Carlisle was still thinking both plans through, Edward listening to him when the cell phone rang. Carlisle picked it up and answered. “Hello?” He said into the phone, pausing when he got a response. “I see. Well yes, that certainly does change things quite a bit doesn’t it?” Carlisle’s voice never betrayed him. His face never faltered. The only two people who knew what were going on were Edward and Carlisle himself.

“What is it?” I asked, thinking of all the possibilities.

“Victoria.” Edward spat the word, not trying to hide his disgust. I froze. With everything else that was going on lately I had completely forgotten her. She was still trying to avenge James. Would the madness ever end? I reached towards Edward, holding his hand under the table as I leaned into him. This was too much at once. Before I could finish collecting my thoughts Carlisle hung up then and filled everyone in about the wolves’ discovery of Victoria’s trail. She had gotten through them now and was heading our way, towards Forks. She’s going towards Charlie. I thought tightening my grip on Edward’s hand.

“How?” I whispered and Alice froze too, stuck in a vision.

“Alice what’s wrong?” Edward asked, surprising me. Shouldn’t he have just read her mind?

“My, my visions. They’re slipping. All I can see is nothingness. It’s like someone placed a big white sheet around me and I can’t get out of it to see anything!” If she were human, I’m pretty sure she’d be crying right now. Alice relied everything on her visions. It was her way of knowing everything was going to be all right. And now they weren’t working.

“Alice? Are, are you ok?” I said to her, getting up as I did so to place my arm around her. She didn’t answer, too shocked to say anything.

“We’re going to work with the wolves against Victoria. Anything she says or does we will know about.” He didn’t include that we wouldn’t be able to see Victoria’s moves, without Alice’s visions.

Suddenly Edward stopped, and a weird expression crossed his face. “No way. Not now!” he cussed before saying “She’s here.”

Everyone came to life. They quickly formed a blockade, me at the center. We watched the front door, just waiting. Behind us the glass wall shattered with a crash. Everyone jumped around knowing who had destroyed it. Victoria was standing there with three other vampires. She had tricked Edward and Alice, gotten through their powers, and was now here to kill me. It seemed a battle would ensue no matter what I tried.

“Hand over the girl and we’ll be on our way if you don’t mind. In fact, I’m feeling a little giving. If you hand her over now no one will have to die except her.” She paused. “You might even get the body back. If you comply we won’t ever bother this little town or your coven again.” She said smiling sweetly. I realized I had never heard her voice before. It was sickly sweet, like candy you’ve added way too much sugar to.
