When we got back to the house, Carlisle asked to speak to me. I followed him upstairs to his study, and although Edward protested, he saw Carlisle’s thought process and let me go.

“Bella, I think it is best that you know the full depth of the situation." Carlisle started, once we were seated across the massive desk. "You are a sensitive, and that comes with a lot of benefits, as well as a lot of complications. You are extremely powerful; therefore others of our kind will see you as a threat. The Volturi especially wish to have you on their side—otherwise you pose a hazard to the peace they’ve held for so long. You have to be on your guard—once word gets around that there is a sensitive here, everyone’s going to want to be on your side.” He looked at me as he said all this, analyzing my reaction.

“So, if everyone wants to get on my side, why is that a problem?” I asked, knowing that Edward was listening in.

Carlisle thought before he spoke. “I’m not saying it is a problem, but I just want to let you know. You have only seen half of our world so far—the good half, and even that is filled with trouble. There are many more vampires out there—and they're not all good. I just want to let you know…” He stood up and walked over to me, embracing me in a tight hug. “I also would like to welcome you to our family. We are so happy to have you with us—especially Esme and I. Esme, for the past couple of years, has worried herself sick over Edward’s happiness; now, with you, he is a completely different person. He has never been happier…” He smiled, and I could feel the happiness radiating of his skin. My dead heart swelled at this comment, and I quickly thanked Carlisle and went down to my beloved Edward.

I embraced him as I got down the steps, and Edward leaned back to look at my face, analyzing my expression.

“Don’t worry, I am going to be fine…” I said, rolling my eyes. Edward nodded, and pressed his lips to mine. He didn’t speak, but waves of approval and affection rolled off him like waves.

“Bella, did you know that I am the happiest man on earth right now?” Edward said. We were up in his—no our—bedroom, Edward sprawled across the couch; me stretched out on the ground.

“Did you know that I am the happiest girl on earth right now?” I countered, staring at his perfect, god like image perched atop the sofa.

“No…” Edward stood up and walked towards me, sinking into a cross-legged position; his face inches from mine. Holy crap—he was gorgeous. No matter how many days I spent with him—his beauty struck me just like that first day.

It was then that things began to unravel.

Suddenly, Edward stiffened, and leapt into a standing position. He whirled around and flipped me up onto his back, taking the steps four at a time and urgently calling the family.

“Edward, what is going on?” I asked as the rest of the family gathered around. Alice had the same panicked expression on that Edward had, and I guessed that she had seen something. Everyone had a flurry of questions that they rattled off and the noise quickly grew. The extreme emotions crushed me and I pressed my fingers to my temples, crying out.

“EDWARD! ALICE! Calm down!! You are killing Bella!!” Jasper yelled over the commotion and a wave of calming spread through the room. I cradled my head in my hands, willing the panic to die down. Edward finally looked at me, gauging the panic in my face, and allowed Jasper to calm him down. Eventually, the chaos died down and Carlisle jumped in.

“Edward, Alice. Would you care to explain what you saw?”

Edward finally found his voice and hurriedly explained the mass chaos. “Alice—she saw Thomas, and he had all of us, all, that is, except Bella. He was after Bella—hunting her! Oh, Carlisle—we have to get out of here, and…”

But Carlisle cut him off. “Wait—who’s Thomas? And what does he want with us?”

Edward stared at him with wide eyes before speaking. “He’s an addition to the Volturi—but he wasn’t with them in the vision. He is after Bella—he wants her to join his clan, so that his power will be doubled. But it was supposed to happen within the hour! Oh, Carlisle—we have to get out of here now!!” And he began pulling on my wrist, toward the looming darkness outside. I was towed in silence for some seconds before I found my voice.

“EDWARD! Wait—we can’t just leave!! What about Charlie? And Renee? And the wedding? What about forks?” But Edward continued to half-drag me to the door, ignoring my string of complaints.

Eventually we made it out the door—after a bit of reasoning with Edward. But that’s as far as we got.

A pale figure emerged from the darkness, revealing two golden eyes.
