Back to Bella’s POV

I was waiting for Mike by the food line. I felt the stares from half the cafeteria, looming down on me.

I looked around and then that’s when my eyes caught him. He was sitting towards the back at a table with 4 other kids. His hair was a tousled bronze color and he was extremely good looking. His eyes were a golden onyx, which seemed to mesmerize me. I blushed under the unabashed way his eyes raked over my form.

I turned away, utterly embarrassed. Mike showed up then, and led me to an almost full table. He introduced me to the people there.

“That’s Jessica, Lauren, Angela, Tyler, and Eric.” Mike said, pointing to the individual people.

I gave them an awkward little half wave and said hi, before sitting down to eat.

The girl to my right, I think her name was Jessica, immediately set to questioning me.

“So I heard you’re from Arizona?”

“Yeah, Phoenix actually.”

“Wow, big city. Forks must be a big change for you.”

“It is...” I never finished my sentence because she interrupted.

“I don’t get it though. I thought girls from down south were supposed to be tan and pretty and stuff.”

The girl on her other side elbowed her, “What?” Jessica said. “I was just asking her a question.”

Of course you were. I thought. You just pinpointed one of my more self conscious traits. AKA I look like a ghost and am... how do you say it... PLAIN!!!!

I never would say that out loud though.

“That’s just a movie thing. Only a very few people actually look like that.” This was somewhat a lie. My old school had been over flowing with hot looking tanned blondes. I just was never one of them.

“Oh,” Jessica sounded let down. “Well, why did you move up here?” The raging curiosity was not concealed in her voice.

I realized she was probably a gossip, and just wanted to know if the rumors about the new juvenile delinquent were true. I decided to burst her bubble.

“I moved up here to live with my dad and brother.”

“Really?” Jessica looked disappointed, obviously not the story she wanted. “Then why were you driven here in the Chief Swan’s car?”

“Well, I didn’t know how to get here, and my brother goes to a different high school so I couldn’t go with him.”

“You’re brother goes to private school? Wow he must be hot or something!”

I almost snorted the milk I was drinking. “Ha, Jake at private school? That’s a good one.”

I think she was going to ask me another question but she didn’t get the chance cause the bell rang. I gratefully ran from the cafeteria. I really did not want to go to the rest of the day of school, but I had to so I trudged off to biology.

The kid who would sit next to me in biology had left earlier today, which meant I had the whole desk to myself. I was happy that I had already been in advanced biology in Phoenix. Now I could recycle all my old essays easily.

Unfortunately, Forks High School required four years of physical education. This was going to be my personal hell. As my mom and Jake continually pointed out, I was clumsy to the point of disabled. I was lucky enough that I didn’t have to change today, so not only was I saved the pain of falling, but so was the rest of the class. I didn’t just trip while playing; I brought people down with me.

As soon as the bell rang, announcing the end of the day, I rang back to the main office. I dropped off my slip and hurried outside. Charlie was already there with the cruiser. (Thankfully) I slid into the car, barely missing my head on the door frame.

Charlie asked me how my day had been. I answered honestly, that is was fine, uneventful.

Personally, I just wanted to get back to the Rez and relax. Forks was going to take some getting used to.
