Chapter 3: Pains of the Past

The next few days were difficult for me. I watched Jasper’s mind as his memories of me began returning. I could see that Jasper was falling in love with me again.

What hurt was that he didn’t want to love me. He wanted to love Alice and Alice only. I respected that and I tried not to make things more difficult for him. I pretended not to know about the battle raging on in his head. I ignored that he watched me with adoration everywhere I went.

As weeks passed his thoughts were no longer of me. It hurt me that he no longer thought about me anymore but I was relieved for many reasons. One reason was that Alice loved him as just as much, and maybe even more then I did. I didn’t want to hurt her. I really like Alice and we seemed to become more like sisters everyday now that she realized Jasper wasn’t ever coming back to me.

I was beginning to really enjoy my life as a Cullen. Esme was so loving and motherly and Carlisle so kind and understanding. I found myself getting along very well with Emmett, who was very likeable and funny. Both he and Edward became more and more like brothers to me as we teased and laughed with each other.

Bella and Alice were like my sisters now. I enjoyed shopping, talking, and just being with them. Even Rosalie got nicer and nicer. We’d even sit and talk sometimes. Life was good. It had a little bit of happiness and love for the first time since I lost Jasper. Then I had a vision that shattered my cheerful little world.

I was sitting on the couch watching TV with Rosalie and Emmett when my cool skin began to grow very warm as it always did when I had a vision. I had a feeling that it was going to be a bad one.

“No, please no!” I gasped, jumping to my feet.

Emmett and Rosalie looked up at me in surprise. Emmett switched off the TV. All of the other Cullens rushed into the room. I could hear them all tense up and stop breathing as my eyes clouded over. Then I was swept away in my vision.

Aro, Caius, and Marcus were arguing together in a stone room.

“I say that we send an army of newborns to test their strength. We should send about a hundred or so of them.” Marcus suggested.

“My dear Marcus, I don’t want to kill our friend Carlisle!” Aro exclaimed.

“Aro, they’re growing stronger and stronger. They’ve had two more vampires with extraordinary power added to their group now that Bella and Emily have joined. They could grow strong enough to overthrow the Voltri and do whatever they want.” Caius pointed out.

Aro sighed in defeat, “I guess you’re both right. If they can defeat the army we send them then they are to strong and we really need to begin worrying. When do we send the newborns?”

“They should reach Forks on about January 5th.” Marcus answered, “We’ll send some of the guard to clean up afterward.”

The vision faded and another one began.

Cullens and werewolves were viciously ripping newborn vampires apart. The clearing rang with snarls and shrieks. A large Sandy wolf was in the middle of pulling apart a black haired, red eyed vampire when another newborn, this one large and muscular, raced toward him.

I watched as I turned toward him, my eyes wide with horror, and screeched at the top of my lungs, “Seth!!!” Before the wolf could turn around a streak of white flew between the muscular newborn and his target. I couldn’t tell who it was. It could have been me for all I knew. I just knew that it must be a Cullen because I saw a glint of golden eyes before that vampire was only a pile of white and the newborns was lighting it on fire.

My vision wouldn’t let me see anything but the pile of smoking ashes. I heard a roar of fury above the rest of the noise. Screams and sobs of people who had lost a loved one now mingled with the sounds of battle. A Cullen was dead.

When the battle ended and thick smoke filled the air, I heard a voice whisper, “We may have won but we’ve lost a very special vampire.”

The vision ended and I was jolted back to the present time. It was silent for a moment as I looked around at the curious and afraid eyes of my new family.

“A war is coming.” I whispered, “No matter what we do or how hard we try to avoid it, a war will take place on January 5th. The Voltri are sending an army of highly dangerous newborns. They’re sending many but the werewolves will aid us in defeating them. Though we will win victory over the newborns we will lose one from our side, but only one. That one will cause much mourning though. I could not see who it was, only that it was a Cullen.”

Fear crossed everyone’s faces as they took in what I had said. I could tell that Jasper was sending out waves of calmness but the fear stayed in everyone’s eyes.

“We must begin preparing.” Carlisle finally said, “One of us needs to go fill the werewolves in.”

“I will. I haven’t met a werewolf yet.” I said.

“Alright.” Carlisle agreed, confident in my abilities to protect myself from them.

Bella gave me directions to the home of the pack leader and his wife, who was named Emily just like me. I thanked her then turned to leave when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned back around to find Jasper standing right behind me.

“Be careful.” He said quietly, “Werewolves are dangerous.”

“I think I can handle a bunch of weak dogs.” I managed to mumble before my throat closed as powerful emotions swept over me.

