2. Ready For Forever? [Chapter o2]

We all sat around the kitchen table. Alice looked nearly meditative. She paused before speaking to me. “Bella… When Jane went back and told them when you were being turned, they gained interest. They had seriously considered taking you down there.”

In response, Edward growled. I thought I was going to lose all self composure.

Alice took a breath before continuing. “They intend to be here, to watch you through your transformation.”

“No doubt they’ll try to ‘help’…” Emmett growled bitterly.

I was still so confused. What did this mean? Would they try and take me?

“They’ll want you to feed,” Carlisle explained. Edward growled again, holding me tighter. Esme looked at me, and you could see the fear in her eyes.

“We’ll have to leave.” Edward’s voice shocked me. Did he really plan on leaving!? “Go as far away from here as we can. Leave everything. The wedding can be private, secluded…” His eyes misted over as he drifted into thought.

Carlisle shook his head. “No, we cannot just leave without even letting her parents know. Once we disappeared as well, suspicions would be raised. And we cannot leave her parents in the dark.”

Edward growled low in his throat. “We cannot risk them knowing! The Volturi will pick their minds, and then leave everything they don’t want to ROT!”

I felt moisture in my eyes beginning to spill over. It caught me off guard. Was I really crying?

Edward grunted and kissed my jaw. “I’m sorry…” He whispered.

But the tone of his voice hinted that he wasn’t only sorry for this, but for everything. For meeting me, for leaving me, for coming back. He was truly sorry for ever putting me in danger.

I felt my lower lip tremble, so I did my best to stop all of the tears. “Why do we have to leave?” Everyone stared at me.

Jasper sighed. “I don’t think you understand, Bella. Once they’re interested, they’ll never leave us alone. Leave you alone. They’ll always be there, watching your progress, waiting for the right time to take you.”

I sat in silence, trying to find the answer. But it eluded me.

Alice walked over and scooped me into a hug. “I don’t see any danger yet, they’re just mildly interested,” she whispered into my ear, trying to comfort me.

“But what will it matter? Once I’m like you, it’ll be my choice.”

Esme shook her said sadly. “Once you turn, your personality will…well, it’ll be there… But… First, you’ll be… different. And they will take any opportunity to strike, to get what they want.”

“THEY WON’T HAVE HER!” Edward’s anger broke me again, and I felt new sobs passing through my body.

“Nobody is going to take her Edward,” Rosalie said finally.

I swallowed hard. “Do we have to leave? I mean, we were going to eventually… Why not have the wedding and do it first? Then once they leave, we can take our flight.”

They all looked like there was something wrong with that… but none spoke. As if the idea was sinking it.

“And if they catch us, we can say why we left, and not fear their suspicions.” I was somewhat proud for even thinking of any idea. It was simple… But I still hadn’t spoken with Charlie, Renee, Phil…

Alice’s eyes slowly widened, as she began to see more…

We all waited in silence, except Edward, who was seeing through her mind. After a moment, she looked normal again, then nodded. “It’s settled. That is our best choice.”

Carlisle nodded. “Yes, now let’s all relax please. You too, Edward.”

Suddenly, I felt incredibly warm, and happy. I felt reassured that everything would be alright. Edward scooped me up.

“Where are we going?” I asked, still smiling like I was crazy.

“Charlie’s.” Edward had an odd look on his face.

He opened the door of his Volvo, letting me in. He climbed into the driver’s side and started the car. It hummed to life without any hesitance. I could feel the happiness wearing off, and my fears start to take control. “Why?” I asked.

“To start packing.”

I looked over at him, but he ignored me as he pulled onto the road. “Edward, please don’t worry. I’ll be fine. Alice saw it. You saw it.”

He nodded slowly. “We can’t take any chances. We’ll get all your things today. Charlie will assume it’s for college. He won’t ask questions.”

I nodded slowly, giving up. I had this coming. It’s what I asked for. I knew that there would be dangers, problems… But it still hit a sore spot when I thought of leaving. We pulled up into the driveway. I climbed out and slammed the door shut. I found the spare key, and unlocked the door. I walked inside, and then grabbed Edward, wrapping my arms around him tightly. He kissed the top of my head, and then we went upstairs to my room.

