8. Hanging out

I wasn’t sure why I agreed to hang with him. After all, I had just met him, but there was some kind of magnetic force between the two of us. There was also the fact like he was hiding a secret. I was beginning to wonder what that secret was.

I had no idea what I was still doing here. I had seen Bella run up to Angela and heard their conversation. Bella really had no place to go and I wanted to be near her.

I had tried to follow her home the other day, but she had gone on the reservation. I knew now that she was one of them, the Quileutes, the only ones who knew who we were, or rather what we were.

I saw her walk dejectedly to a table in the school yard. She probably was trying to figure out what she was going to do. I don’t know what came over me but I tossed Alice my keys and started walking over to her.

I sat down at the table, she was at. “What are you doing here?”

“Stuck until later. My brother is home really sick.” She said, her voice giving away the worry she felt.

“Well, how about we hang out?” I asked. I was hoping she said no, that she kept that lush smelling blood out of my reach, but another part of me wanted to be near her, wanted to hold her and kiss her. I was beginning to understand why Emmett, Jasper and Carlisle spent so much of their time thinking about their mates.

She smiled, “Sure.” She said. “Well, do you want to stay out here in the rain? Or go someplace dry?”

I really had no idea where we could go. There was no way I could take her to my house, and I really didn’t know any place where teens hung around here. Luckily, Bella saved me from any embarrassment.

“The school library is open until 5. How about we hang in there till it stops raining?” I quickly agreed and walked with her into the small school library.

A librarian sat behind the desk, in grossed in what seemed to be a grocery store smut novel. The thoughts bouncing around her head surrounded the two lovers in the plot. I realized this was probably on of the books Tanya had written.

Bella sat down at one of the computer tables before pulling out her notebooks. I joined her, grabbing out my books too. I inhaled deeply; her scent was so much more arousing now that her hair was damp from the rain. There was another smell there too, that wasn’t hers, but I couldn’t place it.

Bella’s POV

I still didn’t understand why we were hanging out. I started doing the biology homework, but couldn’t concentrate. Edward’s golden eyes seemed to distract me plenty.

I finally gave up on my homework. I looked over at him. He was looking at me but seemed to be thinking about something very hard.

“Are you having trouble with a homework problem?” I asked.

He shook his head, the bronze hair moving perfectly with his head.

“No, I was just trying to think of the perfect conversation starter.” He said a hint of tease in his voice.

“Oh, really? And are you having any luck with that?” I teased back.

“Nope, so I was just going to get out my ipod.” He was laughing as he reached into his bag and brought out a new black nano ipod.

He offered me one of the headphones. “Want to listen to it, also?” I moved into the chair next to him, placing the ipod headphone in my ear.

He quickly turned on the music and I was amazed to hear Unwritten Law, hardly any of my friends had listened to them, but they were my favorite band. I started to sing along,

“Actress, model, dancer, whatever, I’ve been watching you, I’ve been wanting you.”

I realized what I was doing and immediately blushed. My mother had always told me that singing was never one of my strong points. I was in the back row of our middle school choir.

“It’s okay. I like your voice.” I blushed even harder. He was being to nice about it.

“Sure,” I said grinning, “I could become a singer if I wanted to.”

We both laughed after that and conversation seemed to flow really easy after that. I noticed though, when I got too close his jaw would tighten slightly. I didn’t think he knew that I noticed, but I had. I still hadn’t figured out what his secret was, but I was fine just to let it go.

The clock ticked time away; it was 4 o’clock and then 4:30 then 5 till 5. I finally stopped our conversation for a second.

“I should probably call home and see if I can go home or if I need to find a place for the night.”

“Of course.” I looked around dumbly.

“Is there a pay phone around here?” I asked shyly. He didn’t answer but just handed me his cell phone.

It was one of those complicated flip phones that I could never open. I looked at it contemplating how to open it. Edward just sighed and flipped it open in one movement for me.

I dialed the phone and waited for a while it rang. Billy finally picked up. “Hi Dad.”

“Bells, I’m glad the school gave you the message.”

“Is Jake still really sick?”

“He’s feeling better now. You can come home if you want to.”

“Okay, I’ll be home shortly. Do you want me to pick something up for dinner?”

“That would be great.”

“Okay Dad, I love you, Bye. I handed Edward back the phone.

“Is your brother doing okay?”

“Yeah, Billy thought he just had some stomach flu, but he said Jake was doing better.”

“That’s good.”

I nodded as I swept all my stuff together. We walked back out to the parking lot until I was standing next to my bike.

“Do you need a ride home? I think we might both be able to fit on the bike.” I said, being polite.

“Thanks for the offer.” He said, smiling a crooked smile that took my breath away.

“I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

Just as I was about to walk off the sidewalk, I felt his hand grab my arm. I turned back to face him. He didn’t say anything, but he leaned down and kissed me softly on the lips. He pulled back quickly, smiling.

“I can’t wait to see you tomorrow.” He said before walking back under the overhang.

I stood still, the taste of his lips on mine was still lingering. I took a deep breath before climbing on my bike and returning home.

I watched her climb onto the bike and speed away. I had no idea why I had just done that. I hardly knew her, and there I was kissing the one girl that I wanted so badly to kill.

I took off running; I wanted to clear my head.

All too soon I was home again. Luckily everyone appeared to be busy by their thoughts so I quickly sneaked up into my room.

I shut the door behind me quietly, only to see Alice sitting on the couch. Daintily she stood up and thought about the vision she just had. I grimaced, she had seen me kissing Bella.

“Its not nice to be a peeping tom, Alice.” I scolded.

“As if you aren’t.” As if to demonstrate her point she started to think about what she and Jasper had been doing last night in bed. I growled softly at her. That was dirty play. All she did was laugh.

“Personally, Edward, I don’t care what you were doing with her. (I knew that was a lie) But if you don’t mind, next time you come home from school, could you not smell so much like a werewolf.”
