"Bells, I don't understand any of this road trip talk. Why would you want to go on a road trip to Alaska of all places, anyway? I'm sorry Bella, but I just don't think this is safe for you…" Charlie shook his head while resuming his feast on the lasagna I made for him. Kissing up with a good dinner seemed like a golden idea for me.

"Dad, please. I'm an adult, remember?" I leaned over and patted his hand, which, I've got to say is one of the most affectionate things I could've done for Charlie. "I…I don't know how to explain, but I need this."

"Why?" He seemed genuinely puzzled that I was asking for permission to go on a road trip to Alaska.

"Well… I just haven't been the same since…he left me," I said, careful to avoid the name and watching as Charlie put down his fork and stared at me with concern. "And I don't like this thing I've become. I really miss what I used to be before any of this mess, and I feel like for the past few months, I haven't even been human, much less the old Bella Swan. I need some alone time, some time to think on the road… please, Dad. All I'm asking for is two weeks, during spring break that's coming up in less than a month."

"But why Alaska? You could go down to Jacksonville, to visit your mother, or maybe to some college visits or something… what's up there in the freezing cold of Alaska?"

"Something I've been looking for…" I whispered. "Um, I'm going to check out Alaska University too when I get there… maybe it'll be good for me."

"Bella… why don't you go with one of your friends?"

"I am!" I exclaimed. "I'm going with MnM, and he's all I need!"

"I'm talking about a real friend! Angela, or Mike Newton? One of them?" He asked. I was surprised he even remembered their names.

"Dad, I just said 'I need some alone time'. How am I supposed to have alone time when I'm not alone?" I laughed slightly, trying to ease the conversation to a less straining height for Charlie.

He stared at me and sighed.

"What about Jacob?" He asked suddenly.

"Jacob?" I was confused for a second. "Oh, Jacob Black?"

"Yeah. Why don't you take him, that way, whenever your truck breaks down---which I'm sure it will some day---then you can have a mechanic around you. Plus, he's growing up to be a pretty strong kid, and you'd be safer with him."

"Dad… I don't really know Jacob all that well," I related. Although, now that he mentioned it, I remembered that he and I did hit it off as really good friends a couple months ago. He was the one to tell me their secret.

"Well, at least think about it," Charlie said.

"Ok, but does that mean I can go?"

"If Jake won't come with you, then you'll have to let me buy you a cell phone. So I can keep in contact with you," he sighed.

"Yes!" I grinned, probably the biggest smile to hit my face since my birthday. Charlie seemed shocked at my emotion.

"I knew that cat would help you some how," he smiled back at me.

"You don't even know the beginning of it, Dad."

"Ok, no big deal right? Just a friendly talk…" I sighed, getting into the truck and putting MnM in his rightful place--the passenger seat, of course.

It had been less than a week since I got permission from Charlie to go to Alaska, but I didn't know how I was possibly going to ask Jake to come with me to Alaska. It's not exactly the most frequent question you get.

"MnM?" I looked over at him, and he was all jumpy, trying to scratch at the seats and the door without claws. "What's wrong? Are you ok?"

That was when he started hissing. He actually looked at me and hissed.

"Why are you hissing at me like that? What's the matter? We're just going to La Push…"

I shrugged it off, thinking it was some weird cat phase or something. I ignored the gaping empty hole in the middle of the dashboard and started the car, getting onto the road.

There was less than 2 weeks to spring break, and I was so ready to get out right now. It was hard to go to school these days…

Now that I was no longer a numb little zombie, I actually realized how much I missed out on my 'friends' at school. Lauren's hair was at a close shave to her hair (not that it mattered since she still treated me like a pillow that was holding the place of someone), and Angela and Ben were going completely steady now. Jessica was kind of ignoring me for the freak out on Friday night, and Mike seemed all the ready to start asking me out again.

"MnM! I'm trying to drive here," I exclaimed, pushing him off of me as he pawed into my lap. I took the exit for La Push and drove to the house that Charlie had given me directions to a couple days ago.

I pulled the still--hissing cat out of the car and shut off the engine, looking out to the beautiful beach before going up to the door. I knocked on the wood door and waited on the porch.

"Kitty, would you please relax?" I petted MnM behind his ears, but he just wouldn't clam down. I didn't understand what was wrong with it. Was he trying to tell me something was wrong?

"Bella?" A deep voice came from behind me. I turned around and saw Jake standing there, grease all over the front of his shirt.

"Jake?" I asked, amazed as he came closer to me. Wow, a lot had changed since the last time I'd seen him.
