The fire subsided as I opened my eyes. It was as if awakening from a deep slumber, but of course I couldn't sleep anymore.
"Bella?" came the anxious voice of my love.
I sat up and slid gracefully over to the bathroom. I was amazed at the smoothness of which I walked. Glided, more like.
I glanced at the mirror and gasped. I looked... there was no other word for it. Inhumanly beautiful. Like the rest of the Cullens. For once, I felt as if I could belong next to Edward.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. Speak of the devil- I looked up to find Edward's captivating topaz eyes staring into mine. My deep red eyes. My brow furrowed; it was frightening me to look like a... monster. The Cullens didn't look as monstrous as me with their calm, golden eyes compared to my fiery red.
"How do you feel?" Edward asked tentatively. I smiled reassuringly, wrapping my arms around his waist. I was surprised at my strength- Edward's breath whooshed like he had the wind knocked out of him. I grinned even bigger.
"Wonderful." My first words in my new life. And they did sound... wonderful. Not velvet, like Edward's, but more like silk. Close enough, anyway.
"Edward..." I continued, inspired by my new strength. "I want to talk to Emmett."
He was surprised, having no idea where this was going.
"Remember you told me how strong I'd be?" He nodded, still confused. "Well... you'll see."
His eyes widened, but he didn't say anything else. He just stroked my hair.
"Do you think I have an... ability of some sort, like you and Alice? And Jasper?"
He pursed his lips. "Maybe... we'll find out though. Carlisle will help you, don't worry. Now, we were going to find Emmett, right?"
We headed back to the living room (at vampire speed now, of course) and I let go of Edward to stand in front of Emmett. He was sitting on the sofa next to Rosalie, and looked surprised at my advance. I grinned, showing no emotion on my face.
"Emmett? Can I ask you a favor?" Emmett raised an eyebrow in response.
I tried to make this dramatic. I lifted my arm and pointed my finger at him. "I challenge you an arm wrestling contest!"
Edward burst out laughing, as did the rest of the family. All except me and Emmett.
"Oh, this is going to be fun to watch!" Alice mused. She'd know of course.
This was going to be good. Emmett stood up, considering. He of course knew how strong a newborn vampire could be. His pride and dignity would be damaged, which was what I was aiming for. This would be payback for all those jabs he made at me when I was human. Emmett came to a decision. He was too determined.
"I accept. Prepare to be defeated!" I held in my laughter. That sounded like something a Power Ranger would say.
Jasper cleared the table, throwing the things across the room and causing them to clatter on the piano. He earned a glare from Edward and several protests from Esme.
"Be careful!" she scolded Jasper. "And you two-" she gestured towards me and Emmett- "you better be careful with that table, I just had it imported from Persia!" Emmett rolled his eyes behind her back.
"Actually, I bought it on E-bay. But yeah, it's from Persia," corrected Alice. Esme muttered under her breath.
We sat across from each other. I took a deep breath- not that I needed to breathe anymore, but this was important and the breathing calmed me.
I set my elbow on the table and Emmett faced me, his arm in the same position. He had a goofy grin on his face. Just a little too confident. We grasped hands as Edward sat as the referee.
"Ready... and, GO!" he called, smirking.
I concentrated hard- they'd never let me live this down if I, a newborn, was beaten by Emmett (no matter how strong he was). Determination was everything, I concentrated as hard as I could on Emmett. I had to beat him, but I made a note to myself to be careful with Esme's table. I still went easy on him, but it wasn't needed- Emmett started giggling uncontrollably. He hugged his stomach, cracking up. I pushed his hand down. His laughter didn't stop. I raised an eyebrow and snorted, hiding my shock. Why the heck was he laughing? "Were you even trying?"
He frowned, but the effect was ruined since giggles were still escaping his lips. Edward had a proud look on his face, but also a look of amusement and confusion. I smiled innocently, but still puzzled by his laughter. "A rematch, perhaps?" He hesitated as the chortling ceased. Edward coughed, hiding a chuckle.
"He has something he needs to get, first," he explained. Emmett slid away and re-appeared behind all of us almost instantly.
All heads whipped around to stare at Emmett, clad in wrestling wear. He even had the wrestling mask, all in a bright neon orange. He posed for us, his fists in front of his face and making martial arts sounds.
Any other sounds were drowned out by vampires guffawing. Ending my giggles, I sat back at the table. "We're not wrestling, we're just arm wrestling." He grunted in response.
"It helps me concentrate," he pouted and grasped my hand again.
"Ready... and, go!" Edward called once more. This time, I let Emmett think he was going to win. I let him push my arm down until it was about an inch from the table, feigning strain. It was too easy. His look of confidence grew, so I decided it was time to snap the trap. Concentrating strongly on Emmett again, I attempted to slam his arm on the table but he began giggling again. I concentrated even harder, focusing on his face to try to gain a clue what was so hilarious. He stopped trying to push my arm down, the giggles making him weak. My strength became too much. His arm went right through the table. He was still laughing as I let go of him, my eyes widening at the unexplained and sudden laughter.
"Why do you keep laughing? I'm not doing anything..." I was interrupted by a gasp.
"EMMETT! BELLA! NO..." Esme gasped again. Oh yeah... we had shattered her beautiful foreign table. Oops.
"Uh... sorry Esme," I replied sheepishly. "We'll get you another one..." I trailed off as she fell to the splintered remains of her furniture. I was amazed- Esme really appreciates furniture. I stared at Emmett who was now rolling on the floor, and if he could tears would be streaming out of his eyes. He kicked his feet wildly, exposing his very fuzzy orange and pink striped socks. And... was that a stuffed duck's head attached to it? My eyes were wide.
"Emmett!" Esme yelled. He held his breath to try to contain the laughter, and ducked his head in embarrassment. He then remembered the cause of the ruined table. He turned to glare at me, unhappy with his defeat. I smiled sweetly.
"I have all the time in the world, Emmett. Advantages of being a vampire, you know," I said casually, examining my nails.
Edward cut in. "Oh, don't worry Bella. He's not planning on letting you go anytime soon," he smirked. I smiled back- this would be a hobby of mine for the rest of my existence. Now, I just had to figure out what on earth was so funny...
