Bella Swan's POV

"Aro. Jane. I don't think you've met Emmet, Jasper, and Rosalie," Carlisle said, sarcastic yet cordial.

"There's no need. I've seen them in Alice's thoughts. Don't you remember Alice?" Aro said, his voice light. Alice snarled.

"We have no need for Bella at the moment, human or vampire. She may go. There are matters we need to discuss," Jane sang.

I turned to Charlie, who was getting very pale. "Dad, we're going to LaPush," I said, naming the first place that came to mind. Jacob would still be there, or so I hoped. Charlie slowly walked forward, but followed me to my truck. The last thing I saw was Edward's malignant face as he turned to face Jane.

Jacob Black's POV

I ran and ran, with each step pushing me farther away from Bella, and from whom I thought I was. Jacob, stop now! I heard in my head. It was Sam. What? I snarled. The vampire girl is at your house. Looks upset. Phase back once you get close. Something's going on. I sighed and sprinted back, unfeeling. Bella. The one person I could not live without. And I hated her for that. But I loved her. I would not force myself upon her, but I wanted her to stay away. It would just make me hurt more.

I phased back and saw her. She looked so small and scared, so perpetually terrified, that I ran out of the trees and hugged her. Then she started to cry. The tears were cold, and felt strange against my bare chest. I remember that the last thing she had said to me was that she loved me.

But it hadn't been enough. She loved that bloodsucker.

"Oh, Jake," she said softly.

"Bella, it's alright. Shh," I said, wishing she could stay forever. She finally quieted down. "What happened?"

She gulped. "The Volturi came back. Aro and Jane. I'm supposed to have changed by now. We had just told Charlie about the whole thing when they showed up."I leaned down and kissed her forehead. She reeked, but I didn't care. Bella had come back. In my mind, I knew it would hurt so much more when she left forever, but I wanted this moment SO bad!

"Jacob, can you promise me something?" she asked forlornly."Anything," I replied."Meet other people. Don't leave. Imprint. Be happy. I can't stand to hurt you like this," she said, looking tearful again.

"Bella, I will never imprint. I can't. I only see you. To tell you the truth, I wish I imprinted on you. There won't be another Bella," I whispered. This was not good. I wasn't supposed to have to go through with this. It hurt too much.

Bella Swan's POV

Watching Jacob tremble in front of me was horrific. I didn't want to do this to him. After all, I didn't know how long I would be staying here. How long it would take for the Volturi to compromise. I was afraid even when I was safe.

"Jake, let's just have fun. I don't know how long I can be here," I said, desperate not to hurt him. "But shouldn't you tell the pack the Volturi are here?"

"Oh! You had me so distracted!" Jake snapped out of his trembling stance. "Yeah. Can you be safe inside for a few minutes?" He truly looked concerned.

"Yeah," I said.

"Alright. I swear I'll only be gone two minutes," he assured me.

I bit my lip. "I think I can handle that."He nodded and ran into the woods. I slowly walked to the house, biding my time.

"Hello Bella," Billy said warmly as I walked in.

"Hi Billy," I said, trying unsuccessfully to keep my voice natural.I wondered if Billy knew that Charlie knew. And if he had told him about the Quileutes. What they were.

"Charlie, can you get my sweatshirt out of the car?" I asked, not taking my eyes off Billy.

"Sure Bells," he said, and walked outside to get it.

"Did you tell him?" I asked quickly.

"No. But I'm surprised you didn't," he said.I grimaced.

"If anyone should tell him, it should be you. But you don't have to," I added. He nodded.

Charlie appeared behind me, carrying my sweatshirt.

And then Jacob was back. Without a word, I followed him outside."I told Sam. He wants us to meet him at Emily's. You can say hi to the rest of the pack," Jacob said.

"Yeah, fun," I said. It would be nice to see Emily, and maybe I could get to know Kim a little better.I followed Jacob into the Rabbit, and we drove in silence. That was enough. I just liked being with him.

Edward Cullen's POV

The only thing I could think of as I made Jane and Aro sit down is what Bella was doing. Was she being attacked? Was she kissing him?

I glanced at Alice. Give it a rest Edward, you know her future's disappeared. Let's just be glad she's not here now.I grimaced.

" So, young Bella Swan is still human? When were you planning on changing her?" Aro asked casually.

"Soon. A matter of weeks. Preparations were needed," Carlisle said. Don't say anything about Charlie, Carlisle warned me. As if I didn't know.

"I'm going to have to ask you to change her today, or Jane will have to intervene," Aro said, feigning regret.

"I'm not sure we can-" Carlisle began, but was cut off.

"Would you like me to do it myself, Carlisle? I might get carried away," Aro crooned.

I snarled, and Carlisle placed a hand on my shoulder."We will," was all he said, and Jane and Aro were gone in a flash.

"You're giving up?" I yelled," I still want to give her a little more time!"

"Do you honestly want to start a war amongst our kind? Besides, Bella's been ready for weeks, months really. She chose it. It's time," Carlisle said," Go pick her up."

Bella Swan's POV

I sighed as Jacob drove Charlie and me to the border. Edward had called; the Volturi were gone. I was so relieved, but was all the more hesitant to leave Jacob. The whole ride to the border, Jacob held my hand, and I let him. This would kill me to leave him again.

When we finally got there, Edward hadn't arrived yet. This was bad. More time to say goodbye.

"Bella, are you sure about this?" he asked, eyes pained.

I nodded."Love you Jake."

"Then why isn't that good enough?" he groaned.

"It will never be good enough. I'm sorry," I whispered.

He pulled me into a tight hug, and I held on tight, not caring how tight he was hugging me. I felt him breathe on my hair a couple times. "Hope Cullen gives you hell for that," he whispered. I didn't realize I was crying till Edward pulled up.

"Love you Jake," I choked.

"Love you more," he murmured.

"Jacob, let her go," Edward's perfect voice said.He gently pried me from Jake's body. I sobbed as he led me to his car.

"Bella, are you sure?" He asked. I groaned as I heard that question asked again.

"Just drive," I croaked. Why wasn't he fighting for me? He didn't have a single snide comment for Jacob. I didn't look back as we drove away, unaware of Charlie frozen in the backseat.

"I suppose you're wondering what happened?" he asked. I nodded, unfeeling. He hesitated. "We had to compromise. We have to change you. Today. And it's going to be me who does it."
