I sat in the rocking chair in Charlie's livingroom .. a new commodity .. reading Wuthering Heights (again) as something to do. I would have been staring at Edward .. my Edward .. as something to do, but he was in the kitchen toiling over the cooking of human food .. something he hadn't done in approximately a century.
Edward had also generously gone out and bought a dozen radishes to appease my sudden craving for them. I had never even seen radishes before, so I was just as surprised as he was when I asked for them.
"Although, I'm not too surprised," he had said. "It's normal for women who are with child to want something to eat that they usually wouldn't consider real food."
" 'Women with child' ? Why don't you go right out and say it?" I had asked. "I'm pregnant."
He crinkled his nose. "It's too...crude."
I had rolled my eyes as he left in a blur to fetch me my radishes.
I set the book down in my lap, keeping my place with my thumb, and reached up with my other hand to rub the smooth, round structure that was my tummy.
"Edward!" I gasped. He was at my side in an instant.
"What is it?" he asked, worry creasing his brow.
"It kicked!" I said happily. Realization quickly registered in his eyes, and slowly, he bent down and placed his ear to my bulging stomach. I took his hand and placed it there, too.
"Mmmm..." He sighed and closed his eyes. And there it was again! A slight thump against my insides. We smiled in unison. I bent down and kissed the top of his head.
He removed his head from my belly and tilted it upwards so that our lips could meet. With his lips still pressed to mine he rose slowly to my height and gently placed his cold hand to my neck. He leaned into me, forcing me back in my seat.
My mouth curved into a wide smile beneath his lips and so did his.
"I love you," he murmured against my cheek.
"Hmm," I said.
He began to kiss playfully down my neck till I laughed from the tickling sensation he left there.
"Okay, okay!" I cried out in defeat. I set my head back against the chair and looked into his eyes. They were a liquid, amber - yellow. "I love you, too," I replied breathlessly.
His eyes smoldered playfully. I remembered that I needed to breath and focused on exhaling. Dang it! Was I never going to get used to his devastating beauty? I exhaled shakily.
"Good!" he smiled, and pecked me on the lips. Then he placed his hands on either side of my belly and said to it, "I love you, too." He kissed me where my belly button was located and I smiled contentedly.
And suddenly, Edward jerked upright. His eyes were distant as if he were seeing something beyond the confining walls of the living room.
"What is it?" I asked tentatively. The change in the atmosphere was almost tangible. He didn't reply immediately. I was about to ask him again when he said,
"What is she thinking?" I inquired quickly. To any one else this would have been an impossible question. Through his eyes I could see him probing. He became frustrated.
"I don't know."
I could feel the increduality on my face.
"You don't know?" My mouth was opened slightly in shock. He seemed to guess what I was thinking and made speedy amends.
"What I ment was, 'It's hard to tell' ."
I stared at him blankly.
"She's too distracted to think straight. I'm guessing it took her best effort to utter my name in her mind," Edward explained further. He shot to the door and opened it just in time for Alice to streak through to the living room. In a moment, he was by her side.
"What is it?" he asked urgently. Alice turned slowly to face him.
I was waiting for her to say something, but realized my ears listened fruitlessly.
Edward listened intently to her thoughts. And the more he listened, the darker his mood grew to be.
"How long," he asked, bluntly.
Alice looked at him helplessly and shook her head.
Edward sat down on the sofa, consternation evident in the contours of his lovely face.
He closed his eyes and pressed his fingers to his temples. Alice looked up at me. Her eyes were pained.
"Edward," I repeated. "Tell me what's wrong."
With a little effort, I rose from my chair and went to sit next to him on the couch.
"Edward," I commanded. His eyes flew open,
"Bella." And he lifted my face to his.
This kiss frightened me. There was too much tension, too strong an edge to the way his lips crushed mine -- like he was afraid we had only so much time left to us.
When he broke away he still held my face in his hands.
"Edward, please..." I begged him. "Tell me."
His features were shot with agony.
"The Volturi," he said. "They're coming."
