I remember

Long ago, in the other house

A ring

Small

Smooth

With a perfect topaz

It was the most beautiful thing

I'd ever seen.

No longer.

His eyes

Gold

Deeper

Purer

Softer

Filling my thoughts

Unbidden

Incredible

Unbearable

Or they are onyx

Cruel

Angry

Rejecting

Pushing me away

But still too beautiful.

Love colors his face

in my mind.

Never

have I been so blind

His face is perfect

to me

But I don't see

his soul.
