1. You Wish You Were Me

Rating 4/5   Word Count 2010   Review this Chapter

Drip... drip... drip. That was the first sound I heard as soon as I opened my eyes. It was another gray morning in the little town of Forks, Washington.

My name is Danielle Walker and I am seventeen years old. I have black hair but that's because I dyed it. My real hair color is auburn. I have blue green eyes and stand at about 5 ft 4 in.

Today was my first day in a new school as a junior. My mom decided it was time we left our big-city ways behind and moved somewhere better. So, a month later we sold our house, packed up, and left Chicago to live in Forks, Washington.

I got up from my bed and started rummaging through my closet. After an hour of digging around, I decided to wear my favorite black skinny jeans, a "The Used" t-shirt (they are my favorite band), a black sweatshirt with pink paint splattered everywhere and my rainbow Vans. Black, purple and hot pink were the usual colors of my wardrobe.

I grabbed my purple backpack, the only memory of my friends. They signed it before I left so it was covered in silver sharpie writing. I got a chance to talk to Abby, my best friend, on the weekends and she'd be coming to visit during summer. I had eight more months to wait until her arrival.

Breakfast was not an option today so I walked out the front door holding a copy of Twilight and headed for my car. I had a specially designed, metallic purple 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS with silver flames that I got a year ago, for my sixteenth birthday from my dad. My parents got divorced ten years ago and he moved to Texas. The car's flashy, yes, I know and I asked my mom if maybe we should sell it. It wasn't a necessity back home. I lived pretty close to the school but my mom said no. Now I'm actually thankful that she refused because now that I live here I'd hate to walk to school in the rain.

When I arrived at the school I saw a lot of kids staring at me as I tried to find a parking space (which wasn't that hard). When I got out, I realized that, here people didn't own things like nice cars. That is until I saw a silver Volvo that I parked right across from.

I grabbed my backpack and my book and headed for the main office. When I walked in, I saw a woman in a purple shirt sitting behind the desk. Creepy I thought, why does she remind me of Ms. Cope? I looked at the nameplate and my breathing stopped...‘Ms. Cope'. I finally found my voice and came closer.

" Hi, my name is Danielle Walker. I'm a new student." I said, my voice a bit shaky. I hoped she took my tone as a sign of nervousness being here for the first time.

" Oh hi, it's so nice to finally meet you. The whole town has been talking about your family's arrival. Welcome to Forks." She gave me my schedule and a map of the school showing the quickest routes to each class.

I thanked her and walked out of the office.

After a slow day, it was finally lunchtime. I bought a pizza slice, a Coke, and an apple. Just as I was about to sit down at an empty table, a boy came up to me. He had blond hair, light blue eyes, about six inches taller than me, and a pleasant smile on his face.

" Hi my name is Mike Newton." He introduced himself. " You're Danielle right?"

" Hey, yeah and I prefer Dani." I answered.

" Well I was just wondering if you wanted to join me and my friends for lunch. It's better than sitting alone." He gestured to a table filled with people.

I looked around the lunchroom. Maybe I'm just being paranoid I thought. Maybe the name was just a coincidence. I haven't seen the Cullens yet. Maybe it was just my imagination.

" Sure Mike. Thanks."

When we came up to the table everyone looked up and smiled.

" I'll introduce you to everyone." He offered. " That's Jessica, Lauren and Angela." He pointed to each of the girls as he said their names.

Jessica had short curly hair and a talkative personality. Lauren had long blonde hair and a " I'm better than you so deal with it" look on her face. I didn't like her already. Angela was a shy girl with light brown hair and a pleasant face, which was at the moment buried in a book.

" Now over at there are Ben, Tyler and Eric." He continued. The other boys stared at me like I a model on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

I choose a spot between Jessica and Angela to avoid the boys and sat down. Everyone was really nice and friendly, with a few exceptions.

After lunch, it was time for my least favorite class, Science. I was one of the first students in the class. The teacher, whose name I forgot as soon as he said it, made me wait until everyone else arrived to find a seat for me.

The warning bell rang and a crowd of students walked into the class. Among them was a tall, bronze haired boy. I didn't get a chance to look at his face until he sat down at a desk near the middle of the class. When I did, I wished I hadn't. He's perfect, just like Edward. There is no way any of this is real. I'm hallucinating and he's just another really good-looking guy. I thought. I noticed that there was only one available spot left and it was right next to him.

