Bella lay crumbled at the bottom of the tree where Victoria had flung her. Her body was bent and twisted and there was blood everywhere. Her eyelids fluttered and she gasped for air, her breath coming out in a high-pitched wheeze. Several bones were broken and it sounded like her lung had been punctured. She coughed and spat up more blood. She cried in pain.

Edward was at her side in an instant. Flames rose up behind him where Spike was destroying what remained of Victoria.

Edward reached down and cradled Bella in his arms. She winced in more pain as he moved her.

“Shh,” he said, “don’t worry. I’m here now. Everything will be okay.”

She cried. “Edward, it hurts.”

“I know,” he said, his voice breaking. “It’s my fault – I shouldn’t have put you in danger like this. I’m so sorry, Bella. I’m so sorry. Please forgive me.” He wasn’t human but tears still pooled in his eyes and he began to sob. “I’m so sorry …”

“Edward,” Bella croaked.

“We’ll get you to the hospital. We’ll call for help.” He turned blindly and yelled for someone to call 911.

Buffy knelt by their side. Her eyes examined Bella’s crumpled and broken body. “Edward, I don’t think …”

He roared at her. “Just do it!”

“Edward,” Bella sobbed. “It’s too late.”

“What?” he said, his eyes tormented. “No, we’ll get you help.”

Bella sobbed again, screaming in pain. “Edward, it’s too late. I can feel my body …” She choked on another sob and more blood trickled past her lips.

“You have to do it,” Buffy said fiercely. “It’s the only way, Edward.”

“What?” he said, his eyes searching for answers.

“It’s the only way to save her,” Buffy said. “You have to bite her. You have to change her. Change her now.”

“No, I won’t do that,” he said, tears trickling across his cheek.

“You have to,” Buffy said. “You were planning to do it anyway … just do it now.”

“No,” he said again, shaking his head. Even Bella’s spilt blood couldn’t distract him from his agony. “Not like this. It’s not supposed to be like this.”

“Edward, it’s the only way.”

He shook his head again. “No – not like this! There was still more she needed to do – more time for her to be human, to be alive. She hasn’t said goodbye to all those things, all those people.”

“And she won’t get to unless you change her,” Buffy said. “Edward, she’s dying.”

“It’s the only way.”

“Edward—“ Bella’s broken, bloody hand reached up toward his face. “Please, Edward.”

His breath caught in his throat at her plea. He could see it was true – she was dying. She was broken and dying before his eyes. She was slipping away faster than he realized.

“Do it,” Buffy said. “Do it now.”

Edward swallowed, choking back his tears and his agony. “I love you,” he said to Bella. “I’m so sorry.”

He bent to her throat and bit.
