relaxed and happy.
“Best two out of three?” Emmett challenged.
“You’re on!” I grinned.
We got into our positions to begin wresting again when a soft knock echoed through the house. We paused and straightened up. I glanced at Alice who had a confused expression on her face.
“Who is it?” I asked.
“I don’t know. I didn’t see anyone coming.” She said.
I blinked in surprise. Why hadn’t Alice seen them? Was it a werewolf? I tried to see if they had any hostile feelings but I felt nothing.
“I can’t feel any emotions coming from them!” I exclaimed. I breathed in deeply through my nose, “I don’t smell anyone out there either.”
Carlisle, Esme, and Rosalie had all stood up and I suddenly became aware that Edward and Bella were now standing behind me. I noticed them exchange a surprised glance then Edward turned back to the rest of us.
“Neither Bella or I can hear their thoughts.” He said.
“Maybe they left.” suggested Emmett.
We all stood staring at each other for a moment. Finally Alice glided to the door and pulled it open. I half expected nobody to be there. There was someone there however.
A tiny girl, even smaller then Alice, who looked maybe 17 or 18, stood there. I knew at once that she was a vampire, yet she was standing out in the sunshine without glittering. How was that possible? Maybe that was one of her powers.
The girl stood a tiny 4’9”. Her dark, glistening, silky brown hair fell straight and perfect to her waist. Her eyes glittered gold like ours, marking her as an animal blood drinker. Her eyelashes were thick, dark, and so long they lightly brushed her cheeks when she blinked. She was very thin and delicate looking yet she possessed an air of authority. She reminded me of Rosalie though they looked nothing alike. It was just that she also had an unremarkable beauty.
The girl looked familiar. It was like I’d seen her before. Her face tugged at my memory, but I couldn’t remember where it was I’d seen her.
Her full, smooth lips lifted into a smile and she spoke with an almost unnoticeable hint of a Texas accent. Her voice was like a dozen tinkling wind chimes as she said, “Hello. Would you mind if I stepped in for a moment?”
“Of course not.” Alice answered, stepping back and gesturing for the girl to enter.
She moved so smooth and quick that I didn’t catch any of her motions. Next thing I knew she was standing next to me.
“Hello Jasper.” The girl whispered to me, “I can’t believe I’ve finally found you.”
“Do I know you?” I asked.
“Yes Jasper Whitlock I think you do.” She smiled at me.
I stared in surprise. Nobody had called me simply Jasper Whitlock in a long time. I struggled to remember who this strange girl was.
“The last time we saw each other was in 1861, when you left for the army. I thought you were gone forever.” Tears were suddenly streaming down her face. Wait, vampires can’t cry. So why was she crying then?
“Oh Jasper why can’t you remember me?” she whimpered, her smile now gone and all of us staring at her in shock, “My name is Emily Joy Adeline.”
I gasped as it hit me. All of my memories of her came flooding back. Dusty clothes and giant grins as we hid from our mothers as little kids. Then as we grew older, stifled giggles and whispered secrets. When we finally vowed our love for each other at age 16 there was hand holding, moonlit walks, and warm kisses stolen in the dead of night out under the stars. Our last kiss the day I left to join the army was imprinted into my mind. It had been so sweet and loving.
An indescribable passion came over me as all of these memories crashed down on me. I stepped forward and wiped away her tears with the palm of my hand.
“Emily.” I whispered my voice full of love.
Her face brightened and the tears stopped as her golden eyes bored into mine. “You remember!” she whispered back.We stood frozen for a moment. I was hardly aware of my entire family staring at us in shocked silence. Suddenly Emily flung her arms around my waist and I hugged her back, pulling her closer to me. I stroked her silky dark hair. It felt good to have her back in my arms once more.