I remembered how many years of my life I’d spent here. How many summers. I knew, deep down, this would be the last time I ever returned to this place… I inhaled slowly, taking in the familiar scent.

“The suitcase is stored in my closet.”

Edward pulled out the black suitcase, and we began. I decided what’d I take, and what I’d leave.

Edward’s arms slowly wrapped around me, tucking me into his cold, marble body. Then I knew why. Tears were streaming down my face, endless patterns of sobs and whimpers. I buried my face into his chest. I had to stop this. I had to stop making him feel bad. I silently promised myself he’d never hear me complain. Ever.

“Bella…” He whispered into my ear, sending goose bumps down my entire body. His voice was like an angel’s, though technically, he was the exact opposite in literal terms. But he was my angel. The one who kept me going. The one who supplied me with a reason to be. I chewed on my lower lip.

“Hmm...” I murmured.

“I love you…” I opened my mouth to speak, but he took advantage. He lifted me with his strong arms, catching my lips in a familiar embrace. I felt like the room was spinning. Though his lips were like cool marble, they were the most comfortable things I knew.

He pulled away and smiled before speaking. “Anything else?”

“Another kiss would be nice…” I smiled, leaning up for another. He pulled his head back and placed a finger on my lips. I frowned.

“We’ll have time for that later Bella, I swear. But for now, try not to be so… tempting.” I smiled at the word he used.

He looked disapprovingly at my suitcase. I wasn’t planning on taking a lot… “Alice will have too much fun shopping with you.”

I nodded in agreement. “Yes, she will…” I sighed. Alice was crazy about shopping, and getting me dressed up. Sometimes I felt like a life size doll to her. My mind wandered…

The amazing BELLA DOLL! A life size human play mate! Pull her hair and she curses! Throw some eyeliner on her and –

Edward’s chuckle interrupted my thoughts. Sometimes I could swear he could hear what I was thinking. I pushed him off and folded my arms. “What?”

“Nothing…” He grinned crookedly, and scooped me up with one arm. Then he grabbed my suitcase with the other.

“Let’s… what do some of you say… blow this joint.” He smirked again.

I snorted at his attempt at a joke. He placed my suitcase in his trunk, and then climbed in after me. I stared dreamily at the house, remembering old memories…

“DADDDDD!” I let out an earsplitting scream. My lips were fixed into a scowl, my eyebrows arched furiously. “DADDDDDDD!” Charlie came rushing up the stairs and nearly kicked open my door. “BELLA! Bella, what’s wrong!?” I pointed at my mouth, then at my plate. Charlie had fixed me a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He looked confused. “Bella…” “I LOST A TOOTH!” I opened my left palm to reveal a front tooth, doused in red. “Your peanut butter was CRUNCHY.” He looked dazed. “But I though you liked crunchy…” I scowled, then realized how disoriented he seemed. “Don’t worry… I’ll put this in a baggy, and I’ll put it under my pillow when I get home. I’ll clean up the mess.” I had spit the chewed bits of sandwich onto the bed sheets. “Why Bells? The tooth fairy can get you here too.” I shook my head slowly. “Nah. I don’t think the tooth fairy likes rain…”

Suddenly, the car lurched to stop. I blinked. Had I been lost in my memories the whole ride? Edward opened my door, and offered his hand. I climbed out and walked towards the house. Edward’s arm snaked around my shoulder, pulling me in. I rested my head on his shoulder, letting out a sigh.

Once we entered the house, I felt drained. My heart was pounding. The fact that I was leaving Forks forever started to sink in. I sat on the couch, and laid out. Edward sat down on the floor in front of me. “Don’t leave…” I begged, hearing the slight panic in my voice.

He nodded slowly, grasping a hand. “Just sleep now Bella.”

I was running to a familiar, russet colored face. His eyes widened. “BELLA!” His familiar voice rang through my ears, as if calling me home. Home to the flaming skin, the welcome hands. “Jacob!” I yearned to embrace him, let him know I still wanted to know him. But it was if I was muted, because his lips still moved furiously, trying to find me. “Bella! PLEASE!” I continued to run, but I was getting no where. I was getting frustrated, tears streaming down my cheeks. “Bella… I’m lost without you. I’m in pain…” A dark shadow towered over him. I flung out my arms, trying to reach him, to warn him, but the shadow engulfed him, and he melted into it. But his voice rang out. “I love you, Bella.”

