(Edwards’s point of view)

“Hello.” Came a deeply seductive voice from the shadows.

Thomas’ tall form emerged from the darkness—his golden eyes piercing. But I refused to look at them.

“Don’t make eye contact!” I hissed, pulling Bella behind me. Emmett, Jasper, and Carlisle took defensive positions beside me.

Thomas chuckled. “Oh, don’t worry Edward. I don’t mean any harm. That is, unless you are unreasonable…” A wicked grin flashed across his his face, exposing pointed white teeth dripping with venom. I growled--a deep, guttural snarl resounding from deep inside my chest. Emmett growled along with me.

Carlisle’s face was unreasonably calm. “What brings you to our home at this hour?” He inquired, keeping his gaze safely averted from those piercing golden eyes.

“I only wish to borrow Miss Swan, for a little tête-à-tête.” Thomas looked at me as I said this, fixing his gaze on mine, willing me to look at him. But I kept my eyes on the trees behind him.

And quite possibly keep her… His thoughts rang out.

I growled again, baring my teeth. Thomas only laughed.

“Oh yes, the Volturi warned me of your little gift…” He slowly reached out with one hand towards Bella, grazing her skin, testing my limits. I growled again and lashed out at his arm. He laughed again, and I looked up to his face.

Bad idea.

He was looking straight at me, and I felt my gaze locked in his. I felt like I was falling, falling into the depths of his gold eyes.

I was hypnotized.

I want the girl, and you will give her to me. His command rang out inside my head, willing me to succumb towards his resolve. I felt my stance relax and I looked towards Bella. Her green eyes stared back at me, wrung with panic and tinged with despair.

Edward…What are you doing? Her ‘voice’ rang out inside my head, and the spell was temporarily broken. But soon enough, I was trapped again, and I reached out with one hand towards Bella, locking her in my grip.

Stop! Edward, what are you doing? Her voice came, more panicked this time, and my hold loosened. She took this opportunity to wrench out of my grip, her eyes flashing with recognition and horror. She stepped back slowly, eying me warily. And then she caught sight of something behind me and her eyes flashed wide with panic.

It was then that I noticed that everyone else had been hypnotized, too. Carlisle and everyone else stood back behind Thomas, motionless—their eyes staring blankly ahead like a sleepwalkers.

Bella instantly stiffened, and then was gone. It took me a moment to realize that she had turned invisible.

Get her!! Thomas’ commanded, and I flailed my arms out, hoping to hit flesh.

Edward, please don’t do this! Don’t listen to him! Bella’s panicked voice released some of Thomas’ hold, but not enough to break it.

“Edward!” A voice called from far away, and it took me a second to realized it was Bella, this time not in my head. “I love you…” She called. And then her voice drifted into the distance, signaling that she was gone.

(Bella’s point of view)

Edward’s dead eyes stared back at me as he turned around. What was wrong with him? His eyes were a light gold, since we had hunted earlier, but they were empty, shallow.

He was hypnotized.

I glanced at Thomas’ smiling face, my sub-conscience not allowing me to make eye contact. I could feel the defeat radiating off Edward as he reached toward me.

Edward…what are you doing? I called out, projecting this towards him. He stopped momentarily, his eyes lighting with despair, but then the nothingness over took him and he wrapped his cold hand around my wrist.

Stop! Edward, what are you doing?? I sent this more urgently, and his hold loosened slightly. I broke away, stepping backwards hesitantly. I caught sight of Carlisle, Esme, Alice, Emmett, Rosalie, and Jasper, all in Edward’s same state, back behind Thomas. I needed to get out of here.

I am invisible, you can’t see me.

Edward looked startled momentarily, then determined. He began waving his arms around, attempting to hit me. Despair overtook me as I moved slowly backwards, exiting the clearing. I turned and ran, running away from Edward, from everything. I ran, shouting one last goodbye to Edward.

“Edward! I love you…” And then a sob ripped free from my chest, and I darted off into the night…
