Stay With Me

I could hardly keep my eyes open. For the past three days Alice had been taking me to store after store, trying on this and looking at that. It was dreadful. She decided it would be easier if I stayed at her house for a “slumber party” so I could be her guinea pig. After day one of walking to practically every store in town, I was exhausted. We got inside the Cullen’s vacant house and I went straight to the nearest couch and laid down.

“Tired already? I thought maybe you could try some of these on and see which one you want to wear when Edward’s back. Oh, and don’t forget Carlisle and the others will be here tomorrow.”

“I’ll decide in the morning Alice,” I mumbled. I could hardly speak, the last thing I wanted to do was put on clothes again. “Just let me get some sleep.”

“Alright,” she complained. Then she left but was back quicker than possible with a pillow and a blanket.

“I thought you didn’t sleep.”

“We don’t but when you started spending the night, we decided to have something comfortable for you.” Before she could finish the sentence, I was already asleep.

I woke up to a soundless buzzing coming from the dining room. I was clueless as to what was going on so I looked in the mirror, got changed and brushed my hair as best I could.

I expected to see Alice on the phone but instead I saw the Cullen family. All except for one. They were all excitingly talking, faster than I could understand but when I opened the door they all turned around in surprise. Esme was the first to rise. She ran up to me and hugged me tighter than necessary and kissed me on the forehead. Alice was practically glowing from inside out. As soon as I was released from Esme's grasp I was quickly placed into the hug of another. I looked up to see it was Carlisle. The hugs were passed out next by Jasper though he was very hesitant, then came Emmett, with his huge bear hug. I thought that was it for hugs and I turned around but then I was surprised when two beautiful stone hands grabbed my shoulders and turned me around. It was Rosalie. She looked at me for a second, not sure if I would be angry with her, and then she hugged me.

"It's good to see you again." She released me and then smiled. I smiled back but I was in shock. I never thought Rosalie would speak to me.

“Thanks Rosalie,” I whispered back. I was so relieved that no one held a grudge on me for all of this.

“So what have you two lovely ladies been up to in our absence?” Carlisle asked.

“Well, it seems I’m being Alice’s guinea pig again. She's dressing me like I’m her doll so I’m wearing something decent when he comes home. Everyone laughed and Alice blushed.

“I want this to be special Bella. You know that.”

“I know Alice. Thank you. So, when is he coming back?”

“Tomorrow, hopefully, if there’s no bad weather.” Emmett replied. He winked at me. It was amazing how I had seen vampires my whole time here at Forks but somehow, their presence still stunned me. Alice’s amazing grace, Rosalie’s intoxicating beauty, Jasper’s sense of calmness, Emmett’s strength, Esme’s love for her family. I didn’t think I would ever get over that.

I spent the rest of the day listening to where the Cullen’s had been. It was quite interesting to listen to them talk, their mouths moving so fast, you could barely understand them, but somehow, I managed. I tried to sit still but the thought that Edward would be back in less than twenty-four hours excited me. Alice seemed to notice and said, “So Bella, is there anything you want to do? You know, maybe something to get your mind off of tomorrow?”

“No thanks Alice. There’s only one thing I have on my mind right now,” I sighed. Alice grinned, “Alright then, have it your way. I’ll be back in a few hours.”

“Where are you going?”

“Hunting.” I had noticed Alice’s eyes looked darker than everyone else’s today. Maybe it was best she hunt before Edward got here.

“Bye Alice. I’ll stay here and behave.” We both laughed. Than she was gone. I listened to the quiet for a little while but then I got too restless and went to find someone to talk to. I walked up the stairs when I saw Carlisle at the door of his office as if waiting for me. “I heard your footsteps,” he replied, as if he had heard my confused thoughts. My face had probably given away my shock but I just shrugged my shoulders.

“Well, I got tired of the silence,” I finally replied.

“Of course you did, your only human Bella,” he chuckled. “Why don’t you come have a seat in my office? I’ve been meaning to talk to you.” I walked inside and sat at the bench against the wall. He pulled up a chair from his desk so that he was sitting not a foot across from me. We sat in silence for a minute before Carlisle finally spoke.

“What happened between you and Edward? Why did he leave?” My stomach turned. This was definitely the last thing I wanted to talk about and this was the last person I wanted to talk about it with.

“H-He said he didn’t love me and that he was leaving. He said he would leave and it would be as if he had never existed. He took all remembrances of him that I had and left me with only his last words.” Carlisle stared straight ahead, not showing a single emotion. He seemed to be thinking though, thinking hard. We had another awkward silence when he startled me from my dreaming.

“And did you believe him? Did you really think he didn’t love you?”

“At first I only thought, he left. Then I started to realize that this was really happening, that it wasn’t a dream. Edward had really said he didn’t love me and he didn’t care. What other choice did I have than to believe him?”

“But you know Edward loves you more than anything, anything, I’m sorry Bella. He made a huge mistake in doing this and I pray that he apologizes and that you forgive him.”

“I forgave Edward as soon as he left Carlisle,” I whispered. I looked in the mirror to see my tear-stained face. I quickly wiped the tears away unsuccessfully.

“Well I’m glad we talked Bella. I know this isn’t exactly your favorite subject so I’m not going to question any further.”

“Thank you,” I sighed with relief. “I think I’m going to see what Esme is doing then.” I stood up and walked to the door. “Carlisle?”

“Yes Bella?”

“Thanks for talking to me. It feels better to be able to tell someone what happened. I don’t like to keep secrets you know.” He grinned.

“Yes Bella, I know and thank you for telling me.” I smiled and walked out the door and down the stairs. I didn’t look for Esme. It was late and I was tired so I went to the couch and fell asleep.