My eyes shot open, and I felt sweat dripping down every inch of my body. In the distance, I could hear the howl of a wolf. It sounded so sad, so pained… It took me a minute to realize where I was. It was dark out, and I was lying in Edward’s bed. I knew he was there the instant his cool fingertips gently traveled down my arms.

“Awake?” he whispered.

I swallowed hard, and then nodded.

He gently kissed the back of my neck. “You kept shouting, screaming. Just something about shadows, and running… Want to talk about it?”

I shook my head furiously. No more Jacob talk. I’d promised myself. It just made Edward doubt himself, and I couldn’t have that.

“I’m fine,” I lied.

He nodded, knowing better than to force a subject.

“Go back to sleep, Bella.”

I shook my head, and then turned so my body was pushed into his. I slowly brushed my lips against his, before diving in. I felt his hands tighten around me, pulling me in. I felt his tongue gently trace my lips.

Then he pulled away. “Sleep.” His demand was strong, but I could hear his weakness. I would’ve argued, but I knew I was tired. I gave in, and sank back into his arms, listening him hum my lullaby.

I woke up in the late afternoon. I blinked slowly. The wedding was tomorrow. Fear sank into me. But just as quick as it did, the excitement came.

Alice popped into my room. “Bella, dear. WAKE UP! We have sooo much to do!”

I blinked. “WherezEdwad?” I’m guessing she couldn’t understand, but guessed what I asked.

“Edward’s with Emmett, Jasper, And Carlisle. He’s not allowed to see you today.”

I frowned. She suddenly tugged me out of the bed. Everything went white, and I felt light as a feather. I hate head rushes.

Alice grinned. “Okay, we’re trying on the dresses one more time to make sure there’s nothing wrong. We’re getting our nails and toes done, then ….”

I silently tuned her out. Was tomorrow really my wedding? I was still in shock. It had all flown by really quickly.

“- then we’ll stuff ourselves, and it’ll all be done!” She smiled, not realizing I’d ignored half of the things she’d just said. I didn’t want to hurt her feelings, so I nodded.

“Let’s go….” She held up a finger, and then raced out. Before I had to even inhale, she was back. She held out a dark blue sweater, and a pair of clean jeans. Without arguing, I quickly slipped out of my old clothes, and into the fresh clothes.

She grabbed my hand. “OOOH! We get to take my new car!” Her eyes gleamed with excitement. I groaned. Today was going to be long. Very, very long.

She drove nearly 160 MPH, getting to Seattle as fast as she possibly could. We parked outside of what looked like an expensive nail salon. It had big red arches, and across it read ‘Nail Heaven’. I grimaced. What a tacky name. I glanced over at Alice as she eagerly grasped my hand again.

“I thought you believed vampires weren’t allowed in heaven.”

She rolled her eyes, obviously not amused at my attempt at a joke.

“Bella, you’re going to have fun today, whether you want to or not.”

I smirked. “Oh yeah. Fun against my will. What could be better?”

Alice ignored me and pushed open the door. Immediately, perfume hit my nostrils. It smelled like a mixture of rose and cotton candy. My eyes watered. It was a rather strong scent. Alice had the same look, but wiped it off before approaching the man at the counter. He looked up; I could tell that his internal jaw just dropped.

Alice batted her eyelashes, looking stunning. I glanced at myself in a mirror, feeling very plain. “Excuse me, but my friend here is getting married. We don’t have a reservation, but this is very, very important.”

She smiled, all of her perfect white teeth showing. The man blinked a few times before flipping through a small, red leather book.

He looked disappointed. “There’s no slots open today but…” Alice mad a pouty face, her lower lip jutting out.

The man smiled stupidly. “But uhh, I think Mrs. Janlin can reschedule.”

Alice smiled approvingly. “Thank you so much! You have no idea what this means to us.”

He led us to two seats. Alice sat down first, and then commanded me into mine. Soon, people were scrubbing away at our toes and feet. I kept giggling, and accidentally splashing water on the woman doing my feet. She gave me angry looks, but didn’t speak up. After our pedicures, Alice insisted we get manicures, and fake nails. I looked down at my chewed, nasty fingernails, and then agreed.

