5. Chapter 5: Of Vampires and Strangers

Rating 4/5   Word Count 571   Review this Chapter

I stared at Charlie in shock. Why was this happening? How on earth could Charlie be- or become- a vampire?

A shriek of agony ripped from Charlie’s lungs, seeming to come from deep within him, every fiber of his very being crying out to be relieved of the unquenchable, merciless fire that was slowly consuming his humanity.

His wish could not be granted.

Writhing on the floor, his eyes darted around the room and finally rest on me.

Charlie seemed to care less that I looked pregnant. His mind was only on the fire.

“Bells!” he croaked, coughing up the congealing blood that was gathering inside his throat. “Put… put the fire out, Bella. I can’t- I can’t…” Charlie hacked up another round of thick blood. Another scream tore at his chest.

I couldn’t listen anymore. Tears were springing to my eyes. I couldn’t bear another second, watching my father die like this.

“Hold on, Daddy!” I cried. I hadn’t called my father Daddy since I was eleven years old. I ran to the kitchen.

“No, Bella… don’t leave me!” Charlie was twitching, lying in a pool of his own blood, choking out words and biting back coughs.

Charlie was trying to hang on, but life as he knew it was slipping away. The life I wanted, to be a vampire, was unfolding before my very eyes. Would it be worth it?

Yes. I told myself firmly. Being with Edward until the end of eternity. I glanced at my father. With Charlie. Oh dear.

I pushed my selfish thoughts aside. “I won’t leave you, Dad. I promise.” I soothed.

I desperately raced into the kitchen and snatched up the phone. Dialing the Cullen’s phone number, I held the phone up to my ear, pulse throbbing.

“Cullen residence, Alice speak-”

I quickly cut her off. “Alice!” I shrieked. “Come help, quick! Bring Carlisle! Charlie-” I sobbed, unable to finish.

“We’ll be there, Bella.” Alice said calmly. “Just hold-”

Click.

The line was dead.

Suddenly, I heard a misplaced step behind me. I whirled around, only to find myself faced with a stranger. But no ordinary stranger.

This stranger had blood red eyes.

“Who are you?” I asked the stranger. Is she one of the Volturi? I wondered.

“I am Ari.” The stranger said smoothly. There was a silky edge to her voice, yet her words dripped with venom. Ari’s features were delicate, yet sharp and precise, her eyes complimented by jet-black hair and exotic red lips.

In short, she was breathtakingly beautiful, not unlike the rest of her kind.

“And you are Bella.” She said, her voice sickly sweet. “How nice of you to… drop by.” Her perfect face twisted into a malicious grin.

“Why did you bite my father?” I asked bluntly, ignoring pleasantries. “What do the Volturi want?”

Ari laughed, mirth dancing in circles around her musical voice.

“Bella, Bella, Bella.” She said. “My dear, your human brain cannot comprehend the current situation, can it? I am not of the pathetic group of vampires you call your rulers. The Volturi,” she spat the word. “Have no clue as to my existence. My purpose shall soon become clear.”

Ari’s eyes seemed to pierce through my very soul, much like how Carlisle had stared at me earlier.

Another of Charlie’s screams burst through the near silence.

Ari cackled. Then, all of the sudden, she was gone. Her evil laugh mingled with Charlie’s screams, and together, they resounded through the house.

Then the door flew open.