I longed to throw my arms around Jasper’s neck and kiss him passionately. I managed to restrain myself and settled with briefly wrapping my arms around his waist. He pulled me tightly to his chest.

I broke his hold and turned once more to dash out the door before my emotions overwhelmed me. I wanted so badly to run back to him. I wanted to spend the rest of eternity in his strong arms.

Jasper wasn’t mine though. No matter how much I wished it. He was Alice’s and that was permanent for the rest of time.

Jasper managed to grab my hand before I could leave. “I’m so sorry.” He said.

Didn’t he see that he was breaking me even more by acting like he really truly cared about me! The sincerity in his eyes was to much. All of the pain that I had been keeping bottled up burst out.

I collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down my face as I sobbed and screamed uncontrollably. I heard the cries of the other inhabitants of the house ring out as my gift made them feel my pain.

I felt like I was falling to pieces. It was if my tiny body simply couldn’t hold so much pain and it was going to explode. I gasped and clutched at my sides to keep from falling apart. I struggled to get a hold of myself. I tried my hardest to push the pain back behind that thick vault door in my mind.

I finally numbed the pain and sat up, my face expressionless, drained of all emotions. Alice was still screaming upstairs and I could hear Esme sobbing tearlessly on the other side of the house.

Jasper was slowly getting up from the ground. He looked at me with a face full of horror. I stood up also.

“Sorry I let my pain escape like that. I should have better control of my emotions.” I said to him in a dull, flat voice over Alice’s screams and Esme’s sobbs.

I’d learned how to dull the pain. It would take the rest of them a few more minutes then me to calm down.

Japer’s reaction to my words surprised me. Anger flared in his eyes and his hands balled into fists. “I’m sick of this Emily! It’s entirely my fault! Stop blaming yourself gosh dang it!” he roared. Then he spun around and punched a giant hole in the wall.

I just stood their in absolute shock. I had NEVER seen Jasper this angry and had definitely never heard him yell like that. The entire house rang with silence now that Alice and Esme had finally managed to get over my pain.

“I... I’ve g-got to go.” I stammered.

“No.” Jasper’s voice was gentle again.

“But... but, I, um, need to go tell the werewolves.” I mumbled pathetically.

“I can’t stand holding this in any longer.” He said, “I can’t stand lying to you, Alice, and myself.”

“What do you mean?” I asked, but I knew exactly what he meant. I can read minds.

“I love you. I’ve been hiding my thoughts from you, Edward, and Bella. I still love you Emily Adeline.” He whispered. Everyone in that house heard him. From upstairs I heard a soft whimper come from Alice’s room. I couldn’t do this to her.

“I’m not going to let you do this. What about Alice?” I exclaimed.

Alice was suddenly standing at Jasper’s side with a tortured expression on her face.

“Alice.” Japer murmured sadly.

“Who do you think you are Emily? Do you really think that you can just waltz right into my house and mess up my life?” Alice growled.

“Alice...” Jasper started to say.

“Now would be a good time to not talk Jasper.” Alice interrupted.

Jasper fell silent. Alice turned her vicious glare back to me. She looked terrifying, like a true vampire.

“You think that you’re so perfect. Nobody worries about me anymore because now you’re the tiniest most vulnerable little vampire. Nobody needs my visions anymore because they have your accurate visions and huge packet of powers. You’ve even taken my Jasper and that REALLY ticks me off!!!” she hissed.

“Alice I’m so sorry.” I whispered.

“Oh you’re going to be.” She snarled, “I treated you like a sister. I tried to be nice because Jasper said that there was no way he was going back to you. I was actually starting to LOVE you like a sibling! I can’t stand it anymore though. You’re nothing mut a perfect, know-it-all brat. Now get out of my life and leave me, my family, and the love of my existence alone. Drop your stupid little innocent act and GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE!!!” her voice rose to a scream at the end of her speech.

Suddenly her fist was colliding with my jaw. I was sent flying across the room and crashed to the floor. My head cracked the stone tiles. Jasper stood with a horrified and shocked expression at how very out of character Alice was being. I slowly stood up.

“Well Alice, I suppose that you couldn’t make it any clearer that I’m not welcome her. I really am truly sorry that I ever came. Just so you know, I wasn’t going to let Jasper leave you. I did, and still do, love you like a sister despite the fact you hate my guts. I would never do that to you. I love all of the Cullens like my own family and I’ll miss you all dearly. I’ll go deliver that message to the werewolves and then I’ll leave and you’ll never see me again. I really am sorry.” I whispered.

Gosh Alice was right. It did sound like I was putting on a perfect little innocent act. Every word was true though. Before anybody could say anything else I was gone, already on my way to LaPush.