Next, we stopped by and checked up on the wedding cake. It was adorned with false lavender flowers, yellow flowers, and pink flowers. It was extremely detailed. Alice smiled.

“Do you like it!?” I could tell she had spent many hours describing exactly what she wanted. What she knew I would want.

I nodded. “It’s…perfect. Just like everything else.”

She smiled. “Next are the bridesmaid dresses.” She’d already had them all picked out, and wanted to see if I would approve… Though she knew already. She covered my eyes, and then pulled her hands away. “What do you think?”

It was a simple, lavender colored dress. It had spaghetti straps and a tight top, but fell loosely to the mid shin. The colors were suspiciously coordinated with the cake.

I smiled. “And again…”

“Oh Bella!” she cried, wrapping her arms around me. “I’m so glad you let me do this. I’ve never had so much …” She kissed my cheek, smiling again.

The rest of the day was a blur. A long blur. We went everywhere, making sure everything was perfect for the wedding. Alice did all the talking. All I did was nod when I agreed, or when my name was mentioned. I wondered what Edward had been doing all day, and if he’d been through as much torture, though I doubted he had.

We pulled up into the garage, and Alice cut the engine. She hopped out gracefully, while I tumbled out, barely keeping myself from falling. She smiled.

“Where’s Edward?” I asked.

Alice shrugged. “I told him he wasn’t allowed here.”

She pulled out her cell phone and tossed it at me. I raised an eyebrow, just as it began to ring. She smiled coyly, and walked inside.

I leaned against the armored Jeep as I answered. “Hello?”

Charlie’s voice greeted me. “Hey, Bells.” He swallowed. “So… tomorrow’s the big day. Are you nervous?”

Of course I was nervous. “Yeah, dad. I am. Are you?” I knew he was terrified of walking me down the aisle, giving me up to someone else. Especially when that someone was Edward Cullen. Just thinking his name made me miss him.

“Bells, I know it’s late, so I’ll just say this then let you go. I want you to know that even though this was not my first choice for you, I’ll still trust in your judgment. I love you so much, and I know that you’re not a baby anymore. It’s hard to let go… But I know I have to. Edward’s a bright young man, and will take care of you better than I could probably even imagine.”

I felt shocked. Emotion was a hard thing for Charlie.

I smiled, feeling moisture sliding to my eyes. “I’ll always be your baby girl, dad.”

He grunted, and I knew that was the max amount of emotion he could handle for one night. “Well, I’ve gotta go. I love you Bells.”

“I love you too dad.”

The click in the phone indicated he had hung up. I smiled.

After convincing Esme, Rosalie, and Alice I wasn’t hungry, I ran upstairs to go to sleep. I routinely showered, brushed my teeth, blow dried my hair [under Alice’s command], and then climbed into bed. I sighed. Charlie could be such a good father. It was hard for him to show his true feelings sometimes, but when he did… I yawned, feeling my eyes giving way to sleep.

I sat in the fishing boat, watching Mr. Black and Charlie. They were chatting about fishing, and other random things. I scowled and turned my back to them, and stared at the murky water. I hated these stupid fishing trips. I wanted to go home.

“Daddddddddd,” I began to whine, “Can we PLEASE go home!?”

Billy chuckled, and Charlie shook his head.

“No Bells, we’ve barely been out here for 30 minutes. Fishing is an art, and you need patience to master it.”

I jumped up and stamped my foot into the boat, shaking it. I probably scared away any fish that were around. I grabbed a fishing rod, and stared at the rusty hook. “What’s so great about it, huh!? Stupid rod, stupid string, stupid HOOK!”

I grabbed it, getting ready to fling it into the water. Suddenly, I felt it dive into my skin, and I let out a blood curdling scream. It had completely plunged into my palm.

Tears rained down my face as I cried. Charlie had let go of his pole and immediately came to my rescue. The concern shone in his eyes.

I awoke to Alice poking me. “Wake up Bella! It’s time for you to get marriedddd!”

I felt an odd rush of pleasure. She smiled and skipped off to the bathroom, no doubt she was getting the rollers and curling irons warm. I yawned, remembering the dream I’d had last night. I sighed.

The next sound I heard was enough to wake me up. A loud scream from Alice. I jumped up and ran to the bathroom, to see her eyes wide.

I began to shake her, completely afraid. “ALICE!?”
