The new screams of pain mingled with those that had already been escaping Bella’s lips. Coupled together with the trauma, she wasn’t aware for long. After a few moments, Bella slipped into unconsciousness. Edward was grateful for that, at least. He lifted her broken body and gently carried her inside, his silent tears still falling. His body heaved with sobs. He grieved for her life. He grieved for her humanity – now gone.
Buffy and Spike followed him inside silently. They watched as Edward carried Bella’s body upstairs and laid her on her bed. Watched as he wiped the blood from her face and neck and hands. His hands fumbled with the buttons of her blouse, but when Buffy tried to help, he pushed her away. He took a deep, unnecessary breath and undid the buttons – slipping Bella out of her bloodied clothes. He cried at the sight of her lovely, broken, naked body. He cleaned away the rest of the blood, washed as much as he could from her hair. He went to her closet and found clean clothes and dressed her again. When she was clean again, he laid soft kisses across her face and arms, all the time murmuring her name and whispering “I’m sorry. I love you.” And sometimes it sounded like one, sad sentence – I’m sorry I love you.
When the phone rang downstairs, Buffy left silently.
“Swan residence,” she said softly.
“She’s not available,” Buffy said. “May I ask who’s calling?”
“It’s Doctor Cullen – Edward’s father,” said the voice.
Buffy’s eyes widened. “Oh no,” she gasped. “You don’t know.”
“Know?” he said. “Know what?”
“I’m so sorry,” Buffy said. “I thought you might know – like Edward.”
“Who is this?” Dr. Cullen said, growing impatient.
“My name’s Buffy Summers. I’m the Slayer.” The voice on the other end of the line breathed, understanding. Edward had already filled his family in on the visitors. “Bella’s been hurt. Edward had to—“ She couldn’t finish the sentence.
“I understand,” Dr. Cullen replied. “I’ll come pick them up.”
“I’m sure Bella would be more comfortable here,” Buffy said in protest. But the doctor had already hung up.
“Her father will be home soon,” Spike said from the stairs. Buffy turned, startled. “We’ll have to tell him something.”
Buffy shuddered. She’d witnessed a lot of horrors as the Slayer. But the events of the last two hours were among the most shocking – and not because of the death.
Her eyes wandered to the fridge. Taped to the door was the answer to Spike’s question. Buffy rummaged through some drawers and found some paper and a pencil. She went to Bella’s backpack and found some of the girl’s homework.
Copying the penmanship as best as she could, Buffy scrawled a note on the paper.
Dad – I decided to go to the senior trip after all. We’ll be gone for a few days. Don’t worry – there will be adult supervision, so no underage drinking. See you soon.Love, Bella
Spike peered over her shoulder. “Looks good to me.”
Buffy sighed. “Let’s hope her father buys it, too.”
As she was taping it to the fridge next to the original flyer, someone knocked at the door. Buffy opened it and let Dr. Cullen inside. She turned to fetch Edward from upstairs, but he was already standing there, Bella in his arms and a bag flung over his shoulder.
“Follow us,” Edward instructed Buffy and Spike. They didn’t argue.

Edward kept Bella in his room at his family’s house. The others knew to stay away. She remained unconscious for the first 24 hours or so – but partway through day two, Bella began screaming again. At dawn on the third day, she blacked out again.
The next time she moved, she was dead.
