I sat there in the silence. Why was this happening? Why did Edward leave? Why couldn't Jacob accept my friends? I was crying. Alice would be back soon and I knew I should stop but I didn't care anymore.
I gasped. I remembered hearing Jacob leave but I hadn't been paying enough attention to realize he had come back in.
"Oh Bella. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have interrogated you like that. They're your friends and I'll always be your friend if you want me to."
"Of course I want you to be my friend. Thanks Jake."
"Anytime," he whispered and grabbed my face with his scorching hands. Oh no, I thought. This wasn't good. I loved Jacob but not like this. "Jacob," I whispered uneasily. The phone rang and I sighed with relief. I pulled out of Jacob's grasp and reached for the phone. "Hello?" No answer. "Is anyone there?"
I grasped the phone so hard, my knuckles turned white. No way. There was no way I heard that beautiful angelic voice. "E-Edward?" It still hurt to say his name. At first, I thought I was dreaming but when I turned around to look at Jacob I knew it wasn't a dream. His hands were shaking violently. I delicately put my hands in his and looked at him with apologetic eyes. He tried to smile and I noticed his hands had stopped shaking as much.
"Bella? Are you still there?"
"Yes, I'm right here. Where have you been? Alice told me that when they left, you left them and you hadn't visited in quite a while. They're worried about you."
"Alice is there?"
"She was here. She'll be back later. Umm... Jacob Black is here so she had to leave." I heard a growl on the other end of the line.
"I shouldn't have called. This is wrong but I-I couldn't resist the temptation."
Now I was freaking out. I had to keep listening to his voice. He couldn't hang up on me now. Not when I hadn't heard from him in so long. "Edward," I whispered frantically, "please come home." I turned around but Jacob was already out the door. His hands were dreadfully shaking. I was crying again. I knew he was trying to protect me from the evil of his anger but it still hurt. "Just come home," I whispered again.
"Alright Bella, I'm on my way. We need to talk"
And then he was gone. I went to the door but Jacob was no where in sight. I moaned.
"You'll see him again soon Bella, I promise. He cares about you," Alice whispered in my ear.
"I know but it still hurts"
"Well, at least you have something to keep Jacob off your mind," she grinned. "Edward's coming home. Isn't it wonderful?"
"Yes," I sighed. "It's wonderful"
"We should get ready. Your house is a mess and when is the last time you've been shopping?"
"Oh Alice," I sighed. Here we go again I thought. I'm going to be Alice's Barbie doll for the next few days again. She laughed, grabbed her keys and I wrote Charlie a letter explaining I'd be back soon and that Alice and I were going shopping.
"Ready?" she asked.
"Alright, let's go."