" Class, we have a new student." He addressed everyone when the bell rang.

" Please introduce yourself Miss." This time he was talking to me.

I'm usually an outgoing person but for the firs time in my life I wanted to crawl under a rock and stay there until school was over.

" Hi, my name is Dani. I moved here from Chicago about a week ago." I looked at the floor as I said that.

" Welcome to the class Dani, " the teach said. " I see there's only one seat left so that will be your seat." He handed me a large book and I went to take my place next to the boy who coincidentally looked like Edward Cullen.

" Hey you're the new girl right? Danielle Walker," The boy whispered to me because the teacher started the lesson.

" Yeah, I prefer Dani." I whispered back

" My name's Edward Cullen. Welcome to Forks." When he said that, all color drained from my face. I knew he noticed so I looked away.

" Are you alright?" he asked, truly concerned, " you're pale."

" I'm fine." I replied. "Don't worry about it." I noticed that my copy of Twilight was right next to me so I shoved it in my bag before he noticed. Too late, he did.

" I can see why that might... surprise you a little." His expression was amused yet at the same time worried.

" Huh, yeah. I'm just a really big fan of her work, and obsessed with all things involving vampires and werewolves." I realized I was babbling too much so I decided to shut up.

" Really?" this seemed to amuse him even more. It was like I was missing out on an inside joke. He looked me in the eyes and smiled that perfect crooked smile. I forgot to breathe for a moment.

As I tried to pay attention to what the teacher was saying I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, that Edward kept staring at me. Trying very hard to concentrate on the lesson I decided to take notes.

I opened my binder and took out my notebook. As I closed my binder it slammed down a little too hard and a gust of air blew in Edward's direction. At that same moment he went rigid and completely froze. Oh no it can't be, I thought, please don't let it be me. If the reason that Edward looked like he was going to go insane was because my blood had the same effect as the book, then it's trouble.

The bell rang and I all but ran out the door. Time for the last class of the day, gym. I hate sports. I've hated it since I was a little girl because I am ‘physically challenged' as my friend put it. Never in my life was I able to throw, catch, hit or kick like a normal person.

I walked into the gym and up to the coach. Because it was my first day he said I didn't need to play so I sat and watched the other students play dodge ball the whole period. When the bell rang I went to the office to turn in some applications Ms. Cope gave me earlier. When I opened the door I saw Edward talking to her. I couldn't make out what the conversation was about but at that moment he turned around and quickly made his way out the door.

I handed in the papers and walked to my car. To my surprise the Volvo was still standing right across from me. As I was pulling out of the spot there was a light tap on my window. I turned and saw a tiny girl, about my age. She had black, short hair, chalky skin and gold eyes. Everything about her was perfect. Could she be Alice?

I rolled down my window and she smiled her white teeth barely seen against her pale skin.

" Hi I'm Alice Cullen. You're Dani right? Sorry this is an awkward time but I wanted to welcome you to Forks." She said. It took me a moment to reply after hearing her name but finally I managed to speak.

" Yeah that's me. Thanks." I replied.

" How do you like it so far?"

" It's ok I guess. A lot different from home."

" Oh? Where are you from?" she inquired.

" I just moved from Chicago."

" Wow I've been there, I think it's -" before she got a chance to finish her sentence the Edward, I noticed revved the engine in the Volvo pulled out and left.

" He did not just do that." Alice scowled. " I'm going to kick his ass when I get home."

" I guess I can give you a ride if you want." I heard myself say before I could even realize what was to follow. If she agreed it will mean that I will have to go all the way to her house and possibly see Edward again. I really didn't want to after the way he glared at me today. I swear if looks could kill I'd be dead.

" Oh really that would be great. Thank you so much Dani." She giggled and got in the front seat. "Nice car by the way." She looked at it admiringly.

" Thanks. Now, just tell me which way to go."

As she began giving me instructions a million thoughts flew through my mind most of them revolving around meeting Edward again. I really hope I wouldn't see him again until school. At least there will be witnesses if anything happens.

I gripped the steering wheel tighter as the car took me closer and close to the house with every passing mile.
