He stood hulking, a black mass silhouetted in the door way, red eyes gleaming and teeth glinting. He took a deep breath, instinctively shifting forwards as he did so. She cringed further into the corner. Venom dripped from his teeth, welling up into the back of his throat.

“I know you're there, Isabella.” Her breathing, and heart stopped for just a moment, as though she could fade into the darkness, as though he couldn't hear her eyelashes brushing across her cheekbones as she blinked. As though couldn't hear the very blood rushing through her veins.

“I can smell the adrenaline Isabella. Not only are you there, you're scared. You're right to be scared, you know. I am scary.” The gleaming teeth formed into a cruel grin. She was trembling uncontrollably now, her shoulders wracked with invisible sobs of fear, hopelessness and a hint of joy. This was the way to go wasn't it, much less painless than the other ways she could have gone, much less painless than living was. A small laceration, then you passed out from blood loss.

“I am scared, but not as much as I think I should be.” Her voice cracked. His brow twisted in confusion, they usually couldn't find speech by this point. They were usually to far gone into the fear to do anything but sob and shake and screech and scream shrill ear-piercing screams.

“How scared are you?” A small humorless giggle escaped her, though it was really more of a small rush of air by the time had left her mouth.

“What, would you like me to rate how petrified I am on a scale of one to ten?”

“Sure.”

“Probably like a five, it's been worse.” Her mind roamed for brief seconds over James and Phoenix, her birthday party, the all encompassing fear right afterwards, before he had left.

“That's a tad bit depressing. I always thought I was more scary then that.”

“You are very scary, just relative to other things I've experienced, not so much.”

“Well, no matter, we, my dearest Bella, are going on a little trip.” He was across the room in seconds, and then he towered over he still shaking form, once again a figure from her nightmares. It was effortless for him, as he swooped down and grabbed her, caging her to his broad chest with arms as thick as thick as her waist. Then they were moving disconcertingly fast, she heard the front door slam, but not until they were in the onyx car, leaving. She strained her next to catch a final glimpse of the place she had come to consider home, and saw Charlie standing tousled in his illuminated window.

A ripping sensation, far less drastic then the one he had induced, but fierce all the same began in her chest, watching Charlie's eyes cloud with fear and confusion as she drove away.

“Where are we going” A whisper breaking the dark stillness of the car.

“Italy.”

“Italy?”The wheels were turning, starting to click, to understand.

“Volterra, Italy. That is where your fate will be decided.” The Volturi.
